Get your student Reading
The third annual Districtwide Reading Challenge (aka “the Level Up Reading Challenge) kicked off on January 10th between KISD high schools. Each high school uses a reading app to record the amount of minutes our students spend reading during the week. All reading is good reading in this challenge, so students are allowed to count novels, nonfiction material, class readings, and other reading that they may do outside of the school day. Students and staff are challenged to read 4,000 individual minutes by March 28. Shoemaker is off to a head start right out of the gate. At the end of week 2, Shoemaker is not only leading the pack, the district with over 16,000 collective minutes. WAY TO GO GREYWOLVES!!
We’ve still got a long way to go, so keep entering your minutes as you read, and for those who haven’t signed up yet, it’s not too late, look for the Beanstack app in Clever or download the Beanstack tracker app from your app store.

Important Reminders:
Tardy Policy:
Please encourage your student to arrive on time to their classes to avoid any disruptions. We’ve implemented a 30-second reminder before the tardy bell to help students get to class on time.Student IDs:
All students must have their ID visible at all times—worn around the neck, not on backpacks or around the waist. This is crucial for maintaining campus security.Early Release Students & Missed Bus to KCC/CTC:
Students with early release who choose to stay on campus must sign in and remain in the library. If your student misses the bus, they should notify the front office, and we will assist in resolving the situation. However, if the situation cannot be resolved, students must stay in the library until their next class on campus begins. Roaming the hallways is not permitted for safety reasons.Cell Phone and Electronic Devices Policy: Our new cell phone policy is now in effect. We're continuing with reminders on Tuesday and Wednesday, and starting Thursday, September 5th, we'll begin enforcing consequences for having electronic devices like cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, and headphones out during the school day from 8:00 AM to 4:15 PM.
- Important Information for Parents: Each secondary student will be assigned a personal, secure pouch for their cell phone at the start of the school year. Students are expected to bring this pouch to school daily and return it in good condition at the end of the year.
- We understand that some parents may choose not to provide their students with cell phones or may prefer that their students not bring electronic devices to school. If your student does bring a device, they must either surrender it to the appropriate assistant principal or request a secure pouch in line with Administrative Procedure VI-EE.

Capturing Kids Hearts Family Corner
CKH Focus of the Month is on Respect
This Month’s Focus: Respect
As part of our Capturing Kids' Hearts initiative, we’re focusing on responsibility At Shoemaker, we believe that working together—whether in the classroom, on the field, or in our community—makes us stronger. Thank you for being an integral part of our Grey Wolves family.
What is Responsibility?
Responsibility is the willingness and ability to take ownership of our thoughts, words, and actions. We have a responsibility to our school, family, and community to be accountable for our choices and how they impact ourselves and others.
Why focus on Responsibility?
- Responsibility teaches resilience. It is not possible to persevere and achieve our dreams without taking personal responsibility seriously.
- Responsibility empowers us to own our actions. There is great power in being able to make conscious, calculated choices to reach goals and manage those things in our control.
- Responsibility teaches us to manage our time and resources. Responsibly organizing and prioritizing needs is an executive function of the brain that improves with practice.
Responsibility in Action:
- Give students roles and responsibilities. When students have a leadership role in class, they are accountable for contributing positively to the classroom culture.
- Empower students with self-management tools. Provide students with tools to help manage stress and impulsivity while motivating them to meet goals.
- Clearly communicate consequences. Empower students to make choices and experience the consequences of their actions, both positive and negative.
Please read more about KISD's Cell Phone Free schools below
As we start this exciting school year, I want to remind you that Shoemaker High School is a cell phone-free campus from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. This includes smartwatches and earbuds, which must be put away during these hours.
Our goal is to minimize distractions and keep students focused on learning and engagement. Phones are available throughout the campus if students need to contact you, and in case of an emergency, we will notify families promptly.
We appreciate your support in reinforcing this policy at home. For questions or concerns, please reach out to the district at phonefreeschools@killeenisd.org.
Thank you for your partnership, and let's make this year the best one yet!
For Students with ID Cards and Cell Phone Pouches:
- Enter through Door #2.
- Open your pouch before entering.
- Power off your phone and place it inside the pouch.
- After passing through the Evolve system (metal detector), an AP or staff member will lock your pouch and return it to you.
- Proceed to the designated area (café or 1100 hallway) until the bell rings.
For Students without ID Cards or Pouches:
- Enter through Door #40.
- Walk through the Evolve system and log any ID or pouch violations at a computer.
- You will have one last chance to secure your phone in a pouch or turn it in before entering the hallways.
- If your phone is confiscated during the day, you will automatically move to Step 2 of the district's cell phone consequence policy.
- You will then be directed to your designated area (café or 1100 hallway).
Important Reminder: Treat Yondr pouches like ID cards. Students must bring them to school every day, even if they do not have a phone.
