WHPE Update August, 2021
"Reach Everyone"
Greetings,
Since you received the July SMORE, good things have been happening on the Wisconsin sports scene. The Milwaukee Bucks won the NBA championship. The Milwaukee Brewers continue to have a strong hold on first place it their division, at least as of August 1. And, the Green Bay Packers appear to be one of the best teams in the NFL this season. It’s an exciting time in Wisconsin with all three teams playing at a championship level.
Strengths and Weaknesses
How does a team attain a championship level? It has to be well coached. Or we could say it has to be well taught. A good coach knows how to maximize the strengths of their players and minimize their weaknesses. Good teams will play to their strengths and attempt to hide their weaknesses.
Teachers have certain strengths and weaknesses. We are all better at certain things and not as good at other things. It’s great when we can teach to our strengths, but at times, we have to do things or teach certain content that may not be considered a strength for us.
Professional Development
Part of the WHPE mission is to reach everyone in the organization with professional development, giving individuals opportunities to strengthen areas they want to improve. Along with other information, this SMORE reiterates professional development opportunities offered by WHPE – Summer Demo Slam, WHPE Convention. Facebook. The organization strives to help members improve themselves throughout the year.
I hope you will take part in the opportunities available to you. If you have never attended a Demo Slam, it is a collection of quick-hitting great ideas. If you have never been to the WHPE Convention, why not start this year. There will be an awesome list of presenters and topics. If you have not visited the WHPE Facebook page, you’re missing an opportunity for professional and personal improvement. If you're looking for some other form of professional development, please let me know.
Best wishes. Enjoy the last unofficial month of summer.

WHPE President
Reach Everyone
Summer Demo Slam
Looking for some new ideas for the school year? WHPE will be providing a Demo Slam around the middle of August. Board members will be sharing 2-minute videos of things they use in their teaching. Members will be notified when the videos are available for viewing.
New Health Division Vice President
In the July SMORE, I mentioned WHPE had a new Health Division as of July 1. At the summer Board meeting, Mary Wentland was approved as the new Health Division Vice President. Mary had been serving as the Health Advisor on the Board of Directors and has kept health education as an integral part of what WHPE does. She was instrumental in overseeing the health sessions for this fall’s convention. Congratulations, Mary!
Strategic Plan Update - Almost Done
I've been talking for months about the new Strategic Plan and it is almost completed. Board members have formulated action items that will enable the strategic goals to be met and recommendations on how to achieve the respective action items. The overall Strategic Plan has been reviewed and the final writing has begun. We should have an approved Strategic Plan by the time the September SMORE comes out.
WHPE Convention
October 27-29 are the dates for this year’s in-person WHPE Convention at the Kalahari Resorts and Conventions in Wisconsin Dells. Will you be attending? Have you arranged to have time off from school to attend? Scott Todnem, 2019 SHAPE America National Health Teacher-of-the-Year will be the Keynote Speaker during Thursday’s General Assembly. Karen Fish, 2015 SHAPE America Midwest District Young Professional Physical Education Teacher-of-the-Year will be a Featured Speaker. Additionally, WHPE’s own Shannon Maly, 2021 SHAPE America National High School Physical Education Teacher-of-the-Year and Allisha Blanchette, 2020 Midwest District Health Teacher-of-the-Year, will be presenting. All told, the 2021 convention will feature 10 individuals who have received SHAPE America national and/or district teacher-of-the-year recognition.
In other sessions, Stephanie Morris, Chief Executive Officer, and Brett Fuller, Past President, of SHAPE America will discuss initiatives at the national organization. Closer to home, Penny Kroening, WHPE Executive Director, Brett Fuller, and Tacara Lovings, DPI Health Education and Physical Education Consultant, will present on the new Wisconsin Physical Education Standards.
Come Wednesday night and start the convention off by joining us for the All Convention Social, 8:00-10:00. Stick around for something new on Friday and finish the convention with the TOY Extravaganza!
Board of Directors Election
Several positions on the Board of Directors are up for election this year – President-Elect, Secretary, and the five District Coordinator positions. Thank you to the individuals running for these positions and volunteering their time to serve on the Board of Directors and provide guidance to WHPE. A paper ballot for the election will be available in the Fall Newsletter and electronic voting will be available in October. Please cast your vote in this year’s election.
Health.Moves.Minds./Game-On
As you begin thinking about the new school year, could you use some additional funds? Have you given thought to doing some fund raising? WHPE can help through Health.Moves.Minds or Game-On. WHPE Treasurer Katie Mulloy, katie.mulloy@nbexcellence.org, would be happy to answer questions you have and help you sort through the process of organizing fund raising for your school. You can also attend fund raising sessions at the WHPE Convention in October to learn more about Health.Moves.Minds. and Game-On.
125th Anniversary
WHPE will be celebrating its 125th Anniversary in 2022. An ad hoc committee has been formed, it will be receiving its charge soon, and will then begin planning and coordinating our celebration. When the calendar turns over to 2022, start looking for more information about WHPE’s 125th Anniversary.
Retired - Paid for Life Membership
WHPE now offers a Paid for Life membership for retired individuals. If you are retired and have been paying your membership year-by-year, you may be interested in getting a Retired - Paid for Life membership for $100.00. This option is now available on WHPE membership forms. http://whpe.us/benefits-of-membership
WHPE Clothing
In the past, members could purchase clothing with the WHPE logo by going to the organization’s web site. A link was available taking members to a vendor’s online store. Unfortunately, the arrangement with the previous vendor is no longer in effect. The Board is checking into establishing a relationship with a new vendor. You will be notified when WHPE clothing can again be purchased.
Although it is summer, Board of Directors members are continuing to post on Facebook. Check Facebook for the latest posts and feel free to “Like.”
