Message from the Superintendent
Dear South Bay Community,
As part of the district’s Reflect, Redefine, and Rebuild initiative, we created the Asset Management Superintendent's Advisory Committee to assess our facilities and their use to ensure that our sites are running efficiently and are aligned with the needs of the community we serve. This included reviewing the space and capacity of each school and enrollment trends by site, as well as recommending potential options to mitigate the impact of declining enrollment. To put this in context, South Bay is projected to lose nearly 50% of our student population since 2011.
The Committee, comprised of staff, parents, and community members, has met four times this school year, with an additional meeting in March. However, the Committee has reached consensus on their recommendations, which involve the potential consolidation of Central, Mendoza, and/or Nestor Language Academy. To eliminate any misunderstandings or confusion among our families and staff, we want to share an update on the next steps.
I will be meeting with the Committee in March to review and discuss their final recommendations. Once that is complete, we will be hosting Town Hall meetings to share the work of the Committee with the community, answer questions, and discuss any concerns. The final step in the process will be presenting a plan to the Board of Trustees for approval. Please know, any school consolidations will be phased in and we do not expect any of the recommendations to take effect until the 2025-2026 school year.
Following is the schedule of Town Hall meetings:
- Wednesday, April 3 at 5:30 PM at Mendoza School (2050 Coronado Avenue in San Diego)
- Wednesday, April 17 at 5:30 PM at Nestor Language Academy (1455 Hollister Street in San Diego)
- Wednesday, April 24 at 5:30 PM at Central School (1290 Ebony Avenue in Imperial Beach)
We hope you can join at one or more of these meetings. You may also find additional information on the Asset Management Superintendent's Advisory Committee website, which includes a button to submit questions or feedback. Please visit this site for updates and announcements.
Thank you for your participation in this process and for your support as we move forward.
