DASH for the Holidays
Thank you to all the families who helped to make this year's event a success. Thank you to all of the volunteers that came to join and/or run with the students on Friday and huge thank you to our families for all of the generous donations to help provide gift cards to our families at BBHES who may need a little extra this time of year. Thank you to our teachers for rearranging your schedules. Lastly, thank you to everyone that helped organize this fun event!
Character Strong Awards
During the month of November, our students focused on the word GRATITUDE. We worked hard everyday to show appreciation. There were 5 kids in each grade level recognized for being character leaders by showing gratitude! Each of the students earned a gold coin for the book vending machine and chose a book with the principals. Congratulations! We are looking forward to December's character strong word--RESPONSIBILITY!
Second Grade CogAT
The State of Ohio requires school districts to offer whole-grade testing to all students for the purpose of gifted identification twice during their education. All 2nd-grade students will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) at school during the window of February 3 - 7, 2025.
About Testing:
The CogAT measures overall cognitive and reasoning abilities that can assist teachers with instructional planning. Based on the CogAT results, some students will be further evaluated for creative thinking ability using the Scales for Rating the Behavioral Characteristics of Superior Students (SRBCSS). Throughout the school year, students are also assessed on content-specific skills in the areas of reading and math on the I-Ready Assessment. The I-Ready Assessment helps teachers identify where the skills of students are most and least developed, so they can adapt curriculum and instruction accordingly. Additionally, we use the results from all of these tests to identify students who may qualify for gifted services or who may require additional testing for identification.
Test Preparation:
Make sure your child is in school and on time on test days, unless they are sick or have a fever.
Remind your child that these are not tests that they can study for, and they will not count for a grade.
Encourage your child to try their best.
If you do not want your child to participate in this whole-grade testing, please contact Lisa Mollica, Coordinator of Gifted Services at(440) 470-4107 | mollical@bbhcsd.org.
After testing is completed, a copy of the scores will be sent home with your child in their backpack. Please contact Lisa for additional information or with any questions that might arise.
A Huge Thank you from Our Veterans!
The Veteran's were extremely grateful for the candy donations and crafts. Thank you to Mr. Day for organizing and delivering!
Lunch Volunteer Friendly Reminders
We are so thankful to the parents who come in to assist during lunch. The extra hands are so helpful!
Here are a few reminder:
- Please be sure that volunteers are circulating around the cafeteria to assist our K-2 students with opening lunch items and encouraging PAX behaviors. Students will raise their hands for assistance, to ask for permission to take their trays to the counter or use the restroom. Please be on the lookout for hands raised :-)
- Please do not take any photos/videos while volunteering. We have students who should not be photographed and we need to ensure safety for all students.
Important Dates
December 16th-20th: Holiday Spirit Week
December 20th: Classroom Holiday Parties
December 23rd-January 3rd: Winter Break, no school. Students return on Monday, January 6th.

To celebrate this season of giving, all of our PreK through 5th-grade students will participate in a DASH for the Holidays - a Fun Run around BBHES on December 6th. Thank you for your support of this very worthwhile project and have a happy, healthy holiday season!

Implementation of these new requirements began in the 2023-2024 school year and will continue for all K-6 students in the 2024-2025 school year.

We Need Your Help!
- Please check your child's backpack to ensure that no toys are coming to school from home. This includes trading cards, stuffed animals, footballs, electronics, etc. We cannot be responsible for lost, stolen, or broken items, so it's best to keep them safe at home. On occasion, a classroom teacher will have a special day for items to be brought to school, but it will be clearly communicated in your classroom teacher's newsletter.
- We are so lucky to have parents take time out of their days to volunteer in our cafeteria and building everyday. This is a friendly reminder if you are volunteering in the building, please do not take pictures of the students while you are volunteering. There are good reasons not to, and we ask that you please help us with this expectation.

