Dear Colin Powell Academy Families,
I want to take a moment to reflect on our recent back-to-school nights for grades 2-5. It was wonderful to see so many of you in attendance, actively engaging with our staff and learning more about the exciting year ahead. One common theme in your rose and thorn notes was the importance of clear and consistent communication.
To ensure you stay informed, please remember that our weekly newsletter is released every Monday. You can find it on our school website, and it’s also emailed directly to both students and parents. Additionally, we share important updates via Facebook for those who are on social media.
If you’re not receiving our communications, I encourage you to sign up for ParentVue through PGCPS to receive alerts and updates. It’s a quick way to stay connected and informed about all things happening at Colin Powell Academy. Please ensure all contact information including home, cell, and work numbers as well as email addresses are all up to date in ParentVUE.
Looking ahead, this week we are hosting our back-to-school night for grades 6 and 7 on Wednesday, September 18 at 6pm. I invite all families to join us to meet the teachers and learn about the exciting curriculum your children will be exploring this year.

I wanted to provide an update to you on the status of the playgrounds:
- Two playgrounds (a K- 2; an ADA K-8) have been ordered and will be installed on the school property.
- There will be a pre-construction meeting with school-based staff, PGCPS Service and contractor in early October to kick-off construction activities.
- The playground equipment will ship on October 18 and will be delivered to the school the week of October 21.
- The two playgrounds will take approximately 5 - 6 weeks to complete (of course pending weather conditions)
We apologize for the delay but are committed to get the playgrounds installed as soon as possible.
PGCPS Supporting Services
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We understand that our car rider dismissal line can be lengthy. To help expedite the process, we kindly ask that all families display their car number tag clearly. Your child will be escorted to your vehicle promptly. Please note that parking along Fort Washington Road and showing your tag at the front door is not permitted.
To ensure our dismissal process runs smoothly, we need your consistent support.
For the week of September 16-20, 2024
- Car riders will be dismissed at 3:00 PM.
- Walkers will be dismissed at 3:10PM.
Parents of walkers, please meet your child at the steps alongside Fort Washington Road. If a parent is not present for PreK-2 students, we will escort your child back to the main office.
We also ask that you do not call your child and instruct them to walk off school grounds to meet you. This is a significant safety concern and disrupts our dismissal procedures.
