"Peer to Peer" at the Middle School
In middle school, students were given the opportunity to join the club "Peer to Peer." This club, founded by Grand Valley State University is designed and rooted in evidence-based practices, offering a win-win for all students involved. It provides a reliable framework for building meaningful connections and friendships, ensuring that peer partnerships are thoughtfully and intentionally integrated throughout the school day in both academic and non-academic settings.
This club is run by Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Thompson and students attend during their Viking time every month. The club is focused on teaching students, with and without disabilities, skills to be helpful friends to all students throughout the school building. Students are learning about differences and Neurodiversity. Students are also learning about different tools for communication, for example, picture exchange communication systems and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices. These lessons are taught through books, videos, and class discussions. The students are also given opportunities to practice these skills in activities such as game days.
Unified Bowling at the Haslett Middle School
The Haslett School District has a variety of cultures, ethnicities, and abilities. Haslett students are learning the value of inclusion through Special Olympics Unified sports and have formed Unified teams at the middle school and high school level. A Unified team consists of students with a variety of ability levels and education backgrounds. All Unified teams compete against other Unified teams in the area and state wide.
Haslett Middle School and Haslett High School offer Unified sports during the fall, winter, and spring. Each special education athlete is paired with a general education partner at the start of each season to build their athletic skills together. Students practice together in their Unified P.E. class and after school throughout the school year. Athletes and partners follow the participation model, where students work together and practice along side of one another. On our Unified team, we are truly seen as one.
During the fall, our students compete in Unified Bowling. They competed in a local tournament hosted by Area 8 Special Olympics at Royal Scot in October and the state level tournament hosted by Special Olympics Michigan in November. Besides the area and state tournaments, our middle school athletes and partners had some friendly competition at Pins and Pints in a HMS staff vs student competition. More memories were made than points scored!
By participating in Unified sports, naturally, our students grow socially and build friendships along the way. Unified sports fostered these relationships into lifelong friendships that flourish outside of the school setting. Through the years, students have continued to nourish these friendships with birthday parties, pickup basketball, and virtual play with video games. While playing sports together on a Unified team was the goal, our Haslett hearts are filled with joy to see the everlasting friendships form.