Report Cards
Students in Grades 1 and 2 brought home their report card on Friday. Kindergarten students will bring home report cards at the end of the second quarter.
Just a reminder - the grading system used is M, P, E and/or X. As students are working towards mastery, the following letters mean:
M=Meeting all the Criteria for Grade Level Standards
P=Progressing toward grade level standards
E=Experiencing difficulty with grade level standards
X=Not Graded (or you will notice a grayed out box)
You will find that social studies, science, and special classes do not have a grade because those are semester grades. The grades for those particular classes will show up on quarter 2 report cards.
Please take some time to review the marks as well as the comments written by the teachers. I am extremely proud of our students and the progress they are making. Thank you for being a partner in their education!

Basketball Jones
Our amazing BBHES PSO so kindly brought in Jim Basketball Jones for all elementary students Friday, 10/18. He was more than entertaining with his basketball tricks, simon says, and dancing. The kids did nothing but smiled, laugh, and most importantly encouraged each other during the assembly! The best part of the assembly is the message Jim Basketball Jones delivered to our students. The message was simply, never stop trying, do your best, be kind, help a friend, and believe in yourself! The way the students treated one another through respect, kindness, and compassion gave the adults in the room goosebumps because it was just wonderful to see.
Halloween Fun at BBHES!
Classroom parties will take place on Friday, October 25th. Please be reminded that all volunteers will need to check in at the reception desk with a driver's license to create a visitor badge through Lobby Guard. A driver's license is required for check-in.
All party helpers for Kindergarten and First Grade must enter and exit through the preschool doors. Second grade helpers must enter at the main doors to check in.
Children are permitted to wear a simple Halloween costume to school on Friday. Please see the costume guidelines below.
Costumes should not impact the student's ability to be transported to school nor impact their ability to participate in learning activities throughout the day.
Masks are not permitted as part of the costume.
Children are to WEAR THEIR COSTUMES TO SCHOOL and will keep them on throughout the day.
Costumes should be fun and appropriate as opposed to costumes that depict blood, violence, death, or gruesome in nature. Offensive costumes should not be worn and no weapons or fake blood should be brought to school.
Makeup or face paint should not be a part of your child’s costume for school.
Please plan for costumes to be comfortable and not big and bulky, as students will be wearing them throughout the day. Please help to ensure that costumes for our younger students do not restrict the ability to independently use the bathroom. Thank you!
Students will not wear costumes on October 31st, but instead wear Halloween themed shirts/colors.
Parking during Parties
Just a reminder that all cars must park in designated parking spots. When parking is limited, please use the lot near the Blossom Hill Turf field. Families can use the access road to access the school. Please do not make up additional spots along curbs. This creates a safety concern should any emergency vehicles need to arrive on our campus. Thank you!
Report Cards
Students in grades first and second will bring home a printed report card on Friday, October 25, 2024. Students in kindergarten will bring home a printed report card on Friday, January 22, 2024. The purpose of report cards is to communicate student progress to parents based on the Ohio Learning Standards.
Because of the developmental process of learning Ohio’s state standards in the primary grades, students need continual explicit and systematic instruction in literacy to become accurate and automatic readers. Students must accurately and automatically “apply the code” of 44 phonemes (sounds) and 26 graphemes (letters) to read fluently. This takes time and practice in the early grades.
Equally important is the building of background knowledge in pursuit of a strong and vast working vocabulary that students can draw from when reading texts. Building background knowledge—with strong phonics and fluency skills—is vital for comprehension skills. Oral language development through read-alouds and interactive dialogue also aids in comprehension.
For students to become effective writers, they must receive explicit instruction on how to form letters, then write words and complete sentences to express coherent thoughts.
Students in grades K-2 will be assessed using the following marks based on Ohio’s Learning Standards - ELA MATH SCI SS based on this point in the school year. Markings for social studies, science, and specials are reported at the semester.
M = Meeting the criteria for grad level standards
P = Progressing toward grade level standards
E = Experiencing difficulty with grade level standards
Areas grayed out on the report card are not formally assessed at this time. Please reach out with any questions you may have. Thanks for being a partner in your child’s learning.
Volunteers Needed
Do you know a retired teachers who would like to donate some of their time and expertise to our school? We are looking for some volunteers to assist with small groups or one on one activities with our students. Our students would love working with them. Complete this form if interested.

