Greenacres November Newsletter

From the Principals Desk
Yesterday's festivities were a great time here at GES. However, the most impactful part for me was our field trip to Cascadia (formerly Good Samaritan). Students were able to proudly show off their Halloween costumes to the residents in a parade style event. After talking with some of them during our trip, they noted that it was the highlight of their week. We know that both you and our community at large give a lot to this school. We are grateful when we have the opportunity to give back and encourage others.
On another note, here at Greenacres we have an important day we are observing next week. On Wednesday, November 6th we will be having our Veterans Day assembly/5th Grade Music Program. Even though it is a Washington State law to have a Veterans Day observance, we are honored to get "salute" our Veterans with a special program. Even though we are observing/honoring Veteran's day on Wednesday, the holiday does fall on Monday, November 11th where we will not have school. I want to leave you with some fun facts to share with your student about this special occasion.
- Originally Veterans Day was called Armistice Day to honor the end of World War I.
- In 1968, President Gerald Ford decided to change it to the 4th Monday in October beginning in 1971. However, it generated a lot of confusion and was switched back to November 11th in 1978.
- As of April 2021, there are still 19 million living American veterans that have served in at least one war.
Have a great weekend and thank you to our men and women who have served our country!
Warmly,
Brandon Dunn

5th Grade Music Program
Dear Parents,
I am so excited for our upcoming 5th grade music program. We have had the opportunity to discuss the importance of Veteran’s Day, why we celebrate, and what it means to a lot of people. Through this program we have been able to look at the evolution of music through our society and cultural. The students have done a really great job learning this ambitious program, and I am excited to share it with you.
Our program will be Wednesday, November 6, 2024. Students will have a practice for the rest of the school earlier that day. Students should plan to dress nice, and can wear an Americana/Patriotic theme if they choose. The doors to the school will open after 6:00pm, students will need to arrive in their classroom between 6:10-6:15pm, and then teachers will bring them down to the music room. Parents can go straight to the gym to get your seat. We will begin promptly at 6:30pm. The program will last approximately 30 minutes, and then students will be released back to their teacher and you can pick them up in the lunchroom area.
Thank you so much, I look forward to sharing this program with you and your family.
