Changing the SySTEM Camp
Unfortunately, due to a lack of camper registrations, we have had to cancel the fall edition of Changing the SySTEM. However, this January we will be hosting a makeup event on the 20th, from 10 AM to 12 Pm. We will be launching two types of rockets at West Linn High School. All materials will be provided, and the event is free of charge. Please fill out the sign up form to confirm your attendance. We can’t wait to see you there!
SOLVE Events
We continue to participate in SOLVE events. We will be at Carriage Way Open Space on January 11th from 9 AM - 12 PM. We usually do ivy pulling, trail chipping, or debris cleanup. It is a great opportunity to get to know the team and contribute to the community. This will be our 57th time volunteering.
BunnyBots Competition
Last month, we competed at the BunnyBots competition with the robot built by our new students, Mantis. Our new students received guidance from experienced students and mentors, training them for the 2025 FIRST Robotics Competition season, Reefscape. Mantis performed well, being chosen as the 3rd robot on Alliance 4, led by Team 2374. Other robots in our alliance were from Team 2635 and Team 4043. We placed as finalists, eventually being knocked out by the winners in a suspenseful best 2 out of 3, losing the tiebreaker.
2025 Reefscape
Over the past weekend, Team 7034 participated in a group kickoff hosted by Team 1425, alongside Team 2374 and Team 10444. We learned about our new game 2025 Reefscape and spent 2 full days planning out our goals and what we’re going to aim for this season. This game, significantly more complicated than ones in recent years (simplified following the pandemic), requires intricate mechanisms of different sorts to handle manipulation of the different game pieces.
Following our planning, team members have begun constructing different prototypes and testing out ideas while other team members have begun constructing field elements to simulate the success of our prototypes.
Continuing into the season, we will finish up prototyping and begin digitally designing our robot (CAD) through a program called Fusion 360. We will then manufacture our parts in parallel, and begin assembling as soon as possible. Following that, the remaining steps are wiring the robot, coding it, and practicing with it in preparation for our competitions.
We will be competing at the week 1 competition, at Oregon State Fairgrounds on February 28th-March 1 and at the week 2 competition, at Clackamas Academy of Industrial Sciences on March 7-8. If we are ranked within the top 45 teams within the Pacific Northwest District, we will progress to district championships and compete against some of the best. If we do well enough at the Pacific Northwest District Championships (knock on wood), we could qualify for FIRST World Championships
Team Announcements
2024-25 Sponsors
Do you work for a company or business interested in sponsoring the team? We would love your support, financial or in-kind, in this upcoming build season! We offer viewership to thousands of spectators over competitions and are a non-profit, meaning all donations are tax-deductible.
We can't build robots without our community so your help would mean the world! Please email us at wlhsfrc@gmail.com for more information.
Thanks so much to our current sponsors!
Including: Erickson Forensics, Siemens, Gene Haas, Flir, TE Connectivity, Lions' Club, Elevate Wealth Advisors, McMenamins, and The American Association of University Women!
We greatly appreciate support in any form!
GoFundMe
If you’d like to show your support to the team, you can find our GoFundMe page here!
Amazon Wishlist
Our team often needs many odd bits and bobs and it is a lot for us to purchase all of it. If you’re willing to help out, we kindly ask you to purchase anything on here.
CTS Standardization
With our past success hosting our free, all girl STEM Camp, Changing the SySTEM, we’ve decided to help other teams support girls throughout the larger region. For any teams/organizations interested in hosting their own Changing the SySTEM franchise, please contact us via our email (wlhsfrc@gmail.com). All the information can be found at our CTS camp website.
Bottle and Can Collection/Recycling
The WLHS Robotics team is holding a BottleDrop Fundraiser and we’d love your support!
Our bottle and can recycling has been tremendously successful this past year. You can drop off all of your plastic bottles and aluminum cans at the engineering lab (Room 709/715) during lab hours.
Current Projects
Battery Box
Currently, we are designing a better box for storing and charging our batteries! The new design will utilize voltmeter ammeters to effectively display our battery charge and be constructed using wood joinery. We have assembled the battery box and are currently working on figuring out the electrical wiring for it. We look forward to bringing this to our season competitions.
Sponsor Board
We are designing a new way to display our thanks for our yearly sponsors at our competitions. To do this, we are designing a magnetic board to attach to the back of the battery box to be put on display. Our new Marketing team recruit will be learning how to design this.
Robot Cart
We have some of our mechanical members working on designing a modular robot cart right now. This cart should be easily collapsible, lightweight, and sturdy. Some of the other requirements we’d like are: operating counsel placement, water bottle holding area, “Robot!” horn, and LEDs. We have scheduled a design review in the upcoming weeks and will proceed with manufacturing following that.
Rocket Box
We also have a student working on redesigning our pneumatic rocket launcher as it broke during our last Summer of STEAM Camp. They are redesigning the house and electric controls to make it both simpler and much more durable. This is a great project for learning!
Powder Coat Booth
The team is currently trying to design a better powder coating booth to maximize safety and contain the excess powder during the process.
Subteam Updates
Hardware (Design, Manufacturing, Mechanical, Electrical)
After an amazing Kickoff last Saturday the 4th, hardware has dived into brainstorming ideas and rapid prototyping mechanisms to collect coral and lift it six feet off the ground. Some ideas being worked on are a pinkarm and elevator extension system and a claw or roller based intake/outtake. We hope to have some good prototypes by Saturday the 11th so that we can begin robot CAD and system integration.
Software
Following kickoff, the software team will be working on improving their April Tag recognition system to improve the robot’s auto alignment during competition. Furthermore, the team will be experimenting with one of the old robot’s (Skorpio from 2023) arms to experiment with, as it may be similar to something the team designs this year.
