APPLY TO PRESENT AT OUR CONFERENCE!

We are now accepting requests to present at our conference at Lebanon High School on Saturday, March 12, 2022, from 11-3 pm. Sessions can be 45-50 minutes, although we will also have one breakout full of "lightning sessions" that can be multiple 10-15 presentations in one time slot. Those selected for a full session will receive free registration. Our ultimate goal is to include ideas that will engage, entertain, and educate, with games, music, and prizes included! This application form includes more details; feel free to contact Susie Highley if you have any questions or suggestions.


As far as safety protocols, we will be following what Lebanon Schools have in place at that time. More registration details will be available in our next newsletter! Mark your calendars for March 12!

Dealing with Social Media and Other Sites

This article did a lot to help me understand some of the ways that students are bullying and "stirring things up" at school. (It should not be behind a paywall.) For example, there may be Instagram accounts with your school's name and 'tea'. Students add posts to instigate things and they erase them soon after so it looks like no posts have been made; it may be one reason some students keep checking their phones. I found several such accounts from some of my former schools.

For Real Conversations, Get Kids Talking

This brand new article from MiddleWeb includes video examples and step-by-step instructions used to encourage all students to participate in discussions. It includes this chart on "Habits of Discourse" used by both middle and high school in that district.

Indiana Teachers Can Get Free Access to the Extra Yard for Teachers Summit

The Extra Yard for Teachers Summit is in conjunction with the College Football Playoff Championship game. In-person registration is closed, but Indiana teachers can get free access (costs $39 for others) to the live virtual version of this event on Saturday. You do need to log in through the Indiana Learning Lab (create an account if needed) to register. You will have access to all of the sessions through April 30. Speakers run the gamut from the Secretary of Education, Miguel Cardona, to a former Bachelorette!? More details here.

Indiana University Armstrong Teacher Educator Awards

From the IU Armstrong website:

"We bring some of Indiana’s best educators to Bloomington to work with future teachers. The Armstrong Teacher Educator Award is more than a “teacher of the year” award. In addition to recognizing educator excellence, the award provides financial support for top Indiana educators to work with current IU faculty and undergraduates in the classroom and early field experiences."

Teachers must first be nominated, and then the application can be completed.

The application can be found here, and is due January 30, 2022.

NCTM Comes to Indianapolis in March

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) will hold the NCTM 2022 Regional Conference & Exposition at the Indianapolis Convention Center from March 16 - 18, 2022. The program theme of “Refresh, Reflect, and Reconnect” will provide a great opportunity for P-12 mathematics teachers to connect with one another, exchange ideas, and learn from some of the most influential mathematics educators in the country. The registration site is now open, and early bird registration rates will be available through January 19. The Indiana Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) is excited to serve as the host affiliate for this event! ICTM members who register for the NCTM Regional Conference will get ICTM membership for free for 2022. For more information and to register, please see https://www.nctm.org/indy2022/.
As you plan ahead for the rest of the month, consider the many lesson ideas from Learning to Give. Every year they update resources, literature ideas, and service projects for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and other events. Suitable for January or the beginning of the school year, they also have an activity called "Setting Intentions" that is similar to the idea of making resolutions. The idea behind "Teach One" is that you can accomplish things in one period or day. There is a calendar with suggestions for each month. There are still many service-learning ideas found on the IASP/IMLEA websites from the INSPIRE program.
