Featured Story: Early Easter Planning
Egg-mazing Events & Selfless Students
🐰 In partnership with the Saint Clair Shores Fire Department, Lake Shore Public Schools' National Honor Society from Lake Shore High School and National Junior Honor Society from Kennedy Middle School filled eggs in preparation for the annual Easter Egg Hunt held on Saturday, April 19th at Blossom Heath Park. The event begins at noon.
Fire Lt. Scott Campbell reached out to Lake Shore for assistance in filling these eggs and 87 Shorians (49 from LSHS, 38 from KMS) were eager to help. Campbell brought with him Firefighters Cosette Wojciechowski, Andrew Somes, and Joshua Belfry.
Eighth graders Isaac Castle and Mason Merten were so egg-cited to help because the task was a cool idea and therapeutic for them. They chose to stuff $3 in an egg just for the fun of it.
Senior Teressa Leahy gained service hours. She said, "I had a good time putting the eggs together for the second year. I love putting smiles on kids' faces. It is fun for us and equally as enjoyable for them."
Children of all ages can bring their baskets to fill with eggs while parents cheer them on. Then, visit our special guest, the Easter Bunny, for a great family picture!
This fun-filled event is sponsored by the SCS Firefighters Union, Local 1744, in cooperation with the city Parks & Recreation Department. You won’t want to miss this hopping event!
Thank you, Shorian Nation, for packing 15,000 eggs with delicious treats for the anticipated 450 expert egg collectors to enjoy! We also appreciate the Fire Department's pizza delivery for all student-helpers.

Campbell wrote, “The enthusiasm and effort of your student scholars is exceptional, and is a direct byproduct of the leadership example set for them by their coordinators. Finding a group of students that are not only willing, but enjoy, serving the community is a unicorn of rarity. I am grateful to you for setting our event up for success and bringing out the very best in public outreach programs for this union. Shorian pride is to be commended and we at SCSFD are so very proud to have such exceptional partners in service."
And that's not all, yolks!

Care Solace
March is Self-Harm Awareness Month. If a student has been hurting themselves on purpose, the real hurt is inside. Self-harm is used to cope in the moment but can end up becoming a dangerous cycle. Here are some signs that your student is vulnerable and may be self-injuring:
- Symptoms of depression, anxiety, or stress
- Visible cuts, scratches, or unexplained wounds
- Covering their bodies with bandages, long sleeves, or long pants
If your student needs intervention and support for self-harm and its root causes, contact Care Solace. Care Solace will navigate the mental health care system, explain options, and quickly find available providers in our local community. Care Solace is a complimentary and confidential care coordination service provided by Lake Shore Public Schools.
- Call 888-515-0595. Multilingual support is available 24/7/365.
- Visit caresolace.com/lsps and either search on your own OR click “Book Appointment” for assistance by video chat, email, or phone.

People with the character strength of love of learning master new topics on their own or in school.
Are you smarter than a Kindergartener?
Six-year-old Wesley Rosol, a Kindergartener in Mrs. Sheats class at Violet Elementary, is as impressive as they come.
His eyes light up at the scent of a new book or the feeling of cracking open a well-worn spine, as each book is an invitation into a new experience, a different perspective, or an adventure of the mind.
His favorite series is Ghostbusters and his favorite subject in school is Science. Why Science rather than Reading? Wesley chimed, "Science comes with many instructions and I love to read them." He went on to describe a recent Mr. Beast assignment where there were multiple steps to follow.
Mom and Dad are incredibly proud of their son and they deserve credit for reading to him throughout the years and supplying him with an insane amount of books. Mom Erin Labeau shared, "I noticed Wesley caught on to words quickly. He seemed easy for him." Human brains are naturally wired to speak; they are not naturally wired to read and write. Children typically learn to read at about age 5 or 6 and need several years to master the skill. But Wesley is different.
"Even his personality is so different. Our family is goofy and it has rubbed off on him. He understands jokes, pretends he's in movies, is imaginative, and of course, smart."
Wesley has a rich imagination, a thirst for knowledge, and an open heart, always eager to learn, explore, and reflect. And his smile served as our cup of coffee for the great day ahead.

