Superintendent's Community Update

Dear Newport Schools Parents, Families, and Staff:

We are just two days away from the start of our holiday vacation! I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a wonderful holiday and a Happy New Year filled with joy, family and friends, and great memories. Remember…Friday is our last day of school before the break. Let’s all make an extra effort to be at school on time and wrap up this calendar year.

As I have said several times this month, the greatest gift we can give our kids is the gift of education. You can help give that gift to your child by making sure they are in school, because Attendance Matters, Every Day! I know it can be tempting to tack on an extra day or two to bookend holiday vacation. I am asking everyone to not do this and set an example for our children that being in school every day matters. Research very clearly shows that missing even a few days of school can lead to learning loss that’s difficult to make up.

So let’s keep going and improve on our attendance. Let’s maximize the gift of learning by making sure our students are in class every day until this Friday, December 22nd and ready to return to class on Tuesday, January 2, 2024. And if you as a family or as a goal for your child need a New Year’s resolution for 2024, perfect attendance for the remainder of the school year is a great one!

Of course learning doesn’t have to stop while we’re on holiday break. I highly recommend that all of our families take advantage of our wonderful Newport Public Library. More than just great books, the library has amazing kids and teens programs, a Maker Lab, and discounted and free passes to the Breakers, Roger Williams Zoo, and the Norman Bird Sanctuary.

Just last Saturday, our Pell Pre-K students and their families took a trip to the library and had a great time! We are so lucky to have such an amazing, free resource available to our kids, families, and community.

Speaking of books, if you’re looking for a last minute holiday gift idea, books make wonderful presents.📚 I think this quote captures the power of giving a book as a gift very well:

"Books make great gifts because they have whole worlds inside of them. And it's much cheaper to buy somebody a book than it is to buy them the whole world!" – Neil Gaiman

Note that there will be no Superintendent's Message next week. We’ll be back with our next edition the first week of January.

Estimados padres, familias y personal de las escuelas de Newport:

¡Estamos a sólo dos días del inicio de nuestras vacaciones! Quiero aprovechar esta oportunidad para desearles a todos unas maravillosas vacaciones y un Feliz Año Nuevo lleno de alegría, familia y amigos, y grandes recuerdos.

Como he dicho varias veces este mes, el mayor regalo que podemos darles a nuestros hijos es el regalo de la educación. Usted puede ayudar a darle ese regalo a su hijo asegurándose de que esté en la escuela, ¡porque la asistencia importa todos los días! Sé que puede resultar tentador añadir uno o dos días más para completar las vacaciones. Pero eso significa que su hijo(a) no estará en la escuela recibiendo las importantes lecciones que nuestros maestros han planeado para él (ella). Las investigaciones muestran muy claramente que faltar incluso unos pocos días a la escuela puede provocar una pérdida de aprendizaje que es difícil de compensar.

Así que maximicemos el regalo del aprendizaje asegurándonos de que nuestros estudiantes estén en clase todos los días hasta que comiencen las vacaciones al cierre de clases este viernes 22 de diciembre y regresen a clase el martes 2 de enero de 2024. Y si está buscando una resolución de Año Nuevo para 2024, ¡la asistencia perfecta durante el resto del año escolar es excelente!

Por supuesto, el aprendizaje no tiene por qué detenerse mientras estamos de vacaciones. Recomiendo encarecidamente que todas nuestras familias aprovechen nuestra maravillosa Biblioteca Pública de Newport. Más que solo excelentes libros, la biblioteca cuenta con increíbles programas para niños y adolescentes, Maker Lab y pases gratuitos y con descuento para Breakers, el Zoológico Roger Williams y el Norman Bird Sanctuary.

¡El sábado pasado, nuestros estudiantes de Pell Pre-K y sus familias fueron a la biblioteca y se lo pasaron genial! Somos muy afortunados de tener un recurso tan increíble y gratuito disponible para nuestros niños, familias y comunidad.

Hablando de libros, si estás buscando una idea de último momento para un regalo navideño, los libros son regalos maravillosos. Creo que esta cita capta muy bien el poder de regalar un libro:

El Comité Escolar de Newport y el Ayuntamiento de Newport celebrarán un taller conjunto el miércoles 3 de enero de 2024 para escuchar una presentación sobre los datos de los estudiantes de 2023. Attention Rogers and NACTC juniors: Would you like to explore your career interests, build professional skills and get paid $15/ hour? The PrepareRI Internship Application is live and open to high school juniors for summer 2024!

The PrepareRI High School Internship Program is a rigorous 7-week work-based learning experience where current Rhode Island public high school juniors are placed in a paid summer internship during the summer of 2023. We are looking for high school students who are highly motivated to learn and want to explore the world of work. Students selected into the program will make $15.00/hour, and can earn up to $4,200 for the summer.
