A positive referral is when a parent, student, community member or colleague catches (Catches = Caught-Cha -get it) a staff member (teacher, secretary, para, custodial staff, nutrition staff, etc.) making a positive impact (made your child feel respected, cared about, helped with work, made a positive phone call home, etc). The parent and/or student can then fill out a positive referral for this staff member. Positive referrals can be filled out via the link below. The goal is to recognize our staff for going above and beyond. Please help us in recognizing their hard work, compassion, and love they have for our DCMS FAMILIES.
Staff members who are caught making a positive impact will receive the Caught Cha form from any DCMS parent, student, community member or colleague. A copy of the good deed will be shared with the staff member and they will also be recognized on our social media platforms and at school. - Polos, Sweatshirts, Hoodies, Turtlenecks, Spirit/Organizational Shirts, 1/4 zip & full zip are allowed– Red, White, Gray, and Black are the only colors allowed.

Dear Families,
We are so grateful you are a part of the school community this year.
One of the aims at our school is to equip young people for all the realities of today’s world. With that in mind, we have partnered with CharacterStrong - an organization that provides training for educators and social & emotional learning curriculum for students. Their work in grades 6-12 focus on 3 main outcomes: increasing a sense of belonging for all students, improving skills that support student well-being, and deepening student engagement in their academics, in their school, and in their community.
Here’s what the data tells us:
• A sense of belonging in school is one of the most important conditions for learning and a fundamental support for social and emotional well-being. Nearly ⅓ of all students report a weak sense of belonging in their schools. Roughly half of 6th - 12th grade students say they don’t enjoy coming to school most of the time.
• Mental health challenges for teens have been increasing and 7 out of 10 teens in the U.S. (between 13 and 17 years old) have named anxiety or depression as a major problem among their peers.
• Student engagement drives learning and supports school success.
This curriculum was created to support school communities as they engage in the work of preparing young people to thrive in the 21st century. The research supports the effectiveness of social & emotional learning in schools to increase student’s academic success and college & career readiness. The lessons focus on developing skills and mindsets around building positive habits, understanding our emotions, and increasing empathy for people and communities who have lived different lives than us. The curriculum helps students think about things they want to improve in their school, their relationships, and their world and then provides tools for them to work individually and in teams to close the gaps they’ve identified.
One of the key parts of nearly every lesson is the “CharacterDare” for Middle School students and the “To Be List” for High School students. These are invitations near the end of most lessons to put the content that they are learning into action in the real world. If you ever want to play an active role in the CharacterStrong curricula, simply ask your student about the most recent CharacterDare or To Be List challenge. Maybe they’ll invite you to try one yourself!

Stuco September News
Hello Dcms, I hope everyone had a great summer! School has started and we're finally getting back to learning. I'm sure everyone has been signing a lot of syllabus papers and doing a lot of all about me papers too. Did you miss coming to school to talk to your friends because I did.
But let's get to what is going on this month at Dcms. To start off the school year we are going to have a back to school dance. There will be activities such as games, maybe even a raffle. 1st place will have a big prize won 2nd place will also get a prize but surely it won't be as rewarding. The dance will be on September 8, In the auxiliary gym. It will go from 7-9pm. Don't forget September 8th, It will take place on Friday. Let's all hope the fire alarm doesn't go off again like our last year's Final Bash dance. I hope everyone has a great and fun time there. Remember We still have the same dress code as school. This is your DCMS reporter/historian signing out.

6th Grade Olympians & Spartans
We hope by now you are settled into the routine of school. It is always hard to get back into things, but always rewarding when we do. We are so excited to be back for another year and have enjoyed getting to know our new students. It has been amazing to see them getting over the initial worries and fears of the middle school transition and see them learning, working hard and taking on more responsibility for themselves and their learning.
In the 6th grade, the advisory teachers will be checking grades for their advisory students every Friday. Our goal is to help our students become aware of their work habits and help them be responsible for their assignments.This is our missing work policy.
Advisory teachers will print out a list of any missing assignments and give it to their advisory students. If they have missing work, they need to talk to the teacher to get the assignment complete and turned in by Wednesday the following week. If they do not have missing work, they will not have to worry about this.
Once the assignment is complete and turned in, the student needs to have the teacher sign their missing work paper so the advisory teacher knows it is taken care of for the week. When they are all signed off, they will give this missing work paper to the advisory teacher.
If a student forgets to do this, or loses their missing work paper, they will have a 30 minute detention time with their advisory teachers so we can help them get caught up.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email or call the school to speak to your child’s advisory teacher.
Also a reminder, We have a school policy of NO GUM in school. We want to keep our school clean, gum free and less sticky! We would appreciate it if you didn’t allow your child to bring it to school.

7th Grade Odyessy & Voyagers
Odyssey teachers have enjoyed meeting and getting to know our new students and we’ve already engaged in many learning activities. In the month of September, 7th Grade ELA will start the year in the “Facing Adversity” unit. They will begin by reading about the Dust Bowl era and learn how those that lived through it survived and overcame obstacles in life. Seventh grade ELA teachers would also like to remind you that asking your child to read just 20 minutes a day will expose them to 1.8 million words a year.
In Mr. Varner’s science classes, students will be learning about energy and how energy can be transformed from one type of energy to another. In social studies, Miss Johnston’s students will study physical geography. This involves the examination of Earth’s physical features – landforms, bodies of water, weather, climate and natural resources. In math classes taught by Ms. Figueroa, students will be working on identifying and representing proportional relationships. Finally, in Ms. Camacho’s Connect class, students will begin the world of Xello and learn what it means to be a good digital citizen and focus on some internet safety.
