Vaccine Requirement
Your Junior student is REQUIRED to have a Meningitis Booster before the start of their Senior year. This should be turned in by the first day of school, August 7th, for the 24-25 school year.
This vaccine is Meningitis - (Menactra, MCV4, MenACWY). The best place to get the vaccine is either your pediatrician’s office or the Iredell County Health Department. You can get the vaccine anytime after your student turns 16.
Once completed, the easiest thing to do is email me (aclinard@mgsd.k12.nc.us) a copy of your vaccine record. PLEASE keep a copy for your records because after your student graduates, I no longer have access to their vaccine records. I can verify in the NC registry also.
Please do NOT wait until the end of the summer to get this vaccine.
About half of the junior students have already gotten this vaccine. You will be notified by the end of May if you still need this vaccine. Please reach out with any questions.

Registration Information
Detailed registration information was shared with students during their 2nd block class earlier this semester. Students' course selections will be shared with families next month- please be on the lookout for your student's Course Verification Form in the mail beginning April 6th. If you have questions or concerns about courses for next school year, please reach out to your assigned school counselor.

Non-Reporting Classes
Seniors who are on track to graduate and who do not wish to take a full schedule may select 'Non-Reporting' during the course selection process. Non-Reporting is only available to students who are Seniors, and students may only have one Non-Reporting block per semester. This is not encouraged for students who plan to attend a four year college after high school graduation, as universities typically prefer applicants who take advantage of all available educational opportunities.
Seniors with a Non-Reporting block must provide their own transportation to and from campus to accommodate not having a class during a specific block. Non-Reporting students must leave campus during the block for which they are not scheduled to have a class. Seniors may not stay on campus during a Non-Reporting block.
Mid-Year Graduation
Please alert your school counselor if you are interested in a mid-year graduation. There is a form that must be discussed and submitted. We do not recommend a mid-year graduation for any student interested in continuing their education after high school.
Registration Reminders
Please visit the MHS Registration website to review the Course Guide, course videos, upcoming important dates, and other registration information.
Remember, there are no schedule changes permitted once Course Verification forms are returned. If you have questions about academic planning, please email or schedule an appointment with your school counselor.
Postsecondary Planning
Senior year is all about finding your 'E'... whether you plan to Enlist in the military, seek Employment, or Enroll in a trade school, community college, or 4-year university, we are here to help you make the most of your Senior year.
If your plan is to enlist in one of the 6 branches of the military, visit Today's Military to review joining eligibility, enlistment steps, and career opportunities.
Students who plan to enter the workforce are encouraged to reach out to Mr. Kevin Wilson at krwilson@mgsd.k12.nc.us for resources and guidance. If you have not done so already, create a resume using this worksheet as a guide.
If you plan to pursue higher education, please use this College Application Handout to help you get started. We recommend students visit college campuses as they narrow down their lists. 11th graders are allowed one excused college visit day and here is the form to request them. Forms must be submitted before the student’s planned absence in order to be excused.
CCP Information
Juniors who have a CCP application on file can take classes this summer at Mitchell! See Ms. Royal in A215 before April 1 to get started. Summer registration for CCP classes opens on April 1 (we aren't in school that day), and classes are first-come-first-served.
Fall CCP class selection opens on April 29. Since classes are first-come-first-served, let's plan ahead to make April 29 smooth! CCP students can meet with Mitchell representatives in the Media Center throughout the day on April 23 to add classes to their Self Service Planner. Set reminders for April 23 and 29 if you plan to take a Fall CCP class.
Still need to submit an application to take CCP classes? Pick one up in A215!
There are two types of classes:
College Transfer Classes: Weighted on a 5.0 scale, transfer to four year public colleges in NC, and can help students earn credits for general education requirements required by colleges. Examples are General Psychology, Writing and Inquiry, Macroeconomics, Art Appreciation, and Intro to Sociology.
Career & Technical Classes: Many are weighted on a 4.0 scale. Some are weighted on a 5.0 scale. Most do not transfer to a four year college, and will instead count towards a two-year degree. Examples include: Welding, Manicuring, Culinary Arts, Accounting, Business, Electrical Systems, HVAC Repair, and Nurse Aide.
Internships and Apprenticeships
There are many opportunities for students to obtain practical, hands-on job experience before graduating high school. If you have any questions about these opportunities, please reach out to Mr. Kevin Wilson at krwilson@mgsd.k12.nc.us.
What Now??
What should students be focused on now?
- Whatever a student’s plans are, they should start early!
- Explore interests! Students should think about which pathway is best for them- continuing education, entering the workforce, enlisting in the military, or taking a gap year. If students plan to continue their education, they should be researching schools and thinking about what they’d like to study.
- Don’t let grades slip (Junior-year grades tend to have the greatest impact on the college admissions process).
- Take testing seriously! Dedicate time to earning your best test-score.
- Check your school email regularly for updates and reminders.
What should parents/guardians be focused on now?
- Encourage your student to make a meeting with their School Counselor and/or our Career Coordinator.
- Help keep your student organized and motivated.
- Assist your student in their exploration of interests and/or colleges.
- Remind students that this is a crucial period that will set them up for success down the road.
When in doubt, email your School Counselor!