Class Party Sign ups
The Room Parent Liaisons have gone through orientation and are excited to start planning their classroom parties! Besides one room parent, each homeroom is in need of three additional volunteers in grades K-2 and two additional volunteers in grades 3-5 to help during the parties. Also, there is an alternate volunteer spot in each classroom available that will be called upon if a volunteer is not able to make it. If you are interested in volunteering to help at a class party, please see the information below:
- Each family may only sign-up to volunteer for one party in their child's classroom at this time.
- The person volunteering must help throughout the whole party, please do not volunteer if you can’t be there the whole time.
- A background check is not required for the person volunteering for the party.
If you are unable to attend or all time slots are full, don’t worry you will still be able to contribute to the party. Each classroom will have their own sign-up for snacks, crafts and games as the parties get closer. We understand that a classroom may have more volunteers than spots allow, if that is the case, please consider volunteering during lunch or during any of the evening or weekend PSO events throughout the year.
Important note: The End of the Year party date/time has not been decided yet so it will not be included in this sign-up.
Please reach out to your Room Parent Liaisons or Grade Level Room Parent Coordinator with any questions.

Student Recognition at BBHES Primary!
At BBHES Primary we have started three new ways to recognize and reward expectational PAX leaders: Bee Your Best Beestro, Character Counts, and Tootle Slide Winners. Remember PAX leaders are students who make choices for themselves that affect the way others feel to make our school a peaceful, safe and happy place to learn and play.
- The Bee Your Best Beestro is a special luncheon that is delightfully set-up on our stage during each grade level lunch period. One student from each classroom is nominated by their teacher for consistently exhibiting PAX Leader choices. These children are invited to eat lunch on the stage with the other PAX Leaders, receive a crown and are praised and joined by building and district administration.
- For Character Counts, each month, starting in October, BBHES will focus on a different character trait of a good PAX leader to help bring self awareness to certain characteristics. We will be on the lookout for students who display these character traits. Each month the "Character Trait Word" will be paired with a color. The goal is to WEAR that COLOR every WEDNESDAY of the month, as this will help us build the conversation in the classroom, as well as at home. Approximately 5 teachers per grade level will nominate one student per month who has represented that Character Counts trait/word the most during that specific month. Those students will receive a book token for the Book Vending Machine. The word of the month is RESPECT and students should wear ORANGE every Wednesday in October.
- Tootles are special notes that any staff member can give to any student. All the Tootles for a grade level are put into a lottery. Six names are pulled out of the pot each week and those winners get to go down the slide. Their photos are always posted in this newsletter.
Counselors Corner
Each month, we’ll send PurposeFull Pursuits to provide fun challenges you can pursue together! These are simple ways to intentionally reinforce the skills we are working on at school, while providing fun strategies to grow together as a family. We invite you to make some memories and join in the fun!

