February Newsletter

Dear Union Hill Elementary Families,

Once again I want to take a moment through this newsletter to express gratitude to each of you for your unwavering support, involvement, and commitment to the success of our Union Hill School Community.

In our last Newsletter in January, I shared with you some highlights from the beginning of the year to December and then some upcoming events for January. This newsletter will address some results from January events as well as announce what’s coming for the month of February.

• Regarding Campus Improvement (CIP) Goals for academic improvement, our most recent MOY (Middle of Year) assessments indicate substantial student growth in Math across all grade levels—Reading/ Language Pre-K. Grades 3-5th will take Reading/Language Arts Feb 4.

• CIP goal for attendance is 95 % from 93.5% last year. Our first semester attendance was 93.65% for the whole school with 4th grade leading at 95.41%. So, to reach our 95% goal we will have an attendance competition beginning the next grading period Feb. 14-March 7. The grade with the highest attendance for that period will get a Pizza Party in the cafeteria to which all family members are invited—Attendance is a Family Affair and we want to celebrate you for making it possible for our students to come to school each day. We also want to assure you that we at Union Hill and the RRISD are committed to providing an environment and atmosphere where coming to Union Hill each day is a good experience for them academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. • CIP Goal for improving communication is getting better and better. Your grade level Dojo’s sent weekly by each grade level and this Monthly Newsletter (starting in December for January), as well as our website postings are examples of our efforts to keep families in the know as to what’s happening on our campus and district.

• Proud of the growth in numbers of student testing for TAG (Talented and Gifted) at Union Hill from 45 two years ago to 119 up to this week. Not certain yet how many will be identified but that many being tested or considered is just plain awesome. Thank you parents and teachers for seeing the brilliance in our students and recommending them for testing.

• January 28 was Transition Night for our 5th graders during which counselors from Hernandez and Hopewell came to share with our parents of fifth graders important information in English and Spanish as well as a resource folder to help prepare our students to successfully transition to Middle School next school year. The meeting was well attended and Ms Matthews’ class was the Pizza Party winner for having the most parents/guardians attend. Party details to come! But congratulations and gratitude now to all those families and counselors and our Parent Liaison that planned and or attended that night to make it a success!

Estimadas familias de Union Hill Elementary,

Una vez más quiero tomar un momento a través de este boletín para expresar mi gratitud a cada uno de ustedes por su apoyo inquebrantable, la participación y el compromiso con el éxito de nuestra comunidad escolar Union Hill.

En nuestro último boletín en enero, compartí con ustedes algunos aspectos destacados desde el comienzo del año hasta diciembre y luego algunos próximos eventos para enero. Este boletín abordará algunos resultados de los eventos de enero, así como anunciar lo que viene para el mes de febrero.

• Con respecto a las Metas de Mejoramiento del Campus (CIP) para el mejoramiento académico, nuestras evaluaciones MOY (Middle of Year) más recientes indican un crecimiento sustancial de los estudiantes en Matemáticas en todos los niveles de grado-Lectura/Lenguaje Pre-K. Grados 3-5 tomarán Lectura/Lenguaje el 4 de febrero.
• La meta del CIP para la asistencia es 95% de 93.5% el año pasado. Nuestra asistencia en el primer semestre fue de 93.65% para toda la escuela con el 4to grado a la cabeza con 95.41%. Así que, para alcanzar nuestra meta de 95% tendremos una competencia de asistencia comenzando el próximo periodo de calificaciones del 14 de febrero al 7 de marzo. El grado con la asistencia más alta para ese período conseguirá una Fiesta de Pizza en la cafetería a que todos miembros de familia son invitados. -Asistencia es un Asunto de Familia y queremos celebrarlo por hacer posible para nuestros estudiantes venir a la escuela cada día. También queremos asegurarles que nosotros en Union Hill y el RRISD estamos comprometidos a proveer un ambiente y atmósfera donde venir a Union Hill cada día sea una buena experiencia para ellos académica, social, emocional y físicamente. • CIP Objetivo para mejorar la comunicación es cada vez mejor. Su nivel de grado Dojo envía semanalmente por cada nivel de grado y este boletín mensual (a partir de diciembre para enero), así como nuestro sitio web publicaciones son ejemplos de nuestros esfuerzos para mantener a las familias en el saber en cuanto a lo que está sucediendo en nuestro campus y el distrito.
• Orgulloso del crecimiento en el número de estudiantes que se examinan para TAG (Talentosos y Dotados) en Union Hill de 45 hace dos años a 119 hasta esta semana. Todavía no estamos seguros de cuántos serán identificados, pero que muchos sean examinados o considerados es simplemente impresionante. Gracias a los padres y maestros por ver la brillantez en nuestros estudiantes y recomendarlos para las pruebas.
• El 28 de enero fue la Noche de Transición para nuestros estudiantes de quinto grado durante la cual los consejeros de Hernández y Hopewell vinieron a compartir con nuestros padres de estudiantes de quinto grado información importante en inglés y español, así como una carpeta de recursos para ayudar a preparar a nuestros estudiantes para una transición exitosa a la Escuela Intermedia el próximo año escolar. La reunión fue muy concurrida y la clase de la Sra. Matthews fue la ganadora de la Fiesta de Pizza por tener el mayor número de padres / tutores que asistieron. Los detalles de la fiesta están por venir. ¡Pero felicitaciones y gratitud ahora a todas esas familias y consejeros y nuestro Enlace de Padres que planearon y o asistieron esa noche para hacerla un éxito!

