Forest Lane Monday Memo
Monday, January 20th - Friday, January 24, 2025
Greetings from the Principal
Welcome to a chilly week on Forest Lane!
We have reached the midpoint of the school year! As mentioned last week, the first term of the 2024-2025 school year ended on Friday, January 17, and you can expect to see report cards sent home later this week. I want to highlight two procedural items in this edition of the Monday Memo as a mid-year reminder to help make the second half of the school year move as smoothly as possible.
We are fully within winter's grasp right now. "Wind Chill" and "Real Feel" are common phrases when watching or listening to a weather forecast. What our winter is lacking at this time is snow. One result of this lack of snow is that we might neglect putting on all winter gear when we leave the house. I just want to remind everyone that students are outside for recess before school and throughout the day if the "Real Feel" is five degrees or higher. It can get chilly at those temperatures, so continuing to send gloves, hats, boots, and winter coats is so important for our students. They may not see the need when the snow is off the ground, but they sure feel it when their hands, feet, and ears are experiencing the effects of the temperature outside.
A second reminder is about picking up and dropping off your students before/after school. Morning drop-off tends to go quite smoothly as there is a full 30-minute time frame (7:30-8:00am) where students are arriving and rarely are there drop-off backups. At the end of the day, picking-up students sometimes goes well, and sometimes creates situations where we have to think "How can the process be safer for our students?" Here are some tips:
1) If you are waiting for a 6th grade student, plan to arrive later than the 3:20pm dismissal time as the 6th graders are not dismissed from band/choir until 3:27pm (Wednesday is the exception as 6th grade has the same dismissal time as 4k-5th grades).
2) You may park and pick up your student, but please stay in the striped area connected to the crosswalk to help us encourage students to safely walk across the parking lot.
3) Please keep the pick-up line single file. We all wish the line went more quickly, and it is a long line, but we have had some situations where student safety hasn't been as comfortable as it could be.
4) With the colder weather, we have been keeping students inside and calling them down to the pick-up line. It has been more effective than in the past, but still takes time. Again, we are always looking to improve our efficiency with pick-up while maintaining student safety.
We are looking forward to a great second half of the school year on Forest Lane, and we hope you are, too!
Have a great week,
Mr. Stelter

Message from Nurse Jess
Parents/Guardians,
Last week we had the pleasure of Laci Monroe (a FoodWise Nutrition Coordinator) coming to visit our 4K, 3rd, and 4th grade classes. Over the next 5 weeks, these grades will go on a journey learning about healthy food to nourish their growing bodies (and they may even get to sample a few new things!). Our FLCS students love having guest presenters come in to educate them!
