These assemblies will recognize students for their outstanding academic accomplishments and contributions to our school community. We are so proud of all their hard work and dedication!
End of Football Season: Congratulations to our football teams on a fantastic season! A special shoutout to our 8th-grade team, who have earned the honor of being City Champions! We are incredibly proud of their teamwork, dedication, and sportsmanship throughout the season. Go Mustangs!
Cultural Celebrations This Week: This week, we are embracing and celebrating three important cultural events:
Diwali: The Festival of Lights, a celebration of light over darkness and good over evil, bringing joy and prosperity to those who celebrate.
Halloween: We wish our students a fun and safe time as they enjoy the spooky festivities!
Día de los Muertos: A time to remember and honor our loved ones who have passed, with beautiful altars, traditions, and celebrations. We encourage our students to appreciate and respect the diverse cultural traditions being celebrated this week.
Orchestra: Mark your calendars for November 2nd, when our talented Orchestra will perform at the Día de los Muertos celebration. You won’t want to miss it!
Election Week Voting In social studies classes this week, students will participate in a mock election to learn about the importance of voting and the democratic process. This is a great opportunity for students to practice civic engagement and understand the value of their voice.
No School Days Please note the following important dates:
Friday, November 1st: There will be no school.
Tuesday, November 5th: There will be no school as it is Election Day, and we encourage all adults to participate in their civic duties. Don't forget to vote!

Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most important festivals in Hinduism, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.
It marks the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom of Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana, and it is celebrated with the lighting of oil lamps, decorating homes, exchanging gifts, and sharing festive meals with loved ones. Diwali is a time for renewal, hope, and joy, as it also signifies new beginnings and the victory of positive energy.
Wishing everyone who celebrates Diwali a joyous and bright festival filled with happiness, prosperity, and peace! Happy Diwali!
Halloween Costumes at School -Thurs. 10/31
Halloween is quickly approaching! While dressing up and celebrating the holiday provides opportunities for fun and community building, it can also create situations where students inadvertently wear costumes that may be hurtful to others. I ask you to join me in ensuring that students are thoughtful about their costumes. Being proactive will help us avoid uncomfortable situations and ensure Halloween is a time where all students feel safe and respected.
Please talk with your student to ensure their costume does not portray a stereotypical image of a culture or group of people. Also, help them ensure their costume is not offensive to any racial, ethnic, or religious group, people with disabilities or illnesses, or any other group. Costumes should not turn someone’s identity into a caricature. While students may choose to dress as a famous person or character whose identity differs from their own, please reinforce that darkening skin or using makeup to change skin color is inappropriate and hurtful. Students may not be aware of the long history of harm these practices have caused, and they need our guidance in understanding why it’s problematic.
Some examples of problematic costumes include Native American headdresses or feathers, dressing as a homeless person, dressing as someone with physical or mental disabilities, or any costume that portrays a narrow or negative stereotype based on ethnicity, religion, or race.
I look forward to celebrating Halloween with all the students and appreciate your support in making it a fun and inclusive day for everyone. If you have any questions regarding the day, please feel free to reach out.

Orchestra News
A tradition for 35 years, our Fall Festival is a family-friendly community event. Each year, we gather hundreds Austin ISD orchestra students from many Austin High School feeder schools, as well as other area schools for a Halloween/Dia de Los Muertos themed concert and carnival. In addition to performances by the Austin high School Orchestras, the event features performances by the orchestras from Mathews Elementary as well as Covington, O. Henry, and Small Middle Schools, plus Ann Richards, Kealing, Lamar, and Lively Middle Schools. For the students, it’s a great opportunity to showcase their work and connect with fellow orchestra students. For the families and community, it’s a fun and busy fall festival!
Carnival attractions include music, games, food and beverages, a bounce house and dunk tank, as well as a silent auction that features interesting items to bid on.
While the carnival fun continues outside from 1:30pm to 6:30pm, orchestra performances take place inside the AISD Performing Arts Center beginning at 2:30 and continue until about 8:00pm. Please see the attached schedule for details.
Theatre- Save the Date
In addition to performing at O. Henry, there will also be an additional show.

Attendance Reminders/Updates
**90% rule what does it mean?**
**90% rule what does it mean?**
If a student drops below 90% in a course, an "NC" is entered instead of a grade. The grade may be passing – but the student did not attend at least 90% of the time. Please contact your student’s Assistant Principal to see what corrective steps must be taken.
Notices are going out to families this week whose students are dropping below 90% attendance and we will be required to attend "Attendance Matters" workshop:
