BLACKHAWKS BULLETIN
Week of February 2nd
Plainfield girls enjoy time with KUA athletes on Girls & Women in Sports Day!
PRINCIPAL PONDERINGS
Good Morning,
Getting this out earlier than usual because I wanted to remind everyone about today's PTA Winter Carnival from 12 to 2 at the school. Please see the PTA update below for detailed information. There's a crockpot cookoff (they welcome all entries!) and we've asked the town to clear the parking lot early and often. It will be the perfect opportunity to enjoy the fresh powder and get some activity in before the Super Bowl!
A huge thank you to all of our volunteers for your support throughout FAST. We would love everyone's feedback while thoughts are still fresh. Overall, we were pleased with the timing with the quality of the lessons, terrain, and logistical operations at Whaleback. Next year, we are considering some tweaks to make sure non-skiing students are able to spend a full four weeks doing their chosen activity. Please complete the FAST Survey below to weigh in!
I also want to thank Colleen Norgang, Kim Davies, Alexis Liston, and so many others at KUA for welcoming Plainfield girls to the Girls & Women in Sports Day festivities last Wednesday. I've included some of the photos from the event...pure joy!
And thank you to the Class of 2025 parents and students for hosting a very festive Valentine's Dance on Friday. The kids had such a great time and we couldn't do this without all of the support from parents. This class has been such a pleasure to work with. It is impressive to see how they've come together for activities, community service, and fundraising over the last few years. Please be sure to mark your calendars for District and Town Meetings (Saturday, March 15 from 9 to 4ish) where you can support their very last fundraiser. They will be providing concessions throughout the day.
Finally, none of the above is possible without our dynamic duo of Katie and Amanda in the front office. Please take a moment next time you see or talk with them to share a word of thanks for all they do behind the scenes to make sure it all gets done!
It's the week before break with lots going on. Please read all updates carefully. Here are a few highlights:
- NWEA Testing Winds down this week. 98% of students have completed ELA and 91% have completed math. You can see preliminary growth stats (from fall to winter) in my monthly School Board report (attached.)
- Make sure to check out the Spirit Week themes for this week - We changed the 100th Day (K to 4) from Tuesday to Wednesday due to last week's snow day :).
Best,
Audra

OFFICE NOTES
Important Reminders from the Plainfield School Office
We are seeing a variety of issues with hot lunch. Here’s what you as a parent can do help make sure we have accurate ordering information each day.
- Have conversations with your children about their plan for the day for lunch, so they are prepared to order hot lunch if this is their plan. The menu is online, and posted in our weekly Blackhawks Bulletin.
- We are seeing some students eating their lunches at snack time, and not having enough at lunch. They then go and get hot lunch. Please make sure your child knows your expectations and has plenty of snacks and lunch.
- If your student is arriving late, but needs a hot lunch (or other item) please put this information right in PickUp Patrol. Example: “Suzie is arriving late due to an appointment. She would like a ham sandwich for lunch”.
- We are working with our middle schoolers to remember to do their lunch survey in Alma. Please remind your middle school students to do their survey if they are getting hot lunch (they are reminded by us too, but some are still forgetting and then showing up for a hot lunch.)
- Lunches are made daily in Cornish. The Abbey Group brings what has been ordered. Students cannot change their mind after ordering lunch in the morning. Please remind your students to stick to what they order. We have menus in the classrooms, and in the office.
Pickup Patrol Reminders
Please remember to use Pickup Patrol for absences, late arrivals, leave and return, or changing their after-school plan. In the last few weeks, we’ve gotten a lot of office emails, and voicemail messages for absences. We ask that all of these changes be entered into the Pickup Patrol portal. If you need help with your account, please see Amanda in office.
Substitute Teachers Needed for 2024-2025 school year
The Plainfield School is seeking individuals who would be comfortable working with K-8th grade students in our building during the 2023-2024 school year. Applicants must be able to follow teacher substitute plans, be dependable, and enjoy working with children. If you are interested in applying, please contact Katie Lowery in the office at (603) 469-3250.
LOST & FOUND
2024-2025 Lost and Found…please take a look at our lost and found site and see if your children are missing anything. We already have some clothing hanging up. Please take a look and if anything looks familiar to your family, have your child stop and take it home.

CHARACTER STRONG - FEBRUARY
HONESTY
During February, we will be talking about the character trait of Honesty, what it means and why it is important! We define Honesty as “being truthful in what you say and do”. Learning happens best when it is done both at school and at home. Here are some books that you can read at home:
A Bad Case of Stripes Written by David Shannon
Being Frank Written by Donna W. Earnhardt
The Right Word: Roget and His Thesaurus Written by Jen Bryant
Check out the infographic below and find more ways you can help your child learn about the theme of Honesty!

FROM THE NURSE
Making Our Campus Safer
Several students have noticed a large yellow box mounted on the wall next to the front door of the school. This box is a locked and heated cabinet for our AED which used to have to come indoors for the winter months. Cold weather not only depletes the batteries but it also degrades the gel in the defibrillation pads and renders the machine useless. With the heated cabinet it can stay outdoors and remain in a warm and ready state. A second cabinet is on order and, when it arrives, it will be mounted on the outside wall by the back middle school doors.
If you need an AED in an emergency, call 911 and they will direct you to the nearest AED and provide you with the code to access the machine.
NOROVIRUS
Norovirus is a highly contagious stomach bug that can spread easily in schools.
Wash hands: Wash hands with soap and warm water often. Hand sanitizer does not kill the norovirus!
Restrict sharing: Limit sharing of food, utensils, and cups.
Clean frequently touched surfaces: Use an approved disinfectant on surfaces like door handles, tables, and counters.
Students and staff should stay home for 48 hours after symptoms have subsided.
In health,
Beth
