School Events
OST Testing Begins
It's time for Spring Ohio State Testing (OST) to start for grades 3-5! These tests are important ways we measure how students are progressing in their learning. Please make sure your student is getting a good night's sleep and coming to school on-time during the testing windows.
Students will start with English Language Arts (ELA) starting March 24 and going through April!
Math OST will be April 10 through May!
Science OST (5th Grade only) will be April 10 through May!
AASCD (ALT. Assessment for MD students) February 24-April 17
Stay in the Game Drawing
Every week, Burroughs students who have perfect attendance (No tardies, absences or early pick-ups) will be entered into a drawing for Columbus Crew prizes. Help your student Stay In The Game by coming to school on time, every day, ready to learn!

English Class for Parents
Our community Partner, Faith Community Church, is offering a beginning English classes to Burroughs' parents. They will be meeting at the school on Tuesdays from 1:30 PM - 3:15 PM. To register please contact Shelly at 352-459-1570. Cost is $10 for the book.

Highland Youth Garden Summer Camps/Jobs
Green Teens (Deadline - Friday, April 11th)
Green Teens is a paid, summer work program at Highland Youth Garden for young people in the Hilltop or Frankinton areas ages 14-19. Students will gain job experience through gardening, money management, food justice, cooking and so much more, all in their neighborhood!
Youth are encouraged to apply by the April 11th deadline!

Spring Garden Club - Begins next week on April 8th!
Tuesday's spots are FULL but we still have 3 spots left for Thursday's group!
Sign your children up for our FREE Garden Club, a weekly afterschool club for grades K-6 students who attend school and/or live in the Hilltop area or Franklinton. Children who participate get to garden, plant seeds, harvest produce, cook food, enjoy garden-based activities, and explore the arts.

Dates: April 8th - May 20th
Hours: 3:30PM - 5:30PM
Garden Club teachers are happy to walk students to the Garden from Highland Elementary, the Educational Academy for Boys and Girls or the J Ashburn Center, upon request.
Summer Camp
Join us for Summer Camp at Highland Youth Garden! Our campers will have a fun-filled week of outdoor play, learning with nature, exploring the arts and eating healthy food!
For ages 6-13, camp will run from 9:00 am - 3:30 pm, Monday-Friday. Healthy snacks and lunch will be provided. HYG Summer Camp is open to children living or going to school in the Hilltop and Franklinton areas. A fee of $25 is required to hold your child's space but this is refundable with good attendance.

Week 2: June 23rd - June 27th
Week 3: July 7th - July 11th
Week 4: July 14th - July 18th

In partnership with the Grange Insurance Audubon Center, Seeds of Caring is hosting an Earth Day Celebration!
CCS students (ages 2-12), along with their caregivers are invited to engage in environmental service projects and activities that include: a book swap (families are encouraged to bring up to 3 gently used books per child to swap for different books), composting and recycling games, upcycled art, wildlife encounters, tree planting (over 300 trees will be available to plant), and so much more.

Help your student stay on track this school year with Columbus Metropolitan Library. They’ll have access to:
- Reading Buddies, 15 minutes of one-on-one reading practice for K-3 students
- School Help Centers, offering K-12 students free help with their schoolwork plus use of computers, printers, digital research tools and other resources
- HelpNow, connecting them one-on-one with a virtual tutor Monday-Friday, 2:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.

John Burroughs is a Title I School
- John Burroughs is a Title I school that receives Federal Title I funding to support academic achievement.
- Title I funding is spent on supplies, materials, staffing, and programs to support student achievement.
- As a parent of a student attending a school that is receiving Federal Title I dollars, you have the right to know the professional qualifications of the teacher(s) and instructional paraprofessional(s) who instruct your child. Federal law requires every Title I school district to comply and to provide you with the requested information in a timely manner. We are happy to provide this information to you. At any time, you may ask.
School Absence Reporting
Parents need to call or email the school by 9:00 AM to report student absences. Upon return from an absence, the following procedure is to be followed:
A written note signed by the parent, stating date(s) of and reason(s) for absence from school. Please send the note to school with your child the day they return to school.

School Sign-out Procedures
If you need to sign-out a student during the school day, please be aware of the following procedures that keep your student safe at school:
IDENTIFICATION IS REQUIRED WHEN SIGNING OUT A STUDENT.
Any students being picked up early must be signed out by a relative / adult that is listed in Infinite Campus. Parent's can list adults allowed to pick-up their student in the Parent Portal. If an unlisted adult needs to pick up a student, the listed Guardian MUST call the school office at 614-365-5923.
Starting April 7, 2023, Ohioans who are 17 years and older can receive an ID card at no cost. https://publicsafety.ohio.gov/static/free-ID-palm-card.pdf
Students cannot be signed out between 2:45-3:15 PM. School dismissal is at 3:15. Thank you for helping us keep kids safe during dismissal.
