Dental Screenings for SPS Students
BMS Dental Clinic: January 23rd
Update: There is now digital permission slips below if your student never brought their paper one home.
Health screenings play an integral part in children’s development and well-being. Because childhood health problems can eventually develop into chronic adult conditions, screenings that students are given in school can help detect potential health problems and improve the overall health of every student.
Healthy students are better learners and routine checks ensure that they are healthy and fit so they can meet their full academic potential. School health screenings help in the early detection of health conditions. SPS collaborates with community partners to provide these screenings for grades K-8 each school year.
Student health screenings are coordinated by Springfield Public Schools (SPS) Health Services and performed each school year for grades K-8. SPS partners with the Community Health Centers of Lane County for dental services. If you would like your student to participate please fill out the electronic authorization form below.

The celebration to recognize Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his commitment to justice and non-violence will be held on Monday, January 20, 2025. The annual event, which highlight's Dr. King's social values in our community, is now in its 27th year.
The MLK march will start at 1 p.m. at the Springfield Justice Center. The march winds its way to Springfield High School where a student art reception begins at 1:30 p.m. The music and awards ceremony runs from 2 - 3:30 p.m. in the SHS auditorium.
The event is wheelchair accessible and will have Spanish interpretation.
This year's theme is "Peace = Justice. True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice." Each year Springfield students submit essays, artwork, poems, videos, or any other type of art form relating to the theme of the event.
The Springfield Alliance for Equity and Respect (SAfER) organizes the event, with co-sponsorships from various community organizations, including Springfield Public Schools.
All community members and visitors are invited and encouraged to attend this free event.
Talented and Gifted (TAG) Info
Talented and Gifted Referral Opportunity:
Spring 2025 TAG identification is right around the corner and we are beginning to take referrals for our program. The SPS Talented and Gifted program assesses through district wide tests and classroom work samples whether or not your student has the potential to perform at the 95%ile or above in the areas of Reading, Writing, Math, Science, Social Studies and/or Intellectual giftedness.
The 95%ile means that if your student was in a line of 100 students, they would know more than the first 95 students in line. These students are at the top of their class, and typically above most students at their entire grade level at school and require more advanced work to meet them at their rate and level of learning, keeping them challenged.
Teachers, families and specialists can all refer students for identification if they feel they meet the criteria. Students must be referred for screening no later than February 28, in order for TAG contacts to be able to gather data for the upcoming testing session. If you would like to refer your child, please reach out to Briggs TAG contact for information on where your child is at academically and to start the referral process.
After you refer them for screening, the teacher will share with you the questionnaires, along with our preponderance of evidence form to begin filling out for your student. At this time the teacher will begin gathering together the work samples and testing data in a TAG referral file. If your family has any more information to add to the files, please share them when you return the questionnaire. All of this data will be used to create a “preponderance” of evidence in order to determine if the student will/will not qualify for the TAG program in one or more areas.
Thank you for your support and please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher or me with any questions you may have about the identification process.
Thank you ~

Informational Tidbits
Cell Phone Policy: Students that bring cell phones and other electronics to the school will need to have them turned off and put away during the school hours from 8:15 to 3:05 every day. If students need to contact a parent, they should come down to the office to do so. Please help us to enforce this expectation so students can concentrate on their classes and school work while at school. You can view our cell phone policy HERE.
Sports: We are excited to partner with Willamalane to provide after school sports. Students who are planning on participating in our fall sports of flag football, cross country, or volleyball can now register at the Willamalane website (www.willamalane.org) under “Youth Sports”. Fall sports will start on September 20th.
