The Tiger Times
January 2025
π From the Principal π
Hello Mohawk Families!
I hope your holidays were restful and enjoyable. The beginning of a new year often inspires us to create new goals or resolutions for ourselves. It is also a great time to help your student(s) develop the habit of reviewing his/her own goals and plans. Research shows that when we set goals and receive specific feedback about our goals, we are more likely to be successful.
Throughout the school year, teachers work with students to create their own individual reading goal and a plan to help them achieve this goal. Students create a goal that is specific and measurable such as improving their FastBridge score or increasing the number of sight words they recognize. When a child creates a plan for improving their achievement, it gives him/her ownership of his/her learning and empowers him/her to reach that goal. Students need to be aware that hard work and persistence are the ways to success. Praising students for their efforts toward reaching their goals is extremely important and allows students to develop a Growth Mindset.
You play an important role in the success of your childβs education. Teaching your child to persevere when things are difficult will promote his/her self-esteem. Help him/her achieve his/her goals in the classroom by remaining connected to the process. Finally, supporting his/her education ensures your child will succeed. Thank you for your continued support. We have much to look forward to in 2025!
Educationally Yours,
Ms. Andrea Verellen

Great Kindness Challenge Week 1/27-1/31
In our ever changing world, it is evident that we need more kindness. Being kind to ourselves is just as important as being kind to others.
Each year, Mohawk Elementary participates in The Great Kindness Challenge! During the week of January 27th-31st, we will join thousands of schools across the country to create a culture of kindness. Your child is part of a powerful and positive bullying prevention initiative that will lead to more kindness, unity and respect at school and beyond.
Each day of The Great Kindness Challenge, students are invited to participate in our spirit days, located on the back of this letter. Students will also be asked to complete a Kindness Checklist to show how they can make a difference by being kind.
You and your family can participate in The Great Kindness Challenge at home. For more information, please visit:
www.greatkindnesschallenge.org
Thank you in advance for helping to create a culture of kindness and compassion in our school community and beyond!

π₯ͺ FOOD SERVICE NEWS π₯
Ordering Lunch π±
It is important that students order lunch the day before they plan to eat from the school cafeteria. When students do not order lunch, but come up to get a meal, it leads to unexpected shortages and impacts the next group of students.
Our cafeteria team works hard to prepare enough food for everyone, but accurate lunch orders are essential for us to serve all students effectively. If your child tries to get a hot lunch but has not ordered it the day before, they will be given an alternate option.
Hereβs how you can help:
- Review Lunch Procedures: Please remind your child to order their lunch the day before. Teachers normally take lunch count in the morning for the next day.
- Pack a Lunch as a Backup: For added flexibility, packing a lunch is always a great option.
Your support helps us ensure every student receives a meal and maintains the smooth operation of our lunch program. If you have any questions or concerns, please donβt hesitate to reach out to us.
