District Attendance Update
Aug. 19, 2024
Dear Poudre School District community:
We hope you’ve had an excellent start to the new school year and have been able to join your teachers and classmates every school day so far. It’s important to make and keep good attendance habits from the very first day of school to have a successful year.
Students who attend school regularly perform better academically and are more likely to graduate from high school than students who are chronically absent (defined as missing 10% or more of school days, excused or not). Unfortunately, one in three Colorado students are chronically absent, according to the Colorado Department of Education.
PSD has a goal of 95% average daily attendance. While a goal of 100% attendance doesn’t leave space for occasional student illness, going to school 95% or more of the time helps students stay on track with their schoolwork and feel more connected with staff, peers, and activities at school, which has positive impacts on student mental health and belonging.
Absences can add up quickly and negatively impact a student’s progress. Missing just a couple days each month means a child is losing out on more than 10% of in-class learning. To help families track absences and offer support, schools will send parents and guardians a letter if their child passes the following thresholds:
Absent 10% or more of school days so far in the school year
Absent 15% or more of school days so far in a school year
Absent 25% or more of school days so far in a school year
These percentages account for both excused and unexcused absences. Unexcused absences are days missed for any reason not listed in the excused absence list in the Student Code of Conduct (page 11). Leaving school for vacations, work (outside of a work-study program under school supervision), or appointments that can take place outside of school hours/have not been pre-approved by a school administrator are examples of unexcused absences for a student.
Parents and guardians will also receive letters if their child becomes habitually truant by having four or more unexcused absences in one month or 10 or more unexcused absences in a year.
PSD staff want to be partners with families in getting students to class. Please contact your school if you have questions or need attendance support.
Sincerely,
Poudre School District
Important 6th Grade Information!
6th Grade Vikings
Hello 6th Grade Families!
What a great first (full) week of middle school!
As a 6th grade team, we wanted to share with you two big items that will help you and your student be successful!
PLANNERS: Students use their planner to help them build organizational skills. Last week, our teachers taught a lesson on how we use planners at Lesher (see the slide below for reference). We added our class schedule and color coded “Blue” and “Gold” days. Asking your student to review their planner every evening can make for a good routine and review of their day. Did you know that students can earn a cash prize for completing their planner?
COMPUTERS: Your student should have brought you a “Computer Use Agreement” for you to review and sign. This is due Monday, Aug. 26th. When your student brings home their laptop, please help your student set up an area where they can get into the routine of charging their laptops every night. It is best practice to have a spot outside of their room to charge and keep laptops so that rooms stay “electronics free”.

Crossing Guards Needed!
Hey Lesher community!
We are in need of family volunteers to serve as crossing guards in the morning (7:00-7:30) and afternoons (2:25-2:55) in the intersections of Stover/Prospect. If you're willing to volunteer your time please email our principal Don Kotnik at dkotnik@psdschools.org.
Thank you!
Laptop Acceptable Use Agreement
All students need to fill out and return the laptop Acceptable Use Agreement found below. Please review with your child, sign and return. Let us know if you have any questions!
News from the Front Office
We are piloting a new digital check-in process in the front office. If you are bringing your student in late or checking them out early for the day please download the ParentVUE app and bring in your phone with you. You will then scan them in and out at our Kiosk at the front desk. If you have any questions, please ask Mrs. Klitch or Ms. Roth.

Lesher Minecraft Tour!
Over the past 2 years, Design Club has been busy building a scale model of Lesher in Minecraft! We used Google Earth to measure an outline from above – each block was ½ meter in length. They took pictures of every classroom and made sure every single detail was accounted for – down to the color of the flooring to Mr. Swann on hall duty in the front. They used redstone (it’s a special kind of Minecraft block that is like electricity) to power lights, run water to the water fountains, and play a special tune when you press a button at the front door.
Evie Eslinger, Esther Johnson, and Emilia Mellizo Kroll have been integral as the ‘mayors’ of this online community. They have presented their work at several teacher trainings at the district level!
Last week, this video was presented to 5th graders and they loved seeing their new school!
