Play Smart Heart Screenings – Joan Haugaard, Jake Howell, and Carol Bruce: Heart conditions are often undetectable in normal physicals, and in-depth testing can be pricey. But thanks to Joan, Jake, and Carol's collaboration with the Play Smart Youth Heart Screenings program, 1,398 Camas High School students have received free heart screenings! CHS is now ranked the #1 Play Smart School for all of Oregon and Washington and has the #4 and #5 top daily volume distinction for all Washington schools. Given that Play Smart has held 300+ events and screened 34,000+ students, this is a huge accomplishment. Thank you for bringing this life-saving service to our students, Joan, Jake, and Carol!

Camas Summer Book MoVAN – Jenn Scott: What happens when an educator who is passionate about literacy gets wheels AND books? The Camas Book MoVan! Jenn Scott, a CSD Instructional Facilitator, wanted a way to keep up kids’ reading skills over the summer, so she organized a book drive and fundraiser, worked with district teams to add shelving to a van (thank you, Laura Nowland, Miles Bergmann, and Zack Crane!), and coordinated volunteers on Book MoVan days, which took place at three elementary schools every Wednesday from June 26 to August 15. Kona Ice of Lacamas came along for the ride, and volunteer readers, including teachers and principals, gave great read-alouds. Some weeks included literacy-related art activities and math activities, too. Thanks for leading the way to literacy, Jenn! (To donate books, drop them by the district office any time.)

Roadway Improvements
Brady Road Project – Starting the week of September 16, the City of Camas will begin upgrading NW Brady Road between NW 16th Avenue and NW Pacific Rim Boulevard. When completed in the summer of 2020, there will be one lane heading in each direction, a center left-turn lane or raised median (depending on the area), bike lanes, sidewalks, landscaping, lighting, and other enhancements. Temporary lanes will be created, but delays are expected during construction; alternate routes are advised. See more details here.
Pacific Rim & Payne Intersection – A new traffic signal, sidewalks, and lighting are in the works for the corner of NW Pacific Rim Boulevard and SE Payne Road. The improvements – which are scheduled for completion by year's end – will ease travel and increase traffic safety in the area. Work is being performed by a Sharp contractor, inspected by the City of Camas, and will be partially reimbursed by CSD as part of the Sharp property purchase. Minor traffic delays are expected; please heed flaggers in the area.
