Message to families
Mariner Family,
I love our school do you love our school!
Parents, we kick off this school year, we would like to celebrate you/us and our opening of the 2024-25 school year and our first full week of school. We would also like to celebrate the accomplishment of every K-8 classroom circling up this week to build community, relationships and provide such an awesome beginning. I would like to emphasize the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment where every student feels valued and connected. One powerful tool we have at our disposal is the use of community circles on a daily basis, throughout the year.
Starting each day with a circle allows us to build strong relationships between students and teachers, and among classmates. It’s a time to foster trust, share stories, and set the tone for the day. By encouraging students to express themselves and listen to one another, we nurture self-confidence and self-efficacy—qualities that are vital for their growth both inside and outside the classroom.
As we close each day, we encourage end-of-day circles. This end-of-day reflection gives everyone the opportunity to acknowledge their accomplishments, no matter how small, and ensures that each student leaves school with a sense of pride, accomplishment and fulfillment.
We intentionally make our classrooms places where every student feels seen, heard, and supported. Through these daily practices, we can create a community where learning thrives and relationships flourish.
Parents, thank you for your dedication and commitment to your child’s success. Together, we can make a lasting impact! Ask your student how the circle works and let them show the family how it works. It would be a great school to home connection and your child would feel so empowered to serve as a teacher as she/he teaches the family how the circle operates.
Let’s celebrate our awesome opening and continue to treat each other, each parent, each staff member and each student, with caring, kindness, and patience, especially in the parking areas each day. And let’s keep the momentum going Mariner Family! Let’s continue to build a culture of we, us, together!
Sincerely,
Your dedicated admin team - Assistant Principal, Mrs. Barry, Assistant Principal, Mr. Castro, and Principal, Mr. Candelaria
Inside our ship
Inside Look at the awesome PESD Teacher Community and PESD Phys Ed PD: Our PESD PE Teachers spent a week creating a culture of alignment with our PESD 2024-25 year goals! Collectively, they have 106 years of P.E. expertise! Our group is awesome and because of their hard work, the group was able to:
Create our Physical Education mission statement
Align Math and ELA standards with the PE Standards and skills they teach
Create a culture of sharing best practices, lessons and more!
Create a shared drive with resources including inclement weather and sub lessons
Learn about incorporating PBL and STEAM in the PE Classroom
Share goal sheets and discuss the connection to Student-Led Conferencing
ART STEAM Teacher and Academic Coach Professional Development: PESD Art Teachers and Academic Coaches also spent a week at Rob Reiner and we will share more about that awesome experience soon.
Back to School Night: Thank you elementary and middle school Mariners for an two nights of glorious back to school engagement. It was a great evening of relationship building between staff, students, and parents. Way to go Mariner Family!
Parent Volunteers: This is a friendly reminder to all parents to stop by our front office and ask about the parent volunteer process.
Safety and parking lot areas: Thursday and Friday were perfect days in our parking areas. We saw parents demonstrating care and kindness with each other. Please continue to show patience in the parking areas each day. The school gate opens at 3:30 and we get 900 students out and into their cars and the parking area is clear by 3:45 each day. We have 180 days of school and most days are filled with caring and kindness and patience within our school parking lot. Please take your time, be patient and kind to each other in front of the children, and drive with a caring attitude, always looking out for kids and parents along the way. Thank you
Herencia Mariachi Program: Our mariachi program will begin on Thursday, August 5th. Detailed information will go out this week for all who have signed up. We still have room for trumpet players and bass guitar players. See Mr. Candelaria if you would like to join. Students in 2nd grade - 8th grade are eligible. First come first served.
AVID Insider
Welcome to the 24-25 school year!!! We are all super excited for this year to begin. AVID supplies have been handed out to all the classrooms. Students should bring their supplies everyday so they are ready to learn.
The acronym GROW is posted in all of our classrooms to remind our students of the expectation of AVID students. GROW will help the students to represent themselves well in all their classes, both verbally and non-verbally.
G-Get ready to learn
R-Review what you learned
O-Open your mind
W- Wonder and Ask
Review the GROW acronym with your child. Talk about what each letter stands for and what that norm, behavior, or mindset represents.