February Events:

• February is Black History Month. Our big Launch event was held in January ----when a popular African Storyteller presented the “African Safari” program- It was interactive and all students were able to participate in and enjoy the Program. Thanks to our PTA for sponsoring such an event. Over the upcoming days and weeks in this month there will be different opportunities for students to celebrate and learn about the contribution and presence of African Americans in the history of this country.

• Feb 3 –Fifth Graders visited their future Middle Schools (Hernandez and Hopewell)—we are so proud of their excellent comportment in their new schools!! They were being their best, doing their best, and putting forth their best efforts representing their Wolfpack way as they do on campus as well as away from campus!!

• Feb 4—Interim Reading assessments for 3-5th grades.

• Feb. 6—Watch Dog interest meeting in the Library at 3:30 p.m. See dads of great students to learn more.

• Feb 12—Board Update—Union Hill will submit for the School Board of Trustee review our: Points of Pride, Coming/Past Events, Campus Initiative – all those things we do with and for our students and community toward our continuous improvement as a campus.

• Feb. 14—Class Valentine Parties. Please see the link with the guidelines regarding class parties. Each grade level has sent or will send this information via DoJo so families will be aware. The same will be true for the end of year party on May 22. Thank you for understanding the space constraint and purpose of the class parties. See Class Party letter.

• Feb. 17—Student/Staff Holiday—Enjoy and make great memories!

• Feb. 20—Academic Progress Reports will go out for 3rd – 5th grade students.

• Feb. 26 at 3:15pm. Bond Update: In the Library a district representative will come to Union Hill to give an update to staff on our recently passed bond. They will share the progress on selling the bonds, as well as timelines for different projects approved by the bond both district projects and Union Hill projects.

• Feb 3 -Los alumnos de Quinto Grado visitaron sus futuras Escuelas Intermedias Hernandez y Hopewell)-¡¡Estamos muy orgullosos de su excelente comportamiento en sus nuevas escuelas!!! Estuvieron dando lo mejor de sí, haciendo lo mejor y esforzándose al máximo para representar a su Wolfpack tanto en el campus como fuera de él.
• Feb. 4-Evaluaciones intermedias de lectura para los grados 3-5.
• Feb. 6-Reunión de interés de Watch Dog en la Biblioteca a las 3:30 p.m. Vea a los papás de los grandes estudiantes para aprender más.
• Feb 12-Board Update-Union Hill presentará para la Junta Escolar de revisión de nuestro fideicomisario: Points of Pride, Coming/Past Events, Campus Initiative - todas aquellas cosas que hacemos con y para nuestros estudiantes y la comunidad hacia nuestra mejora continua como un campus.
• Feb. 14-Clase de Fiestas de San Valentín. Por favor, consulte el enlace con las directrices relativas a las fiestas de clase. Cada nivel de grado ha enviado o enviará esta información a través de DoJo para que las familias sean conscientes. Lo mismo ocurrirá con la fiesta de fin de curso el 22 de mayo. • ¡Feb. 17-Vacaciones de los estudiantes y el personal-Disfruten y hagan grandes recuerdos!
• Feb. 20-Los reportes de progreso académico saldrán para los estudiantes de 3ro a 5to grado.
• Feb. 26 a las 3:15pm. Actualización de Bonos: En la Biblioteca un representante del distrito vendrá a Union Hill para dar una actualización sobre nuestro bono recientemente aprobado, a todo el personal. Ellos compartirán el progreso en la venta de los bonos, así como los plazos para los diferentes proyectos aprobados por el bono de ambos proyectos del distrito y los proyectos de Union Hill.

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the WATCH DOGS program at UHE! We will have our first DOG WATCH meeting on 02/06 at 3:30 pm in the library. Pizza will be provided!
