On May 9th, Frontier Schools held its 2nd Annual Staff Appreciation Banquet in Pierson Auditorium at University of Missouri – Kansas City. During the evening we celebrated our teachers, staff and our 10 year anniversary! Following a nice buffet style dinner, several awards were given out to teachers and staff including – Teachers of the Year, District Teacher of the Year and Years of Service.

Each administration team in the Frontier Schools district selected one nominee from their building as their campus Teacher of the Year. Each school’s Teacher of the Year nominee then had to submit paperwork to Instructional Coaches. Based on their submissions, Instructional Coaches graded their answers on a rubric system. On May 23rd, District Outreach Coordinator, Jennifer Watson, interviewed our 2016-2017 District Teacher of the Year, Mary Koppe. Mrs. Koppe, a specials teacher at Frontier School of Excellence, shares her thought about Frontier Schools, her teaching style, and much more in the interview below.

On Saturday, May 20th, the very first Frontier STEM High School Senior Class graduated! The class of 26 seniors and their families gathered at UMKC in Pierson Auditorium to send them off to their next big adventure.

The commencement speaker was Dr. Phyllis Chase, Director of UMKC Charter School Center.

Dr. Chase spoke to the graduating class about the importance of laying a foundation built on strength of character and values before the rest - education, experience, and achievements - can fall into place.

Top Honors:

All 26 students were accepted to colleges including – Truman State University, Boston University, Kansas City Art Institute University of San Francisco, Missouri Southern State University, University of Kansas, Missouri Western State University, Kansas State University, Cleveland Institute of Art, University of Missouri – Kansas City, Northwest Missouri State University, University of Central Missouri, and many more.

And they’re off! On Monday, May 22nd, 29 seniors celebrated the completion of their high school career. The graduation ceremony took place at UMKC in Pierson Auditorium. The commencement speaker for the evening was Dr. Marsha Chappelow, DESE Charter School Field Director. Her key takeaways for seniors – the three C's to success – confidence, commitment, and compassion.

On Friday, May 19th, parents and staff celebrated the future Frontier Schools class of 2028-29! Congratulations Kindergartners!

Frontier School of Innovations' 8th Grade class commemorated their promotion at their new home for next year - Frontier STEM High School. After eighth graders received diplomas and heard speeches from their fellow classmates, students danced the night away in celebration of their accomplishments and anticipation of future success!

On May 19th, Frontier School of Excellence held a promotion ceremony in honor of 8th grade students. Parents and guardians celebrated their child’s achievements as they transition into this next phase of their life – high school.

Congratulations 8th Graders! Good luck on your transition to an exciting new phase of your life!

Gymnasium construction is well underway at Frontier School of Innovation. Once the building is fully enclosed in about 5 weeks, interior construction and design will begin. Students and staff are very excited to use their new gymnasium!

Northeast News: Frontier Schools continue expansion in the Northeast

On May 24th, students in the College Readiness Leadership Program (CRLP) arrived at the Wildwood Outdoor Education Center in Lacygne, Kansas for three full days of continuous fun and learning experiences. CRLP camp is a STEM based camp designed to develop student potential in academics, leadership, teamwork, and essential life and personal skills. Educational and recreational activities included guest speakers, reading, campfires, movies, rocket building, wall climbing, zip lining, archery, and so much more.

On May 18th, students in the College Readiness Leadership Program (CRLP) arrived at the Hiawatha Campus & Retreat Center in Wichita, Kansas for three full days of continuous fun and learning experiences. Like the boys camp, this STEM based camp is designed to develop student potential in academics, leadership, teamwork, and essential life and personal skills. Educational and recreational activities included building a mousetrap powered car, reading, wall climbing, zip lining, movies, camp fires, and so much more.

Three of Frontier STEM High School's Junior students were selected out of applicants across the state of Missouri to participate in an eight-day leadership program in order to earn scholarships and become eligible for college credit. They will be attending the 2017 camp this summer from June 17-24.

Each year, KU Department of Mathematics hosts a math competition from students all around the Kansas City metropolitan and surrounding areas for 3rd-5th grade, Middle School, and High School Students. One of our very own Frontier School of Innovation students Ahmed G. - took home third place and a cash prize in the 3rd-5th grade division.

On Thursday, May 18th, Frontier School of Excellence hosted their 1st annual career fair for high school students. 18 employers from the Kansas City area participated, including Brookside Real Estate Company, HOK Architects, EA LA MAR’S Cosmetology & Barber College, Children’s Mercy Hospital, 2mas2KC, Licensed Artist for Lucasfilm – Darryl Woods, U.S. Army, Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. Insurance, International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, Country Club Bank, KC Complete Auto Service, Westbrook & Co., American Dining Creations, Nabholz Construction, Wachter, Thermal Tech, Teague Electric, and Multi Service Corporation. Students had the chance to talk and visit with representatives from both local business and community organizations and to start planning their futures.

Thank you to all who donated their time, experience, and talents with our students!

Frontier STEM High School hosted its third Blood Drive on Wednesday, May 17th. Students, staff, and community members filled 80 appointments and collected over 60 pints of blood.

American Red Cross donated a $500 scholarship for the 2016-2017 drive collection efforts. Frontier STEM High School awarded graduating senior, Kaellyn R., the $500 scholarship in recognition of her outstanding work in the elective course, Human Body Systems, which helped organize the Fall and Spring Blood Drive. Kaellyn will put the money towards her nursing degree at Truman State University for the upcoming year - Congratulations, Kaellyn!

On May 12th, FSI Kindergarteners and 2nd graders experienced a day full of adventure at the KC Zoo! Students ventured throughout the zoo to explore, observe and interact with many animals.