Lost and Found
Please bookmark these links for quick access.
When your child is missing an item, it will first appear in the grade level lost and found. At the end of the week, all unclaimed items will be moved to the main lost and found carts near the fieldhouse. Thank you to our PSO volunteers for helping to get this new process underway!
Just a reminder that all items sent to school should be labeled with your child's first and last name. This will allow any lost items to be returned!
Benchmark Assessments
Students in grades K-2 will be taking the beginning of the year benchmark assessment for reading skills beginning this week:
- Kindergarten students will be assessed using a one on one assessment called Acadience. It will focus on First Sound Fluency and Letter Naming Fluency.
- First grade students will be assessed using Acadience which will include Letter Naming Fluency, Phoneme Segmentation Fluency, Nonsense Word Fluency Correct Letter Sounds.
- Our second graders will take the reading diagnostic in i-Ready. The i-Ready Diagnostic for Reading assesses six domains (Phonological Awareness, Phonics, High Frequency Words, Vocabulary, Comprehension of Informational Text, and Comprehension of Literature).
These assessments will give our teachers baseline data for the year and measure whether a student is on track or not on track for reading at grade level according to the previous year’s end-of-year standards. All students who are not on track, based on these assessments will be provided a Reading Intervention Monitoring Plan (RIMP).
Our K-2 students will also be administered the i-Ready math diagnostic to identify strengths and challenges in the five domains: Number and Operations, Algebra and Algebraic Thinking, Measurement and Data, and Geometry. Family reports will be sent home to families in mid-late October.
PikMyKid Reminders for Car Pick-up
- Utilize the Announce Button on your PikMyKid App. When it turns Green, it signals you're in line to Pick Up Your Kid. This feature helps us sequence the children in the same order as you entered the campus, expediting the dismissal process. You can also turn on the auto announce feature. Hands-Free Announcing on the PikMyKid Parent App
Parking Lot Safety
Please be sure to obey ALL traffic signs in the parking lot. I frequently witness cars entering the lot where signs are clearly posted as an exit only. Also, there have been many cars trying to avoid the drop off line in the morning pulling into the lot and dropping kids off. Kids cannot e walking through the parking lot unattended. If you do not use the drop off loop, you MUST park and then walk your child to the door. Thank you for your help in keeping everyone safe.

PBIS
Mr. Hartland and I met with all of our students to review behavior expectations as part of our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program, a schoolwide initiative designed to cultivate positive behavior and enhance the learning environment for all students. At the heart of the PBIS program is the belief that recognizing and rewarding positive behaviors can help students develop intrinsic motivation.
Our students use a program called PAX. PAX is Latin for peace. The PAX program focuses on peace, productivity, health and happiness for all students. The goal of PAX is for students to be able to self-monitor and self-regulate their behavior in different settings. Behavior management is done in positive ways that provide immediate feedback to students. Students celebrate good decisions and appropriate behavior frequently.
Students are earning Tootles for being positive PAX leaders throughout the day. Tootles are the opposite of tattles. Tootling is looking for the positive actions of others, and telling them or others about the actions. Tootles improve behavior, character, and social competence and reduce aggression or bullying in schools.
Safety Drills at BBHES
Every month, we are required to conduct safety drills in Ohio public schools. Last Thursday, we conducted a rapid evacuation drill commonly used in the event of a fire. Our students did an amazing job and followed the proper procedures by quickly evacuating the building and proceeding to their meeting points. I am proud of the students for listening and following the directions during this drill.
Throughout the school year, we will have various drills including, fire drills, tornado drills, lockdown drills, and shelter in place drills. We conduct these drills to practice in the event we must initiate any of these situations.
Beekeeper Drop-Off
Families who utilize our before school and after school Beekeeper Program must park in a designated parking spot in the lot. Please do not park in the drop off loop. This is a fire lane. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
School Fees
School fees for students in grades Kindergarten through 2nd grade are $85.00 ($65 instructional fee and $20 Technology Fee). You may pay these online at https://www.payschoolscentral.com or send a check payable to BBHES. Please note that unpaid fees may result in your child not attending upcoming field trips. School fee waivers are available to those families who qualify. An application must be completed. Please review the application information here
Counselor Corner
We are thankful for you being part of our school community! The world is changing quickly and we want to do everything we can to help students be successful in school and life. We are excited to tell you that we will be using a program called PurposeFull People this year. This program teaches skills that will help students be successful in school and in life. We believe that students should have safe, predictable places to learn where they feel included. Students should have healthy and helpful connections with teachers and classmates. They should also experience learning that will help them tackle challenges inside and outside of school. PurposeFull People is more than a set of lessons - it is a partnership between schools and families to create a place where students feel like they belong and learn skills that will help them be the best they can be!
Purposefull People has three main goals for students: Be Kind, Be Strong, and Be Well.
Be Kind: Social skills like listening, friendship, solving conflicts, and leadership.
- These skills are taught alongside Empathy, Respect, & Cooperation
Be Strong: Skills that help students focus, stay organized, and set goals.
- These skills are taught alongside Responsibility, Courage, & Perseverance
Be Well: Skills that help students handle their emotions and deal with stress.
- These skills are taught alongside Gratitude, Honesty, & Creativity
This year, you’ll be invited to join the fun! We will send letters home about the skills and strengths being taught each month. Each letter will include some ways to build these skills at home, discussion starters, and fun challenges you can try with your family. The path forward is full of growth! We cannot wait to partner with you in this work...
- To teach students how to build strong friendships
- To work together to solve problems, big and small
- To grow skills for life
- To become PurposeFull People
With Gratitude,
The Primary School Counselors
Mrs. Clapper and Mrs. Holub
Lunch Menu
Here is the K-2 lunch menu for September.
Lost and Found
An updated lost and found process has been underway since last week and we are
already collecting items.
Items left behind at lunch or recess are being collected daily by grade level and taken to a collection point within each pod. Students should look for items at this location as soon as they realize an item got left behind.
At the end of each week these items are consolidated into the larger lost and found
collection area. Upon consolidation, volunteers will sort items looking for name tags
and deliver to classrooms accordingly. Help us reunite items with your child by ensuring all outerwear, sweatshirts, lunch boxes, and water bottles are clearly labeled with your child’s first and last name.
The consolidated collection point is where parents are able to look for items during the following hours:
Monday-Friday, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM and Sunday, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM > visit Blossom Hill Fieldhouse front desk
You may view items online. Please send questions to lostandfound.bbhespso@gmail.com.

