The Pulse of the Pride

September 20, 2024
Lyme School Friends,
We have had a great two weeks and we all have been spoiled with the beautiful weather!
After hosting the NH Primary for the community and parent/guardian information night last week, this week we had our school picture day and middle school hike. Our students continue to be in good spirits and the feeling in the building is that we have had a strong and successful start to the school year! Just this morning, we had our all school meeting with several important student and staff announcements as well as some fun together! These meetings are the highlight of the week for me.
Please don't forget to log-in to ALMA and complete your registration for this year. This is required for all returning families.
As we move to the conclusion of September, we know the weather will start to get cooler. Please remember that students will start to need layers for the morning. Although we are nowhere near ready for snow, a light jacket or sweatshirt will definitely be useful for the coming cooler weather.
The week of September 30th will be an exciting week for our school. We will have our Artist in Residence program happening and more information is below. We will also have our Open House on October 3rd, so you will get to see our student work and see the artist-in-residence at Open House.
Have a fantastic weekend! Thanks for reading!
Regards,
John P. D'Entremont, Principal

We enjoyed hearing what your kids thought of the new lunch program, and we have had a lot of encouraging feedback so far. If you would like to contact me regarding the school lunch program, please feel free to send me an email at ddindo@lymeschool.org. Everyone has been so welcoming and has made the beginning of our first school year here a great experience!

Open House is an opportunity to visit the school with your students. Your students will show you their spaces and tour you around the building. You will also get an opportunity to say hello to teachers. We look forward to seeing you there!
We do these events at different time slots because we know that it is hard for families to get to school. It is our hope that families can make at least one by staggering the times a bit.
Snap Photos?
We do collect photos for our newsletter as well as the yearbook. If you have a photo from a school event such as the first day of school, please feel free to send to aperry@lymeschool.org or jdentremont@lymeschool.org. We have a place to store these electronically for those that work on these important celebrations! Thank You!
Four Winds Volunteers Needed
Hello Lyme School families,
Four Winds is a Nature education program that provides training and materials to teach five hands-on science lessons to K-4 students at the Lyme School. Volunteers teach lessons in pairs, and the teacher is always in the room to provide support. In the past we have examined skulls, dissected owl pellets, caught frogs in a local pond, and discovered macroinvertebrates in Grant Brook. If any of these activities spark your curiosity and enthusiasm, we would love to have you on board!
As a current and past volunteer, I would be happy to answer any questions you have about the program. Trish Gautreau, 3rd grade teacher, has been involved in the past and is also a good resource. If you are interested in signing up or attending the first session to see what it is all about, please email me at aflower80@gmail.com.
Our first training will be 9-11 on Monday, September 23rd.
Thanks!
Adrienne Flower (mom of 3rd and 6th grade Lyme students)

Artist in Residence Update
Artist in Residence Update by Ms. G.
In JUST TWO WEEKS…. Our Artist will be in RESIDENCE!
I want to take a moment to introduce Jay Ryan and his work:
Jay Ryan is a screenprinter and illustrator who lives near Chicago and has been making concert posters and other prints since 1995. He's worked for hundreds of bands and is known for his hand-drawn typography, concerned mammals and gravitationally challenged furniture. Jay makes his own work at his printshop, called The Bird Machine. The best parts of his posters have been collected in three volumes, published by Akashic Books. Jay also paints murals and travels the country to lecture and work with students at universities and high schools. Jay lives in Evanston, Illinois with his wife, childrens' book illustrator Diana Sudyka, and their eighth-grade daughter. They spend a lot of time on bikes and in the woods.
We will kick off Monday morning (9/30) and work throughout the week.
With much appreciation to all who make these opportunities possible,
Ms. G

Design Lab Update: Bridge Building Team Challenges
Overview: Our design lab has been buzzing with creativity as students tackle different bridge-building challenges Using materials like sticks, marshmallows, wooden blocks, and the innovative Da Vinci bridge design, teams have been experimenting with various techniques and structures.
Materials Used:
- Sticks and Marshmallows: These materials have encouraged students to think about tension and compression while allowing for quick prototyping.
- Wooden Blocks: Used for stability, these blocks have helped in creating more solid foundations and have tested the limits of load-bearing capabilities.
- Da Vinci Bridge Design: Inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s self-supporting bridge, this design has provided a unique approach to structural integrity, with students exploring its effectiveness and adaptability.
Progress Highlights:
- Creativity in Design: Teams have come up with innovative bridge designs, emphasizing aesthetics and functionality. Some have even incorporated decorative elements!
- Testing Phase: Students have begun testing their bridges for strength and stability. Preliminary results show that bridges utilizing the Da Vinci design have performed exceptionally well under load.
- Collaboration: The collaborative environment has fostered teamwork, with students sharing ideas and strategies, learning from both successes and failures.
Conclusion:
The bridge-building challenges have been fun and effective learning experiences to start the school year, highlighting the principles of engineering and teamwork. We’re off to a great start this year in the Design Lab!

Riding the Bus
Our priority each day is to transport all bus riders safely to and from school. In order to do this, we need student and caregivers’ cooperation. Your student’s behavior while entering, riding, and leaving the bus contributes in many ways to safe transportation. Such conduct makes it possible for the driver to give full attention to the roadway and other drivers.
Please take a few minutes to review with your child the information below concerning student conduct on the bus. Your student’s cooperation in following all rules is appreciated.
Expectations
1. Obey the bus driver by following directions the first time they are given.
2. Wait in a safe place for the bus.
3. Wait for the driver’s hand signal, then look both ways before crossing the roadway to board the bus. Please remind your student that the red flashing lights cannot stop oncoming vehicles.
4. When boarding the bus, go directly to your seat without disturbing others.
5. Sit and stay in your seat until you reach your destination.
6. Keep hands, feet, and other objects to yourself.
7. Food, drink, and candy (including gum) are not permitted on the bus.
8. Keep all items in your backpack, including electronics and phones.
9. Talking should be quiet and school-appropriate.
10. Respect bus property, including keeping the bus clean.
Please remind your student that riding the bus is a privilege.
PE News by Mrs. Damren
Third graders spent their class time working as a group, moving through various fitness activities that were given to them as a list. These activities included running around the baseball field, hanging on the monkey bars, jump roping, bench dips, and abdominal work.
Each group was led by a “ task manager “, something that is introduced in grade three. This person ensures that the group is on task, follows directions, does what is expected, is respectful to their group members, and sets the tone and pace for the group. Task managers rotate and each student is given the opportunity to serve in this role. This is a big responsibility and one that allows students to take a leadership role.
Third grade rocked this and they did an outstanding job, even through the heat!! Nice work, third grade!
Team Tournament Play Elective News
A championship has been crowned in the team tournament play elective. After many rounds of play, a series of ties that needed to be broken, and a solid semi final round, a championship game ensured that lasted through regulation play, overtime, and sudden death with, the red team earning a hard fought win in soccer.
This elective brings a competitive element of play, where teams have to work really hard to advance. The entire group of 24 students plays hard and works until the very end. This makes for a series of fantastic games.
Congratulations team red!
