February is Heart Health Month! According to the CDC, children and teens should engage in a minimum of 60-minutes of physical activity each day for optimal health. We asked Ms. Pitts, RCES to share an idea to keep students active and healthy at home. .
When it comes to trying to encourage your kids to be active, sometimes you need to speak their language. For instance, most kids play Fortnite or some other type of video game. A match/game in Fortnite typically takes 20 to 30 minutes to play. Tell your child to skip one Fortnite match and exercise for the 20-30 minutes. Once they understand that 20-30 minutes really isn't that long, they should be more motivated to move their bodies. It is also important to make exercise fun for everyone involved.
Some examples of fun exercises/activities for kids to do at home
Walk the dog (or any animal)
Family hikes/walks
Dance Party
Yoga
Tag games with family and friends
Riding bikes and scooters
Relay Races
Create an obstacle course
Still having a hard time convincing your child to exercise instead playing video games? You can create a workout routine that they can do that involves their favorite game. For example, if your child plays Fortnite have them do a "Drop Zone Warm Up", "Boot Camp Battle", or a "Victory Cool Down".
"Drop Zone Warm Up" exercises (to be done while you are waiting for the game to begin):
1.10 jumping jacks
2.10 squats
3.10 push ups
4. 10 situps
5. Repeat if the game has not started yet
"Boot Camp Battle" (done during the game)
1.Fortnite dance moves to celebrate
2.Bunny hops
3. 20 second Wall sits (or pretend to sit in chair)
4.Jog in place
"Cool Down Victory" (done when the game is over)
1.Hamstring stretch
2.Quad Stretch
3.Standing lunge
4. Shoulder stretches
Valentines Day is a fun holiday to show our loved ones that we care about them! It's often associated with candy and treats. From candy hearts to chocolates, moderation is key. However, if you are looking for a few healthier options for the home or classroom, here are a few ideas.
Create a platter of heart-shaped fruit. All you need is a small cookie cutter. Strawberries, pineapple, watermelon, and cantaloupe work well. You can even add in some cheese. Check out the sample platter pictured above.
Yogurt covered raisins are a tasty snack that is a healthier alternative to traditional candy bars. When compared to a Hersey Milk Chocolate Bar (1.55 oz), an individual pack of Sun Maid Vanilla Yogurt Covered Raisins has 90 fewer calories, 8.5 g less fat, 10 mg less cholesterol, 15 mg less sodium, 6 g less carbohydrates, and 7 fewer grams of sugar. Pair it with a heart-shaped strawberry, shown above, and you have a healthier and cute treat. If you are sending in a treat for the classroom, the individual serving-size boxes make it super easy to transport and distribute.
Other ideas include strawberry yogurt dipped pretzels, strawberry applesauce, and dried cranberries.
Virginia Kindness Week starts on February 10th. This week promotes small acts of kindness and how it encourages a kinder, safer, healthier, and more inclusive environment to learn. While kindness is an attribute that should be shared year round, this week offers a fantastic time to spotlight the importance of being kind to others.
On the first day of Kindness Spirit Week, students word their pajamas in celebration of "We Dream of Kindness Day."
Check out the daily themes below.
Monday- PJ DAY- We dream of kindness!
Tuesday- TIE DYE- Peace, Love, and Kindness!
Wednesday- RED DAY- Get inspiRED to show kindness.
Thursday- TWIN DAY- Double the kindness!
Friday- SHINY DAY- Make your kindness shine, wear neo, glittery or sparkly clothing.
The RCES Peer Mentors created and hung a large banner (pictured above) in the school cafeteria. Students have the opportunity to be the I in KIND! This is just one of the ways to promote kindness in our schools.
At RCHS, students will have the opportunity to add a positive, uplifting message to the You Uplift Kindness eWall. Check out the themes below for February 10th- 14th.
- Monday: Send a positive message to a friend at school who has encouraged you or been there for you when you needed them.
- Tuesday: Send a positive message to a teacher who has helped you or inspired you to meet your goals.
- Wednesday: Send a message to someone at school who brightens your day.
- Thursday: Send a positive message to school support staff (Coaches, Cafeteria Workers, Office Staff, Bus drivers, Counselors, Custodians, etc.)
- Friday: Send a positive "Shout Out" to our RCHS school community!
Families are welcome to join in the fun by sharing positive notes to the e-wall as well. CLICK HERE to view current messages and submit your own!
This month's spotlight features our Fit Kids Clinic. Funded by the PATH Foundation, this clinic connects RCPS students and staff to Valley Health providers using tele-health technology. We asked Ms. Tara Prince, LPN, a few questions to provide our families with greater insight on this school-based health clinic.
Q: In your own words, can you share a typical experience when a student visits the clinic for the first time?
A: With parental consent and completed paperwork on file, students will come to the Fit Kids Clinic, which is located directly across from the nurse’s office at the elementary school. In this step, I process the registration and file it to ones insurance provider, then ask them about the symptoms they are currently feeling. I take their vitals such as temperature and blood pressure using the tele-health technology. If needed, I can run test for strep, flu, or covid within the clinic. Once this is completed they are connected with a Valley Health provider who can speak to them directly through a video monitor. A parent can have a live interaction with the provider and their child during the video visit. After the doctor makes a diagnoses, any necessary prescriptions can be sent to the pharmacy of the parent’s choice.”
Q: What are the benefits of having the Fit Kids Clinic in the school?
A: “Students can be seen by a physician or nurse practitioner without having to miss much time from school. Each appointment is roughly 20-30 minutes. Afterwards, they can return to class or be picked up by their parent, if necessary. It saves the parents from having to take them to a doctor’s office or urgent care. If a prescription is needed the parent can go get it when school is over or after the visit if necessary."
Q: What is your favorite part about working in the Fit Kids Clinic?
A: "I love nursing and I’m a very caring and compassionate person who has always helped children and adults my entire career and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I love the interaction to be able to provide needed care at a faster pace to children to get them healthy."
Q: Is there anything else that you would like parents to know?
A: "The paperwork needs to be filed out prior to the visit. This can be found on the school website (or by visiting link below). A copy of the front and back of their insurance card information is needed as well. This way it will speed up the process for a student's visit."
