Tokoroa Intermediate Squash Stars Bring Energy to AIMS Games!
Tokoroa Intermediate’s squash team is absolutely smashing it at the AIMS Games this year! With incredible energy and focus, our four young athletes are giving their all in every match. Each game has been a tough challenge, but these kids are pushing through with grit, determination and huge smiles on their faces.
Supported by the awesome supervision of Alison Hopson, Katie Hunt and Viv Horne, the team is thriving. The positive vibes and team spirit are infectious as they take on strong competition, showing everyone what Tokoroa Intermediate is made of. Their 100% effort and can-do attitude are making the school incredibly proud! Keep it up, team!
Culture Fest
Next weekend (Saturday, September 21st) our local biannual Cultural Festival is being held at the South Waikato Sports and Events Centre. The festival starts at 8am and will go until around 5.30 to 6 pm. Our school is standing at around 5.15pm. All students involved will be given a newsletter with detailed information they will need for the day.
Tickets will be on sale in our office from Monday next week (16th September). These will cost $5 per adult and $2 per child. Infants are free if they are going to be held by an adult. Tickets will ensure you a faster entry on the day as you will not have to wait in line for ticket sales.
Please come and support Kapa Ahurea, our combined Kapa Haka, Cook Island and Samoan Performing Arts group.
TIS Rusty Demons Evolocity Team
On Monday 9 September we, the TIS Rusty Demons, (Chevy, Taeyang, Dan, Hunta and Rylan) went on a trip to Hamilton for our Warrant of Fitness for our eVolocity bike that we have been working on. As we got there early, the wait enabled us to put the new metal sprocket on because it arrived on the courier right before we left Tokoroa.
Once we found the Evolocity people we took our bike to block G where they were doing the Warrant of fitness. We parked our bike inside and talked about what we have done to our bike to make it an electrical bike. We told them all the modifications and who our sponsors were. Once we finished talking, Sam the scrutineer, did our WOF and checked everything. We still have a few things to modify. Once we finished our WOF, we had a look at some other teams' builds; some were not finished and looked a bit funny, but we thought we had the coolest out of them all. We all wanted to ride our bike since we had put the new sprocket on so we did. We all had fun until the bike stopped working. We thought the battery had died, but didn't think too much about it. We put away the bike back into the van and played tag together until our sponsor Dominos hooked us up with some free pizza.
From here we still need to work on our Race number (886) to ensure it is fitted on the front and sides and visible at 15m distances. The seat is still in the process of being made and we need need to sort our brakes, so that our bike will stop when we need it to. We also need to make sure that all moving parts on the drivetrain are covered, preventing hands, fingers, clothing from getting caught. We are still working making the wires and terminals on our bike are cable managed and unable to chafe, being protected from moving parts. We are very grateful for the help of Ashley at 3MI for all the engineering work and Chris at Holsters Supplies, who has sponsored us for some of the things we need (bolts and nuts etc).
Hunta and Rylan are the two who are in charge of the seat. They are working on the seats with milk bottle caps. They have melted the bottle caps in an oven and flattened it with an iron. They will work with Bill and Eva at Kiwifil and Pin from the Tokoroa Auto Trimmers to make us a good seat.
Chevy is working on the wires and surprisingly hasn't shocked himself. Dan has designed our number plates with our 3D printer and is learning that sometimes it takes more than one try at getting it right.
Taeyang is experienced in 3D modelling using Blender, but is currently learning to use onShape to make our custom pieces we need. He is learning that sometimes it takes more than once if we don’t plan our pieces well the first time. Dan is learning to use onShape too.
Our big race day is on the 22 October, and we are working hard to ensure we will present the best electric bike we can. What we are also learning is that it takes a whole lot longer than we think.
School Uniforms
If students come to school in incorrect uniform (i.e. shoes are broken, items got lost), please send them with a note, explaining why they are in incorrect uniform and when the issue will be resolved, so they can obtain a uniform exemption.
Hue Toi
Our Maara Kai grew hue over the summer break. They grew in a large variety of shapes and sizes. Mrs Stephenson has been drying them in her classroom.
I was given the opportunity to create a design for hue. After I created my design I got to choose my hue; I chose one of the smallest ones but it had a lot of mould. We soaked the hue in water with paper towels so that the mould would come off easier. We all got given a ruler to scrape it all off. After a week of drying I finally got to paint my design. After I finished the painting I poked holes with nails, so when there is light inside it glows.