People with the character strength of perspective appreciate that people see things in different ways. They have the ability to understand view.
About a month ago, as the new semester began, Mrs. Fergusson introduced her Environmental Science class at Lake Shore High School to a thought-provoking lesson by reading The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. The book, which highlights environmental concerns, tells the story of the Lorax, a character who "speaks for the trees" and challenges the Once-ler, a business mogul who causes environmental destruction.
The central message of The Lorax is simple yet powerful, especially through the Lorax’s famous words: "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."
Mrs. Fergusson encouraged students to think critically by providing space for them to decide for themselves whether the Once-ler was truly good or bad. As the story is told from a third-person perspective, Mrs. Fergusson offered insights into the roles of the Lorax, who seeks to protect the environment, and the Once-ler, who exploits it. She asked the class, "Why did Dr. Seuss write this book in 1971?" Her students eagerly shared their thoughts, many focusing on how the book inspires change and how they could contribute to making that happen.
Eleventh grader Abigail Hatfield expressed her passion for the environment, saying, "My Aunt Crystal has a way with plants, gives them to me, and grows them as a hobby. She sparked my interest, and as an avid recycler, I want to increase my pro-environmental behaviors."
The course description emphasizes a deep dive into environmental concepts such as biomes, ecosystems, cycles, and succession, as well as discussions on population dynamics, human impact on the environment, and activism. A key focus will be on local environmental issues, specifically the Great Lakes, Lake St. Clair, and Southeast Michigan.
Ultimately, the lesson is clear: caring for the environment is essential for our well-being, and it’s something we can all contribute to.

We’re incredibly fortunate to have Lori Farr, our Special Education Director, as part of the Lake Shore Public Schools team. She truly makes a difference and spreads kindness wherever she goes.
Mrs. Farr began her role as Director of Special Education for Lake Shore Public Schools in 2019. With nineteen years of experience teaching in the moderate cognitive impaired classroom at Lake Shore High School, followed by nine years as a Teacher Consultant, she has developed a strong skill set to support both special and general education staff and students. She is deeply grateful to Marty Kliebert for the invaluable mentorship throughout her career.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 LSPS?
I love working at LSPS because it truly feels like home. The administrators are incredibly supportive and consistently prioritize student success, creating an environment where both staff and students can thrive. My colleagues work tirelessly, showing unwavering dedication to supporting our students and each other. The families in our community are equally amazing. It’s a special place where everyone works together to make a real difference.

One thing I wish people knew about the work I do as a special education director is how much collaboration, compassion, and advocacy it involves. It’s not just about managing programs and compliance—it's about creating an inclusive environment where every student feels valued and supported. Behind the scenes, I work closely with teachers, families, and specialists to ensure each student's unique needs are met. Every decision is made with a focus on helping students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. It’s challenging but incredibly rewarding to see the impact on students’ lives.
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞?
My favorite free time activity is to spent time with my family...eating out, kayaking, museums, local attractions and playing LRC. I'm currently reading The Anxious Generation, which explores how our world has become one of constant connectivity.

Looking forward, we are excited to celebrate Humor (3/31-4/4) and Fairness (4/7-4/11).

OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at school students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
Anyone can report tips on criminal activities or potential harm directed at students, school employees, or schools. Tips can be submitted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
While continually evolving and reviewed annually, on this Safety and Security webpage you will find a list of recent and current safety measures implemented by Lake Shore Public Schools to provide the safest environment for our students and staff.
Inspiration
Reading + Wellness = Joy
Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.
Strong reading skills are a critical component of future success. The foundation we build in our elementary core reading instruction prepares students for success in college and career. Our district strives to assist all students with their development of essential reading skills through a process that builds independent readers and effective communicators.
Mrs. Bailey, Mrs. Seiberling, and Mrs. Gough took 30 ELA students from Kennedy Middle School to serve as guest readers for March is Reading Month at our elementary schools. In addition, they stopped at American House to color and craft with residents. Reading + Wellness = Joy!
Ron Geletzker, age 77, enjoyed coloring bookmarks and interacting with the students. He exclaimed, "It was my favorite part and they should all get As!"
Middle schooler Olivia Buncaj said, "It was so nice to meet [resident] Fern. I gave her my bookmark to remember our day together."
Seventh grader Harrison Vonitter enjoyed reading to his brother Tommy, a Kindergartener at Violet Elementary.
Mrs. Tharme’s AP and Honors classes from Lake Shore High School went to the DIA and the John K. King Book store downtown. Michael Keenan said, "It was a wonderful experience to enjoy the art and have the opportunity to buy rare books! I haven't visited the DIA since 4th grade and I'm really into Roman & Greek stuff so it was interesting."
Gavin Hickey, Lucas Huffman, Francis Ramirez, and Gabrielle Rushing from her Creative Writing class successfully submitted poetry entries as part of the Michigan Council of Teachers of English Creative Writing Workshop; They will soon have their work published in the MCTE’s annual Creative Writing Book!
Mrs. Sheats' Kindergarten class has adopted a cow named Oreo from Crandall Dairy Farms in Battle Creek, Michigan. Students take turns bringing Oreo home over the weekend and document their adventures together inside a cow-patterned notebook! There are several calves in the Adopt a Cow Program & getting monthly updates on Oreo is so exciting! They love reading each others' writing and looking through the pictures.
Lake Shore Public Schools focuses attention on creating a learning environment that keeps students engaged in the classroom. With a variety of different subjects and courses, students will never cease to have unique courses that captivate them in the classroom. From our youngest students to the oldest, students have found constant engaging material presented to them during classes. Our educators strive to offer students the best academic experience possible and have a profound influence on students' lives.
Author Visits
In honor of National Reading Month, Michigan resident and illustrator Amy Nielander made an author visit to our 3rd-5th grade classes and author-illustrator team Karen Bell-Brege and Darrin Brege visited our K-2 grade classes at Masonic Heights, Rodgers, and Violet.
The Drawing Workshop developed a creative practice so they can connect in a fun way, regularly. The workshop was process-based, making it easy for all ages and drawing levels to participate.
The one-hour workshop was made up of three segments: Learn, Innovate and Connect. Students built communication skills, practiced resilience and stretched their creativity!
Amy grew up with many pets, a big family and lots of musical adventures. She loves creating big-hearted characters and playful stories for kids that incorporate themes of community, family or friendships.
Karen Bell-Brege is an author, comic, voice-over artist and public speaker. Her husband, Darrin is the illustrator of their books. As a husband/wife team they collaborate on numerous projects, and they love to make people laugh. They have a very creative son they adore, and they happily live, love, and laugh in the mitten.
Their presentation was a mix of reading, writing and art, and their books while including comedy improv and voice impersonations that guaranteed everyone was laughing, learning, and having a wonderful time.
To learn more, visit https://www.amynielander.com/ and https://karenanddarrin.com/.
We appreciate Mrs. Kraus, Elementary Media Librarian, for arranging these special visits on behalf of the district!
Innovation
One Book, One School
We are enthusiastic about books and how our elementary schools will begin reading the same book, The Chocolate Touch by Patrick Skene Catling. In this zany twist on the legend of King Midas and his golden touch, a boy acquires a magical gift that turns everything his lips touch into chocolate!
The One Book, One School initiative has been coordinated by Mrs. Husek at Violet Elementary since 2017; This year Mrs. Bruce will be leading the way. Joining her leadership is Mrs. Peacock at Masonic Heights and Ms. Bologna and Mrs. Semack at Rodgers.
At their kickoff chocolate-themed assemblies, Masonic Heights Elementary Principal Mr. Barranca and Rodgers Elementary Principal Mrs. Winiarski shared reading goals, filling students with excitement. They also invited special guest Jasen Magic to reveal the book title as part of his blended magic, comedy, and improv show.
Smiles and laughter from our elementary friends filled the rooms as Jasen mesmerized his audience with disappearing water, the secret to counting jellybeans, and cheesy jokes! It was awesome!
Every family in grades K-5 received one copy of the book with a coordinated reading schedule which is to be completed at home with families. There will be questions and conversations. There will be fun trivia games, a prize drawing at the end of the month, and other themed events!
Follow along with our March is Reading Month calendars to review the elementary schedules:

