Roo Nation
It is a Great Day to be a Roo!
Week of March 31st
Greetings, Roo Nation.
I hope you and your family had a wonderful Easter. There are two weeks left in the fifth six weeks. Since April 5th and 8th are student holidays, that leaves only eight school days until the end of the grading period.
This week is Assistant Principal Appreciation Week, and I am grateful for the dedication from our Admin Team. The role of the assistant principal may be the most challenging and equally important position in a public high school. We are blessed to have a team that supports both staff and students and excels at making positive connections with all stakeholders.
This week's Student POV spotlights Trey Nelson, who provides some great insights into his experience in Weatherford. For instance, Trey mentions "The most valuable thing that you can find in high school is yourself, and finding your interests can set up your entire future." He is the youngest son of Alycia and Nick Nelson; siblings Blake and Sydney are graduates of Weatherford High School. Interesting sidenotes of Trey's family - his father has completed multiple 100-mile ultramarathons and his grandfather, Glade, has been a valuable addition to our Roo Staff.
You likely have heard the media building anticipation for the Solar Eclipse on April 8th. The WHS Science Honor Society and Science Department has been planning for a fun, educational gathering, which will include safe solar eclipse glasses, an interactive science fair in the WHS Cafeteria, and food trucks.
Have a great week and Go Roos!
Bill Tommaney, Ph.D.
Weatherford High School Principal

Student POV - Senior, Trey Nelson
• What advice do you have for an incoming 9th or 10th grader?
My advice for any incoming 9th or 10th graders is to challenge yourself. High school is a time to learn your interests and to grow, take every class that sounds interesting, regardless of a label like AP or Dual Credit. The most valuable thing that you can find in high school is yourself, and finding your interests can set up your entire future.
• What does Roo Nation mean to you?
I’ve been a part of Roo Nation since 3rd grade, and it has provided me with opportunities and memories that I’ll always be grateful for. The outstanding teachers have helped me come to both love and seek learning. The classes that were offered to me have set up my transition into college, and for anyone who thinks that school doesn’t pay, you’re wrong.
• How are you involved at school?
I’ve been a part of the drumline, marching band, and indoor drumline for four years, and this year I’ve had the honor of being drum captain. I'm the Treasurer of National Honors Society and the Vice President of Science National Honors Society. I’m also involved with the UIL Academics Current Events, Social Studies, and Science team.
• Who or what is your biggest inspiration?
My biggest inspiration is my dad. My dad is an ultra-marathon runner, and the dedication that accompanies a 100-mile race constantly leaves me in awe. My dad is always smiling and talking to anyone that he gets the privilege to meet, and tries his hardest in everything he does, whether it be his work or personal relationships. He is everything that I want to be when I’m older.
• What has been your favorite memory while at WHS?
My favorite memories while at WHS have got to be football games, pep rallies, and UIL band competitions. Getting to drum with my friends in high energy environments such as the ones that I listed creates a feeling that I’ll likely spend the rest of my life trying to chase.
• Any highlights this year?
One specific highlight from this year was when the drumline won the Springtown Standstill Contest and was awarded with best percussion in the Sound of Springtown Marching Contest. We set the goal early in the season, and getting rewarded for the countless hours of hard work that went into that show was a unique experience in marching band, and then winning outstanding percussion in the finals performance once again was only better. I’ve never screamed louder than when our name was announced at that moment.
• What are your plans after graduation?
My plans are to go on a two-year mission trip with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to Sweden to serve the people there. After the two years of labor, I plan to attend BYU Provo and to major in Political Science with a pre-Law emphasis, with an undecided potential second major in Scandinavian Studies in Swedish or mathematics.
• Favorite quote(s)?
“Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”
-Atticus Finch, To Kill a Mockingbird

WHS BBQ TEAM - what started out as a thought quickly became a reality when students were present with an opportunity to join the newly created WHS Rockin’ Roo BBQ Team. And even more proud of Braiden Grimet, Colbie Humphrey, Kaleb Heiermann and Kaidence Grimet for advancing to state.

The school counseling department wants to gain insight into how school counselors and staff are engaging families and caregivers of students as it relates to student advising and post-secondary opportunities. We have created the following survey to request feedback which will help us ensure we are meeting the needs of your students. Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey.
Please take a minute to review the student course requests for next year. This is your opportunity to submit changes for anything that you do not agree with or that may have been entered by mistake. If we do not receive any feedback, we will assume everything is good. Please fill out the form if a change is needed. The deadline is Thursday, March 28th.
Here is the step-by-step process to view the requests.
- Log into Student/Family Access.
- Navigate to the Schedule screen using the menu on the left-hand side of the screen.
- Click on the link on the top, right-hand side of the screen, “Request Courses for 2024-2025 in XX School.”
- The course requests can be viewed for the 2024-25 school year.
- There is also a link on the screen to view Alternate Course Requests.
Please use this link to submit any needed changes. Once the change is completed you will receive a confirmation from the counselor.
Spring Finals - Exemption Requirements
I would like to draw attention to a few items that will be good for parents and students to keep in mind as you plan your family's schedule. First, are the exemption reminders, outlined in the graphic shown below. Second, is the final exam schedule for all grade levels. Third, is next year's school calendar. I am aware of how eager folks can be to finish early or believe it is not necessary to attend school if they qualify for exemptions. Students are expected to attend until the last day of school, even when they are exempt. Senior exams finish early, and their separate exam schedule is included in the Senior Smore, dedicated to important senior activities.
Spring 2024 - Final Exam Schedule
May 16 & 17
May 20 & 21
May 22 & 23
Grades 9-11 continue their exams on May 22 and finish on May 23, the last day of school.
