CORE WORD OF THE WEEK: GET
"get" is a great word for choice making and a great word to practice in directions
1. Create opportunities to model “get” by starting an activity without all the necessary items. Model “get” or else you can’t complete the task! Some examples:
- Drawing, give them paper, but no crayons! Model “get” crayons
- Cooking, give them the bowl, but no spoon to stir! Model “get” spoon
- Putting on shoes, give them shoes, but no socks! Model “get” socks
- Going in the door/car, with no key! Model “get” key
- Walking the dog, with no leash! Model “get” leash
- Cutting, without scissors; Glueing, without glue! Model “get”
- Try reading the book without your glasses! Model “get” glasses
- Help bring in the laundry, without the basket! Model “get” basket
2. Talk about things you need to “get” to go somewhere, e.g. going outside? “get” your hat; going shopping? “get” your money; playing soccer? “get” your ball.
3. During active play, give directions on the play equipment, such as: “get in”, “get out”, “get up”, “get down”, “get off”, “get on”
- You could also do this with a fort or box that you build at home
4. Put things needed for an activity (craft, cooking, science, table-top, drawing, anything!) on a high shelf or in a clear box, that are in sight but out of reach to the students. Model “get” as you reach and get each item to get ready for the activity.
5. Read the book (via link below): THE DUCKLING GETS A COOKIE by Mo Willems. You can model "get" each time you see the duck with the cookie
Sing: Speech Strategy of the Week
Putting words to music can build, ease, and improve recall of language.
Music has been shown to have many advantages: improving academics, teaching babies to listen, reduce stuttering are just a few examples.
Example: Just use a sing songy voice to gain your child's attention