Bonus: Jet's Pizza has graciously offered to partner with us for their Bookmark Reading Rewards Program. We've coordinated with Jet's & received a generous supply of bookmarks with freebies! Thank you LSHS Class of 2018 graduate and General Manager Vernon Mathews for your partnership.
Double Bonus: The Lake Shore Foundation's generous grant donation to our elementary media centers allowed a special shelf to be filled with books that deal with social-emotional issues for students and teachers to enjoy!
Be Our Guest
Motivational and guest speakers in schools expose students to real world experiences from people who are in unique career fields or life circumstances, and are the link students make between what they learn in the textbook and information shared from an expert.
Read alouds promotes listening skills and encourages imagination.
The 3rd graders at Violet Elementary had a memorable Monday morning with a visit from Senator Hertel! He read a story to the class and took a few moments to explain his role in a fun and relatable way.
Senator Hertel's wrote from his social media account, "It was great getting to share a story with them and chat about my work in the legislature. From asking about what the hardest part of my job is to pitching a bill about birthday celebrations — they were full of great questions and ideas."
LSHS Class of 2018 Tom Kettler assisted Senator Hertel at this event. He currently works as a District Aid as part of State Senate District 12. His mom Linda Kettler is employed as a Remedial Specialist at Violet Elementary. Once a Shorian, Always a Shorian.
Teachers Arianna Amateis and Courtney Dmochowski surprised their sons Leo and Robbie at the Lake Shore Early Childhood Center by reading a story to their Preschool 3 class. Rodgers Elementary Principal Mrs. Winiarski also made time to share a story with her daughter Kailey's class at the LSECC. John LaRocca stopped by both Mrs. LaRocca class at Rodgers and the LSECC to read with his son Enzo and fellow classmates. These were very special visits for the Amateis, Dmochowski, LaRocca, and Winiarski families!
When the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) compared the reading skills of 210,000 students from thirty-two different countries, it found the highest scores (regardless of income level) among children who were read to by their teachers (and guests) daily and who read the most pages for pleasure daily.
Three hundred years ago, a mixed blood (called Metis’) scout disappeared into the wilderness to explore and trade. He found his way to the Great Lakes, where the Ojibwa People of the region took him in. He was given a name and became part of their tribe.
Genot Picor visited our 3rd graders at Rodgers Elementary to spark further learning from their Social Studies unit about the Native Americans and the fur trade and to share the stories, songs, and dances of the places he explored, from the Great Lakes, to the Ohio, Mississippi, St. Lawrence, and Mohawk Valleys. Genot Picor Presents “Stories, Songs and Dances of the Metis’ Voyageur.”
Brooks Richards from Mrs. Pillars’ class had the opportunity to dress like a voyager in the wintertime. His entire class looked through rocks, animal tracks and skins, and other artifacts. Richards commented, "I liked when I got to wear the coat and all the clothes. We got to speak French and we got to look at fur from animals. We played a fun game it was hard, you had to swing the circle and get the circle on the pole."
Genot Picor (formerly Piqueur) is a storyteller, musician and dancer. In addition, he is a published free-lance journalist, retired public school teacher consultant and grant writer. Picor holds a Master’s Degree in Theatre Arts/ Interpretive/Performance Studies from Eastern Michigan University, specializing in oral tradition, narrative studies and the anthropology of performance. Genot uses all his talents to bring an interactive frontier history alive to audiences of all ages.

AJM Packaging, Anytime Fitness SCS, Automation Workz Institute, Bakes and Kropp, Bossfab, Carpet Guys Training Center, Community Choice Credit Union, Douglas J Aveda, Detroit Carpenters Apprenticeship School, Detroit Training Center, Dorsey College, IBEW LOCAL 17, IBEW LOCAL 58, Macomb Community College, Michigan College of Beauty, Paul Mitchell The School Michigan, Pipefitters Local 636, Plumbers Local 98, Red Baron Enterprises, Shelby Construction Services, St. Clair Shores DPW, St. Clair Shores Fire Dept., St. Clair Shores Police Dept., St. Clair Shores Public Library, Trinity Millwork, US Army, UTI, Vulcan Construction.

Junior Dewarren SanAgustin has been a student in Mr. Winters' Construction Trades class since 9th grade. He enjoys working with his hands and activities that benefit the community. At the Expo, he learned more about the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights as well as his future options.
The Career Pathways Expo isn’t just about meeting professionals—it’s also about experiencing the careers up close! Many exhibitors offered live demonstrations, hands-on activities, and interactive experiences. The hard hat stress reliever toys, spin-the-wheel and receive branded swag, and pieces of candy were bonuses!
If you’re nearing graduation and unsure about your next step, this event was perfect for discovering career pathways that don’t require a four-year degree but still offer lucrative, fulfilling opportunities.
Celebration
Skylar named Runner-up in Best Cook in Macomb County
Congratulations to Skylar Lee, a Senior at Lake Shore High School who recently competed at Macomb Community College's 'Best Cook in Macomb County' competition for high school students. She earned 2nd place and a $500 scholarship to MCC! In 2024, she came in 3rd place and also earned $500. That's incredible!
Skylar made spicy maple chicken with panko breadcrumbs, green beans, and a sweet potato puree. That sounds delicious! She faults her slightly oversalted beans as the reason why she took runner-up this year. I doubt any of us would agree; She's so talented!
During the week and in preparation for this event, Skylar and additional Shorian student chefs, are stationed at the South Lake Bistro, wearing chef hats and working side-by-side with student chefs from Lakeview and South Lake to make a variety of dishes! She has been enrolled in this CTE Culinary class for the past 2 years.
Between classroom and kitchen instruction, Chef Downs and her students plan weekly menus, develop recipes, and learn all aspects of the food service industry. In the initial weeks, they discussed kitchen workflow, sourcing products for quality and price, and volunteer opportunities! Students can also earn their ServSafe Manager Certificate which verifies basic food safety knowledge and is for individuals in food manager employee-level positions. It comes with no surprise that she earned this certificate in November!
She continues to develop her craft and share this passion with the world with her participation in ProStart Invitational at Battle Creek. The statewide Michigan ProStart Competition brought together ProStart students and schools from across the state for two days of showcasing their talents in the hospitality industry.

