What is Dual Credit?
The Dual Credit Program through Northwest Vista College and St. Philip’s College allows 9th-12th grade students (who are eligible) to earn college credit while they are in high school. John Marshall High School offers a variety of courses and students will complete course selections with their respective counselors. There are requirements that must be met in order to be eligible for Dual Credit, there are a couple of requirements that must be met by the deadline.
The Benefits of Dual Credit
Increases the likelihood that a student will complete high school and continue their college education.
Decreases the cost of tuition and fees for students in completing their academic degrees
New graduates enter the workforce at an accelerated rate and begin to earn wages, benefiting themselves and making positive contributions to our economy
Students can earn credit for up to 14 college courses before graduating from high school
Increases student’s self-confidence
Access to campus resources
Tuition is waived for ISDs or discounted for non-ISD students
To be eligible for Dual Credit, students must complete the requirements by the deadline. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Dual Credit Application Process
Application Process & Deadlines
Step One: Complete the ApplyTexas application by February 24, 2025. Depending on the course the student is wanting to take, they can complete the application for Northwest Vista College OR St. Philip’s College (CULINARY ONLY) - If the ONLY Dual Credit class you plan on taking is Culinary Arts, you will only submit an application for St. Philip’s College. If you are going to take any other Dual Credit courses your application needs to go through Northwest Vista College (You will still be able to take Culinary Arts)
Step Two: Print/ pick up & complete the Dual Credit- New to Program form
(DUE: FRIDAY, 2/24/25) *Before Spring break 2025*
Students are required to submit this form designating which dual credit course(s) they wish to take in the upcoming school year. Changes may not be honored after completing & submitting this form! Students should be sure of the courses they wish to be enrolled in.
Step Three: Dual Credit Student Orientation Including Parent Consent
(DUE: FRIDAY, 3/7/25)
Students must log in to their ACES account and complete the online Dual Credit Student Orientation (DCSO) module. This can also be done through the Canvas App. Use this DCSO step by step guide to complete this step.Step Four: Register for TSI Test before February 24, 2025. Testing is waived if you qualify with PSAT scores. Please note, steps 1& 2 of the process MUST be completed prior to registering for the TSI. Payment of $14 for the TSI will be made through MySchoolBucks.com
Take TSI on your assigned test date. Last test will be March 1, 2025.
Spanish 3 Dual Credit and Culinary does NOT require completion of step 4: TSIA2 testing (Eligibility for Spanish is determined during the fall semester of Spanish 2 using the SDcafe assessment)
*Have qualifying PSAT scores (Reading 460/Math 510)? Email Mrs. Risius & ask her to upload your scores. No TSIA2 test needed.
*Have qualifying SAT scores (Reading 480/ Math 530)? YOU need to send your scores directly to Northwest Vista College from your CollegeBoard Account. Mrs. Risius cannot submit SAT scores, it is Northwest Vista College’s policy. Scores are due May 1st, 2025!
Please note: If you are currently taking any Dual Credit classes, you DO NOT need to reapply. You will automatically be rolled over for next year.

The Differences Between AP, Dual & OnRamps
Students may take the following AP/Dual Credit courses on their high school campus. These courses vary by individual campuses and may be offered concurrently as Advanced Placement and Dual Credit.

Keep in mind that you can only take a total of 14 Dual Credit Courses in High School. (Notice that many classes count as two Dual Credit Courses like AP Biology--you get credit for Biology 1406 and Biology 1407, so that would count as two courses). Also, you cannot take more than 15 hours in a given semester.
