"Where it's always a great day to be a Bison!"
A Note from Ms. Marlatt
Dear Bison Families,
Welcome to October! September sure was eventful, and October promises even more fun. Thank you to so many families for joining us Saturday night at Harkins to watch The Wild Robot. It was so special to see so many families come and get so many hugs!
During the month of October, we give you an opportunity to participate in our Parent Climate Survey. My door is always open to any parent, but this is your chance to have an anonymous impact in what goes on in our school. Not only this survey gives you an opportunity to voice how you feel, it also impacts our School Performance Dashboard. We get points based on number of responses and also positive responses. So I am asking you to please take a few minutes and click on the link below (or use the QR Code) and participate in the fall survey. I thank you in advance.
This edition of the BisoNews is packed with lots of information. Please read on and let's get ready for all the fun October will bring!
Thank you for sharing your children with us!

Outdoor Classroom/Amphitheater Update
Our Outdoor Classroom is complete! We are waiting a bit more for the new sod to take root, and then we are planning on a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Many thanks to:
- PTO for financing the classroom.
- Our families who donated funds.
- The Whipple family - Matthew Whipple donated all architectural services for this project.
Next time you come by, stop and take a look. The Outdoor Classroom looks amazing and we can't wait to be able to use it soon!
Halloween Classroom Parties and Parade
Halloween will soon be here and so will classroom parties. All are welcomed, but you must pre-register before the party day. Here is what you need to do:
- Bring your ID to the office anytime between now and October 30th.
- Our front office will print a badge and keep it organized until October 31st.
- We will have all pre-printed badges available on the day of the parties. Tables will be available for you to pick up your badge.
- NO BADGES WILL BE PRINTED ON THE DAY OF THE PARTIES. YOU MUST HAVE YOUR BADGE PRE-PRINTED BEFORE OCTOBER 31ST. Last day to print badges is October 30th by 3:45pm.
- Your classroom teacher will be sending you reminders about this.
- We do this to make sure all students, families and staff are safe at all times.
- If you are a PTO member or volunteer and you have a preprinted badge already in the office, you do not have to have another one printed.
On Time, Everyday!
Working on Tardies
Attendance is not only about avoiding absences. It is also about being to school on time. Arriving on time is a habit that helps everyone. You know what happens to you at your job when you arrive late too many times... Unfortunately we are seeing an increase in tardies, specially on Tuesday morning. We can't stress enough how important it is to be here on time. The time is 7:45am. What can you do as a family in order to create routines that get you here at 7:45am everyday? Take this on as a challenge and let's see the tardy line decrease in size!
This Week at Second Creek
Every week Second Creek staff submits pictures and videos of cool things happening in their classrooms . Below is this week's version.
A Note from the Health Office
Greetings Families,
As the weather begins to change, we are approaching illness season and wanted to share with you some friendly reminders about the district's illness policy and ways to stay healthy during the cold weather months.
- Encourage healthy eating and sleep habits to keep your body and immune system working well! HealthyChildren.org has many resources for parents regarding sleep and nutrition for children of all ages.
- Drink plenty of water and avoid sugary beverages.
- Practice frequent hand washing with your students. Here is a link to a great resource from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
- Stay home and keep your students home when ill. 27J uses How Sick is Too Sick to determine illness exclusion for staff and students.
- Get your annual flu and COVID-19 vaccines and ensure your student's routine vaccines are up to date.
Feel free to reach out to our health assistant, Celina, or district nurse, Erin, if you have any questions! We would love to help connect you with resources to keep your students healthy and ready to learn every day.
Sincerely,
Celina Hernandez - Second Creek Health Assistant
Erin Bluth, BSN, RN - Children's Hospital Colorado, 27J District Nurse

Traffic Reminders
If you are a returning family to Second Creek, you know our parking lot is small and needs special care during morning drop off and afternoon pick up. Thank you for contributing to the overall safety of our staff and students!
If you are a new family to Second Creek, please read the information below carefully. Staff and sometimes Commerce City police are out during morning drop off and afternoon dismissal to make sure everyone is safe.
Parents, it is very important that we do not park on the bus lane before or after school. Blocking the bus causes delays that go beyond our school.
Here are a few reminders about our drop off and pick up procedures. You know that Commerce City police pops in once in a while and issue tickets to vehicles that are not following our safety rules... so please make sure you are doing what you can do keep our students and staff safe!
- No parked cars in the "no parking zone" - which is by the sidewalk from the beginning of the parking lot all the way to the front doors. This is a fire lane and also a bus lane. There is NO PARKING anytime. Only drop off or pick up. We have noticed many cars parked waiting for the school to open in the morning, blocking the bus and causing lines of cars that go all the way outside the parking lot. Please drop off your student and go - no parking.
- Same rules apply for pick up after school.
- All students can be dropped off at 7:30am. We do not have supervision for students who are dropped off before these times.
- Students must be picked up at 3:30pm every day. We do not have staff to supervise students after school.
- Let us know if you need information about our before and after-school program.
- Please only use the handicap parking if you have a handicap license.
- The Staff of the Month parking is for staff only at all times.
We appreciate your cooperation!
A shout out to our sponsors!