March Madness
March Madness was epic!
Our loyal fans created posters, wore team colors, and shouted in support of their represented school during our March Madness Tournament on Tuesday, March 11th. The facial expressions, silly, Globetrotter-like moves, and constant laughter made this event a success! We appreciated the Michael Agnello Jewelers sponsorship, cheerleader performances, free throw competitions, George Munger and Elite Entertainment, and, of course, the staff and student athletes.
Lake Shore Foundation’s Chairman, Jack Dick, reminded everyone that this event was designed to bring the Lake Shore family together. The money raised helps students reach their goals of excellence by funding support for important educational activities not provided by the schools! Superintendent Dr. DiPonio recognized Mr. Dick's service to the Lake Shore community with a #ShorianPride belt.
Congratulations to the following Lake Shore Public Schools winner: Lake Shore High School
Happy Pi (3.14) Day
Happy Pi (3.14) Day! Shorians celebrated this infinite decimal in many ways, but we revisited this dynamic cookie lesson.
Mrs. Barnett and Mrs. Warren’s 6th graders at Kennedy Middle School completed a Pi Day Measuring Cookies activity. To begin, they measured their nilla, sugar, chocolate chip, monster, oatmeal, Oreos, and vanilla sandwich cookies using the centimeter side of their ruler, measuring to the nearest millimeter. Then, students measured the circumstance and diameter of the cookies, recording their measurements as a ratio on their Cookie Monster worksheets!
Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) because the date represents the first three digits of the mathematical constant pi (π), 3.14. Pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, and it's an irrational number, meaning it has infinite decimal places without repeating.
What's your favorite kind of pi(e) — apple, cherry, or the infinite kind?
Congratulation Rini, Blue Lake Scholarship Winner
Congratulations to Junior Rini Zelenak for winning the Emily Tims Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp Scholarship.
In her application, she wrote, "I would love to have this opportunity because I plan on going into Music Education and helping people through music. As a person who has struggled with mental health in the past I want to go into Music Education to show the younger generations that music can heal. I want people to make a difference through the things I’m passionate about and that is music."

Athletics
Athletics Website
We have built an online home for our athletic department. Our goal is to bring our athletic programs to life by sharing schedules, scores, and social media while ensuring our athletes get the promotion they deserve. Visit the Shorian Sports website for 24/7/365 access to the information you have always wanted and follow along with our sports action.
We have partnered with Kroger to help fund our athletics. Please read this letter from our Athletic Coordinator Rich Bowers.
We have finished uploading Spring 2025 schedules and rosters for Baseball, Boys' Golf, Girls' Soccer, Softball, and Track and Field. We took LSHS Athlete Headshots and have already began carefully place them on the website; It is so fun to see every player proud to wear Lake Shore attire. Team pictures from Stewart Fine Portraits will also be posted as soon as they are uploaded.
We believe a balance of academics and athletics creates a well-rounded student. Students who participate in sports not only gain the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle, they also learn lessons about sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork, cooperation, respect, and knowing how to win and lose.
KMS Wrestling Season
The 2025 KMS wrestling season has come to a close. The team ended their season at the Van Dyke Invitational, where we had seven placers: Nicko Pliva (2nd place), Jackson Larose (3rd), Noah O’Malley (3rd), Montez Patterson (3rd), Jameson Morganroth (5th), Ariella Esquivel (4th), and Rylan Taylor (5th). Congratulations to all our wrestlers on a successful season.
Softball Camp
It’s never too early to start preparing for the next season. Success takes determination and effort. It’s not about how much you want it, but how hard you’re willing to work for it. Softball Coaches Carl Agosta and Will Puvalowski, alongside their assistant coaches and players, hosted the Lake Shore Winter Softball Camp, targeting 1st-8th graders. The camp focused on throwing, fielding, and hitting fundamentals, offering three hours of fun-filled activities and competitions to help improve skills.
Baseball Community Service
Huge shoutout to our senior baseball players for stepping up and helping set up the elementary school book fair! It’s always great to see our team making an impact on and off the field.
