What is PRIVATE?
Why it's important not to share too much online
Elementary Edition
What kinds of things should we not tell a stranger?
It is important for you to keep certain information about yourself, like your address and phone number, private from strangers. The word "private" means something that you should keep to yourself.
Private information is connected to a specific person. For example, no two people in your class at school have the same full name, address, or phone number.
Some examples of private information is ...
- Picture
- Full name
- Age
- Birth date
- Address
- Phone number
- Email address (or your parents' email address)
- Passwords
- Where you go to school
- Parents' full names
- Parents' credit card or bank numbers
Why do you think it's important to keep this information private?
How is sharing private information online the same as telling it to a stranger in person?
When you share information online, you don't have any control over who sees that information. It can be viewed by all sorts of strangers!
Let's play "Thumbs Up!" and "Thumbs Down!"
For each example given, think about if it is OK to share (thumbs up) or if it is something private that you shouldn't share (thumbs down) with a stranger or online.
Then complete the reflection questions at the end.