We had an amazing start to the school year. A huge thank you to the staff, students, and families for their help in making it a success!
We cannot wait to have our kindergarten students arrive on Monday for their first day of school. To ensure a smooth and safe arrival of our students, please refrain from exiting your cars at drop-off. Staff will open the car doors for your children and help them exit your vehicle safely from the passenger side. Please pull all the way up in the line and follow the directions from our wonderful arrival staff! They are here to help your children get into the building. Also remember that if you will be picking up your child from school at the end of the day, please use the PikMyKid App and have your dismissal tag displayed in your car. Thank you for doing your part in assisting our staff to make our first day of kindergarten run smoothly.
Reminders
- Please be sure that your PikMyKid Default is set. Families will no longer be able to change the default mode after Monday. Any changes to dismissal modes must be done through the calendar on the app. If your default must change during the year, please notify your child's grade-level secretary.
- Please label all lunch boxes with your child's first and last name.
- Phones and Smartwatches are not permitted to be used throughout the day for texting/phone calls. All devices should be stored in your child's backpack.
- The reception area is open from 8:00 - 4:30. This means that a BBHES staff will answer the door and phone lines during this time.
- Kindergarten tuition credits may be delayed showing up in your accounts due to our new student information system upgrade. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Message from PSO...
The Parent School Organization (PSO) is running its annual membership drive. The PSO is the backbone of the BBHES's strong parent support system and provides an excellent opportunity for families to share the school experience with their children. PSO membership dues ($10 per family) support fun, educational programs for students. For more information, visit our website. We hope you will join us!
In addition to supporting various programs and events, we coordinate volunteers. We are currently recruiting room parents. Want to be a Room Parent Liaison? It is a volunteer position that assists the classroom and teacher. Their function is to facilitate communication between the teacher and parents. Additionally, the Room Parent Liaison(s) are responsible for planning class parties and sending supplies/snack sign-ups. Each Room Parent will be allowed to attend two of the four class parties.
Applications will be accepted until the end of the day on Friday, September 6th.
*Room Parents are REQUIRED to be background checked via the district’s vendor. It’s no cost to you, so hop on over to this LINK to submit yours today! PSO Membership is also required.
Please know all room parent selections are made as fairly as possible, using a random selection process. Unfortunately, not everyone who applies will be selected.
If you have any questions, please email Sarah Pribble, 2nd VP Volunteer Coordinator at volunteervp.bbhespso@gmail.com.

