School News
Wow, August just flew by. As we move into September please be aware that our students go outside, unless it is raining or the temperature is not safe for us to do so. I am excited to say that we have been very successful learning our expectations here at school. Being Helpful, Safe and Kind. We talk about what this looks like throughout the day and how each student can be helpful, safe and kind by their own actions. We have also had some great learning experiences throughout the classrooms. Don't forget we have Open-House (no childcare available) on September 5th and Curriculum Night (open to all family members) on September 12th.

Arrival and Dismissal
Car Riders
Please remember the following information for car seat safety.
- Use the right seat for your child’s weight and height
Use a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rated car seat. Select a car seat based on your child’s weight, height, and positioning needs. Children under age 2 must be properly secured in a rear-facing car seat. Children under age 8, weighing less than 40 pounds, must be secured in an approved child safety seat. Children taller or heavier than the recommended limits for forward-facing car seats need booster seats placed in the rear seat secured with seat belts. - You are required to use a child safety seat
The parent or legal guardian of a child under age 8 must provide a child safety seat to anyone who transports his or her child. Children with physical disabilities that prevent the use of standard child safety seats are exempt from the law if the disability has been certified by a physician. - Put children in a safe spot
The safest place for children of any age to ride is the rear seat of a vehicle. Each child and each safety seat require a separate seat belt. Truck beds are not a safe place for children to ride. - Make sure seats are installed correctly
Consult with a car seat technician if you have questions about installation or rules about your child safety seat. To find a technician in your area, go to https://cert.safekids.org/get-car-seat-checked - Never leave children alone in a vehicle
In just a few minutes left alone in a car, children can be in danger from heat and dehydration, even if the windows are partly open. A child can wriggle out of a seat, hit the controls, and cause the car to move.

Reading
Reading to your child everyday means you are exposing them to more words. Students who are never read to are exposed to about 5,000 words by the time they are 5 years old. Students who are read to 1-2 times a week are exposed to 63,500 words and students who are read to everyday are exposed to almost 300,000 words by the time they are five.
We know it can be difficult for families to find time to get to your local library, so we are excited to share that we will be implementing book bags this year. These book bags will come home once a week with your child providing them with different books to look at and read through and then return them to get new books the next week.
Birth-3 program
“Parenting is hard work… let us be your partner”
Did you know District 300 has a free Birth- 3 parent support program available to qualified families living within district boundaries?
Our program uses the Parents As Teachers Curriculum to provide families who are pregnant or parenting a child under the age of 3 with fun activities, parent education, resources, and support in the comfort of your home or in our early childhood classroom. In addition enrolled participants receive access to playgroups, a monthly literacy night (free books!!), and parent education events that include the whole family.
Babies don’t come with a manual so if you are looking for a little extra support and would like to know more about how to qualify you can call 224-484-2331 or email us at Sonja.russell@d300.org. We would love to partner with you!
