AGPS Earns Diamond School Safety Rating!
Schools and Districts are putting in the hard work to “Place School Safety First” and are now being recognized for their efforts to meet requirements, trainings, drills, and best practices in school safety and security with the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) Badge Certification. NDE has established a badge system to recognize schools that go above and beyond to provide a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors.
The badge identifies and recognizes Nebraska public and non-public school districts meeting the highest standards of safety and security. Schools can earn Diamond, Gold, or Silver badges, highlighting their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors.
Effective learning can only take place in a safe environment, and this certification reassures communities that their schools are actively fulfilling the four pillars of safety: prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. Diamond certification means a district is meeting the highest standards in school safety and security, with gold being the next level, and then silver. By earning these badges, schools demonstrate their dedication to “Place School Safety First”.
School districts have built safety and threat assessment teams and are required to have an emergency operations plan, develop safety & security policies, complete safety drills, conduct suicide and other safety trainings, as well as having digital, substance use, dating violence, and countless other safety best practices to keep school communities and the members free from harms way.

Digital Wisdom Creates Better Student Outcomes
Mr. Jay Martin, NDE School Safety and Security Director, recently spoke to AGMS and AGHS students. His message about the issues on digital platforms, apps, and social media was well received by the student body. Mr. Martin was able to share real-world examples of many of the pitfalls often experienced by adolescents in the digital world.
If you would like to learn more about what you can do to assist your family in learning about the importance of Digital Culture, check out Mr. Martin's Parent Academy on Digital Culture.
Standard Response Protocol
Students learn and practice various routines and procedures both in their classrooms and as a school. This includes drills for safety. Ashland-Greenwood Public Schools wants to keep parents informed about our practices for keeping students safe at school. A big part of our plan includes the Standard Response Protocol (SRP). The SRP provides simple, yet specific actions and directives in the case of an incident or emergency. While we hope to never have to use these directives, we want to be prepared for any incident. Additional information is provided in the attached parent handout from the Standard Response Protocol Foundation.
Sheltering for Tornado Warnings: On the poster attached/below, you will see details for SHELTER. Staff and students shelter when there are hazards, often weather-related. In the event of a tornado watch, the school administration carefully monitors weather conditions. When the sirens go off and/or local emergency responders tell us to shelter, ALL staff and students will shelter in designated areas in the building. School buildings and shelter areas are a safe place for us to be in the event of a tornado. When we go into the shelter, no adults or students will leave the shelter area until we are notified the hazard has passed.
Thank you for reviewing our school safety procedures. The safety of our staff and students is very important.

From the Desk of Ms. Washburn, Middle School Counselor
The new start time of 8:07 at the Middle School has allowed for an added period for advisory. Each morning, students meet first with their advisory teacher for a short time before heading to their first exploratory class.
Research shows that it is important for each student to feel a sense of belonging in order to reach their full potential. Fostering this sense of belonging through relationship-building is one of the main goals of the advisory period. In addition to building relationships, there are several other goals that tie into advisory:
To provide each student with an advocate in the building
To advise on academic, social, emotional, and behavioral matters
To teach and build personal, social, and relational skills
To enhance digital citizenship and technology use
Our weekly schedule includes checking for missing assignments and failing grades that can be remediated, practicing a specific social skill (such as taking responsibility for oneself), and team-building activities. The hope is that this time will create friendships and bonds for years to come.
From the Desk of Mr. Richards, High School Counselor
Welcome to the 24-25 school year!!! Schedule changes were a busy part of the beginning of the year and now students are settling into their schedules. Would like to thank those students and families who came in July and before school started to adjust their schedules and enroll in dual credit classes with SCC...it really helps the start of the year!
This semester we have 158 dual credit enrollment courses that our students are enrolled in. This number seems to increase each year as last fall we had 150 course enrollments.
Applications to post-secondary institutions are being completed now and we would encourage seniors who have not started to begin applying to the college/university that they are considering to attend.
UN-Lincoln is waiving their application fee of $45 for undergraduate admissions by using the Code “HUSKER” when you are prompted for a fee waiver code, this will be good until November 1, 2024.
Would also encourage parents/students to visit EducationQuest for “free” information on financial aid, scholarships, college searches and a whole host of other information. https://educationquest.org/