An Exciting Year Ahead
We are days away from the 2024-2025 school year, and Mr. Hartland and I could not be more excited to welcome your children to BBHES. This year, BBHES will be operating as two schools under one roof. The primary school will house our kindergarten through second grade students and our intermediate school will house our third through fifth grade students. I will be leading the K-2 primary school with Mr. Hartland as my associate principal; Mr. Magyar and Ms. McCauley will be leading the intermediate school. We are excited about this opportunity and look forward to building lasting relationships with the students and families at BBHES.
The information in my newsletters will be specific to our Kindergarten through Grade 2 students and families. If you have students in grades 3-5, please refer to Mr. Magyar's newsletter for news from the intermediate school.
Just reminder that our first and second grade families will have an opportunity to meet their teachers, drop of supplies, pay school fees, and see their new classmates next week. The first grade meet and greet is scheduled for Monday at 4:00pm and Second grade is scheduled for Tuesday at 4:00pm.
Our kindergarten students will meet their teacher, drop off supplies, and participate in some fun learning activities during phase-in. Sign ups have been emailed to the families. Please sign up for one day on August 21st, 22nd, or 23rd. We are eager to meet our new bees!
First Day of School Signs
BBHES families are encouraged to celebrate their student’s first day of school by sharing photos of their student with a First Day of School Sign on social media. Families can download and print a First Day of School Sign for their student’s grade level below.
Kindergarten
First Grade
Second Grade
Throughout your student's first day of school for the 2024-2025 School Year, take a moment to snap a picture with their First Day of School Sign and share it using #BBHeritage on your favorite social media platform, being sure to tag the District and building, which can be found on Facebook and Twitter, @BBHES_Primary and @bbhcsd and Instagram, @bbhschools.
Important Dismissal Reminder
- All PikMyKid accounts have been defaulted to "Bus". All families must download the app and make the necessary change in PikMyKid for car pick-up, afterschool beekeepers, walkers, or afterschool clubs. Please default your account to the dismissal mode your child will use on a regular basis. Daily and reoccurring changes can be made by clicking on the dates needed for a change within the app. If you do not change your child's dismissal mode prior to the first day of school, your child will ride the bus home on that day. For more information on downloading Pikmykid, please reference the information below.
- Any changes in dismissal modes must be changed in your Pikmykid account no later than 2:30 pm. If you need assistance with this process, please email or call Mrs. Melody Davies.
- Display all car tags so they can be easily seen by our dismissal team. All families were provided a tag during the Meet and Greets. Please keep them in your cars even if car pick-up is not your primary mode. We use these tags in the event of an emergency as well.
- Please be sure to obey ALL traffic signs in the parking lot. I frequently witness cars entering the lot where signs are clearly posted as an exit only. Thank you for your help in keeping everyone safe.
- If you need to pick up your child early, please make sure to park, come in, and sign out your child prior to 2:45 pm. No early dismissals after this time. We will not release a child to an adult without the proper identification, so please bring your driver's license.
- All walkers and bikes will be picked up on the sidewalk near the preschool. A staff member will cross the students and meet families on the north side of the property. Parents are not permitted to pick up walkers/bikers at the building/doors.
Additional PikMyKid Information
BBHES will continue to use the PikMyKid dismissal application this school year just like last year. The student information should still be populated in the program. Your child's car tag number should remain the same as last school year. All families will get a car tag which can be picked up at the Meet and Greets.
If you are not familiar with the app, please download it and review the information below.
PikMyKid is a dismissal software that is intended to simplify dismissal, reduce traffic congestion, and most importantly, improve overall safety. The unique features of PikMyKid allow you, as parents, to easily change pick-up modes, quickly delegate to an alternate individual for pickup, change to an ‘After School’ program, and even schedule for future pickup mode, pickup individual, and after-school programs. This app allows you to be in full control of your child’s dismissal and it gives the school information regarding dismissal and the ability to acknowledge every change and instantly check your child’s dismissal status should you have a question.
To Learn a little more on your own, please check out the following link that will show you a few of the PikMyKid features. https://www.pikmykid.com/features/for-parents/
All families will need to download the application and complete the registration process if not already done.
Below are a few resources to assist with the process.
