We are trying to get students to utilize the test materials the students have on the computers so the 5th grade team has developed this organizer. On the computer they can highlight in different colors on their computers. Yellow is their key words: What is the question asking for? (Explain, list, select 2, etc.) Pink is Signal Words: The words that we are looking for in the passage (certain character's, supporting details, a certain word, etc.) When they are done they are to justify their answer. This will ensure that the students are explaining why they chose their answer and if it circles back to what the question is asking for. It also helps us understand their way of thinking. Students are to do this for every passage they read to start getting used to their strategies. The students do know that strategies for their assignment is part of their grade.
