Superintendent Report | watch
Dr. Kaczkowski presented an “Understanding the Facts” presentation. She shared information about space (including options for expanding space in the district), impacts on students and learning during the pandemic, planning and preparation for next school year, and summer programming.
Dr. Kaczkowski reiterated that the goal for the next school year is to be:
All day
Every day
All children
It is not "if” we will be fully open next year, the question is “how.” Dr. Kaczkowski shared that the district will be administering a survey focused on options to determine how the community would prefer the district fully reopen next year.
Board members asked questions and engaged in conversation about our current school models. The Board also came to consensus about having a Community Listening Session focused on planning for next school year.
Medical expert Ed Campbell joined the Board meeting to share information about a project opportunity with Lurie Children’s Hospital and Northwestern University. They are doing strain analysis and studying how it impacts transmission. It would be a way for families to participate in a study that would further analyze saliva samples of those who tested positive. This study could identify new variants of the virus present in the community.

Abatement Process
Assistant Superintendent for Finance, Facilities and Operations Eric DePorter presented information about the abatement process. He also talked about the impact of the pandemic on the state budget and the uncertainty about how much public school districts will receive. Board members asked questions and engaged in conversation about evidence based funding, planned future projects, past abatement in the district, equity, and pandemic expenses. They discussed if the Board should consider abatement at this time, but they did not come to consensus to move forward.
