COACHES CORNER
ELA INSTRUCTIONAL COACH JENKINS!
Sixth grade is reading and learning about the 3,700-year history of chocolate and its importance in different cultures. They will practice research skills by reading primary sources, finding reliable information, and learning how to use it properly. As they go along, students will write essays to argue their favorite type of chocolate and whether it should be in school lunches. At the end of the unit, they’ll put everything together in a final project. If you haven't already, ask your scholar what they have learned so far!
Seventh grade is reading the classic African American play "A Raisin in the Sun" by Lorraine Hansberry. They are learning about the racial and personal struggles of the Youngers and what choices they make to survive and thrive in a world that was not made for them. Students are acting out the play. In addition, students are building on their prior skills of argument writing by writing short and longer essays arguing specific points in the play. Please take time to discuss this wonderful play with your child!
Eighth grade is reading the graphic novel, "Gris Grimly's Frankenstein", based on Mary Shelley's classic, "Frankenstein". So far, students have used playdough to create their own "creatures" and have learned how the main character, Victor Frankenstein, created and is treating his creation. As students continue to read and discuss they are continuing to build their argumentative writing skills by arguing if the creature in the story is human. Students really enjoy this piece, so please make sure you ask them about it!
December 9th is when students will begin taking the test covering the current unit. If your student is currently struggling in Language & Literature, please make sure they come to tutorial on Wednesdays from 4:30-5:45. There is an activity bus students can take home if you are unable to pick them up.
7TH GRADE NEWS!
Scholars can complete STMath and IReady Math assignments for further guidance with content when no homework is assigned.
