STEAMapalooza II - 2024
Thursday, May 16, 2024
5:30 - 6:30 at Rochester Memorial School
STEAMapalooza is back! It will be an evening filled with Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. We need scientists and inventors to help with the S.T.E.M. in STEAMapalooza! You can participate in STEAMapalooza 2024 by entering the Science Fair portion of the night in the following ways:
Scientists and Inventors can sign up as a single, pair, or a small group (no more than 4). The categories are:
Grades K, 1, and 2 Singles
Grades K, 1, and 2 Pairs/Small Groups
Grades 3 and 4 Singles
Grades 3 and 4 Pairs/Small Groups
Grades 5 and 6 Singles
Grades 5 and 6 Pairs/Small Groups
Participants may choose one of the following types of projects to present at STEAMapalooza:
Option #1: A concept that allows you to follow the Scientific Method
Option #2: Create an invention that solves a problem by following the Engineering Design Process
There will be no judging. It will be a night of science for the sake of science fun and inquiry!
In addition to the excitement of the Science Fair, the following events will be happening at the same time throughout the school during STEAMapalooza:
The Art Show with Mrs. Hemenway
Music Ensembles with Ms. Audette and Mrs.Laprise
Math Games with Mrs. Mazzuca
STEM Challenges with Mrs. Sollauer
Grade level science demonstrations and presentations throughout the evening
It will be a night celebrating S.T.E.A.M. The evening will conclude with 3rd grade families being invited to the Recorder Concert happening at 6:30PM.
Contact STEM Specialist Scott Huckabee with any questions: scotthuckabee@oldrochester.org
- Students can present their findings on a tri-fold board, Google Slides, science notebook, or other project choice that can be brought to STEAMapalooza.
- Additional items that help people understand what happened can be displayed in front of the board.
- Please note that students are responsible for any items/technology brought with them.
Option #1: The Scientific Method
Entrants following The Scientific Method will attempt to answer a question about the physical world around us. For example: Do plants need water and sun to grow? Are there more germs in a dog’s mouth or a person’s mouth? Which activities in Phys Ed get a person’s heart rate going the fastest in one minute?
Projects Should Include:
1. Title
2. Problem: Choose a question to guide your investigation. What are you trying to find an answer to?
3. Research: (Grades 4-6 optional k-3) Include research; before you experiment you need to learn about the topic!
4. Hypothesis: What do you predict will happen in the experiment? It’s OK to be wrong!
5. Procedure: List a step-by-step procedure of how the experiment will take place.
6. Materials: Include a list of materials used.
7. Data: What were the results of your experiment? How will you organize the data? Include lists, graphs, or charts of your findings. (Remember that when running an experiment, or testing something, it needs to be done at least three times. Seeing something happen once is not strong evidence. Three times is a minimum, the more the better.)
8. Conclusion: What did you learn after looking at your data? Was your hypothesis correct or incorrect? Why? How do you know? Can you draw any conclusions or think of ways to change the experiment in the future?
9. Pictures/Photos: Photographs, drawings, diagrams, graphs, tables, and/or charts should be included.
10. Your Name(s), Grade Level, and Category are on your display.
Option #2: Create an Invention That Solves a Problem (Engineering Design Process)
Entrants following the Engineering Design Process will create an invention that produces a solution to a need or want. For example: last year a device was invented to clean a dirt bike, a better way to evenly butter all the noodles in a pot, a neater way to handle recyclables, a way to keep sand out of the house, or a way to pick up your Legos after playing with them. You decide! Your prototype can be an original design or improvement to an existing product.
Project Should Include:
Ask: What is the problem? State it as a question. Are there any constraints, or rules to follow?
Imagine: Brainstorm lots of ideas and/or conduct research: have people attempted to solve this problem before? What could you do differently?
Plan: List the steps followed, include a neat, labeled diagram of your design. (Remember the Engineering Design Process: Identify the problem, Brainstorm, Design, Build, Improve. You will probably need to make multiple prototypes… that’s ok!)
Materials: List materials used to build the prototype and the ideal materials you would use if you were building the real invention.
Create: Build your invention! Bring in your model or prototype if possible, or include pictures.
Results: Test your invention. Did it work? Explain why/why not and if something could be changed.
Improve: How can you improve your invention? If possible, make the improvements. If not, explain what you would do differently.
Name your invention!
Pictures/Photos: Photographs, drawings, diagrams, graphs, tables, and/or charts should be included.
Your Name(s), Grade Level, and Category are on your display.

Get ready for a super cool adventure with Spot, the amazing robot from Boston Dynamics!
Imagine a robot that can walk, climb, and even dance just like a real animal. That’s Spot! Built by the brilliant minds at Boston Dynamics, a place where the future of robots comes to life, Spot is no ordinary robot. It’s designed to go places where humans can go and wheels can’t go, making it super special.
Imagine Spot exploring places too dangerous for people, like disaster zones or helping out in ways only a robot can, like delivering things or even helping scientists and engineers. Spot can walk on rough terrain, climb stairs, and is super smart, knowing how to avoid obstacles and keep its balance, so it won’t fall over. Box Tops for Education Made Easy
Dear Rochester Memorial Elementary School Families,
We are restarting the Box Tops for Education program and reaching out because we need your help. The Box Tops for Education program has been around for 25 years and has given schools one billion dollars since 1996. As a community, we can help give our students what they need to succeed with just a touch of a button.
It's easy! Here's how it works:
· Buy Box Tops products. With thousands of participating products, there are lots of chances to earn!
· Scan your receipt (paper or electronic) with the Box Tops app within 14 days of purchase and automatically earn for Rochester Memorial Elementary School with every Box Tops product you buy.
· Don’t have access to an app? Or don’t have the time? Send in the receipt with the item clearly circled and the box top stapled or paperclipped to the receipt within 14 days of purchase and we can take care of it for you.
Our goal is to earn $10,000 through Box Tops this year to help with field trips.
Remember, you can earn a bonus for our school by referring your friends, family & other parents at RMS to sign up for Box Tops. You'll both earn a bonus when they scan their first receipt with the Box Tops app.
When first adding the app (Please enter referral code- UJZ56EPY).
Every Box Tops product will count towards our goal. Let's make a difference together.
We can do this!
Welcome to our school community where everyone CARES!
Rochester Memorial School welcomes you to our PreK to 6 school. Our student enrollment is just under 500 students and our school is filled with dynamic faculty and staff who are excited to teach every day.
