Principals Spotlight
Dear 2nd and 3rd grade families,
Welcome back to a new school year at Steeby Elementary! My name is Karri Bailey, and I am honored to introduce myself as the new Principal for our amazing staff and students. I look forward to learning and growing together.
As we partner together to make this year the best one yet, I look forward to establishing a strong sense of community between school and home that will support increased student success and consistency, expanding our positive school culture where respect, responsibility, and empathy create deep and lasting relationships, and ensuring equitable opportunities for both students and families to seek support throughout the school year and beyond.
For 17 years I have been a Wayland Wildcat, having been a teacher at the elementary and middle school level, an Assistant Principal at the middle school and high school, and am looking forward to leading this team as Principal at Steeby. My husband and I have raised our children here and believe wholeheartedly in the dedicated, passionate staff, rigorous academic programming, and the safe and welcoming environments here at Wayland Union Schools.
I look forward to working alongside you this upcoming school year, supporting our students in another successful academic year!
Yours in Education,
Karri Bailey, Principal

Back To School - Back To Routine
A Helpful Guide To Help You Navigate The School Day
At Steeby Elementary, we have policies and procedures in place for student safety and flow. Please read through the information below. Things do change from year to year and we want you to be prepared as we start this exciting new school year!
School Day Schedule
Our school day schedule runs from 8:45am to 3:45pm daily. The half day schedule runs from 8:45am to 11:45am. Students are expected to be in class by 8:45am each day.
Attendance
Students are expected to be in class by 8:45am each day. Students will be marked tardy if they arrive after this time. PLEASE NOTE: Students who arrive to school AFTER 9:00am are marked HALF DAY ABSENT.
Students are expected to complete the school day which ends are 3:45pm. If the need arises for a student to leave BEFORE 3:30pm, they will be marked HALF DAY ABSENT. Students who leave between 3:30pm and 3:45pm will be marked AFTERNOON TARDY.
If your student needs to miss school because of illness, or necessary appointment, please contact the office at (269) 792-2281. If you call outside of normal business hours there will be an option to leave a message. If we don't hear from you, your student will be marked unknown and you will receive a follow-up call from the school.
Pick Up & Drop Off Procedures
Morning drop off and afternoon pick up times are a very busy time. Safety and security are our number 1 priority. Please follow these guidelines for smooth transitions.
All students being dropped off in the morning or picked up at the end of the day must enter Steeby Elementary via E. Maple St. Traffic in the rear parking area follows a one way flow. Please do not let your student exit your vehicle until you reach the unloading zone in front of door #3. To ensure safety and expedite the process, please prepare your child to unload while in the loop. Please do not park in the loop or pull out of the loop as this creates a danger to our students and staff. See the map below for flow details.
We understand that schedules change and you student may need to be picked up early. All requests for end of day pick up must be made to the office NO LATER THAN 3:15pm. Requests made after this time may not be able to be accommodated.
IMPORTANT FORMS
ICHAT Volunteer Forms
Parents who wish to enter the school for any activities, volunteer opportunities, or field trips, must have an active ICHAT background check on file. ICHAT background checks are good for 1 year from submission date and cover schools in the entire district. That means if you have students in multiple buildings across the district, you only need to fill out ONE ICHAT form. ICHAT request forms can be filled out on our website, www.waylandunion.org. Click Parents/Students > Parent Quick Links > ICHAT Request Form, or simply click the button below to get started!
Elementary Handbook Changes 24/25
The Elementary Handbook Committee meets annually to ensure our handbook aligns with the needs of our student body. Here are some of the more important changes to make note of for the coming year:
Changing end of day routines:
When your child’s afternoon routine changes and needs to go someplace other than home, please contact the office via phone call if any end of the day procedures change. Calls to the school office must be received one hour prior to dismissal.
Student backpacks:
Student backpacks (Including: purses, fanny packs, etc) must fit in the student's locker and be stored in their locker throughout the school day.
Injury and Illness:
Students with a temperature of 100.4 and above need to remain at home and/or will be sent home. Students must be fever-free for twenty-four (24) hours prior to returning to school. It is recommended your child stay home until symptom free (vomiting, diarrhea) for 24 hours.
Truancy:
A student shall be considered a "habitual truant" when, in spite of warnings and/or their parent's efforts to ensure attendance, they have accumulated ten (10) unexcused absences per school year. Truancy begins at day eleven (11) of unexcused absences. Again, after ten (10) days of truancy in any grading period/trimester, a student will be considered an "habitual truant" which can result in:
assignment to an alternative placement with loss of participation in school activities and events;
a hearing before a judge in a court of law; and/or
a report to local authorities concerning lack of parental responsibility in providing proper care and supervision of a child.
When a student reaches their fifth (5) unexcused absence for the school year, a letter will be sent home informing parents/guardians of your student’s absenteeism with the expectation of
improving attendance. An additional letter will be sent to your household at the student’s 7th (seventh) unexcused absence for the school year.
Parents/guardians and the Allegan County Truancy Officer may be contacted after the 10th (tenth) unexcused absence for the school year in an effort to correct truancy issues or poor attendance patterns.
Dress Code:
Students are required to wear:
A shirt with solid fabric covering the front, back, and sides under the arms
Bottoms with solid fabric covering the buttocks and upper thigh.
Appropriate footwear with a solid bottom/sole.
Shirts/dresses that have straps over the shoulder and cover undergarments.
Shirts/tops must cover the entire rib cage.
Prohibited clothing and/or attire includes:
Clothing that exposes the chest.
Clothing that exposes undergarments.
Clothing that promotes or references tobacco, alcohol, or drugs (example: Cookies).
Clothing that depicts violence, hatred, racism, sexually suggestive messages, or is gang- related (example: Playboy).
Wearing of hoods on the head
Wearing of sunglasses
Blankets
Beginning on page 127 of the student handbook, a behavior matrix has been included that contains preventative behavior supports, definitions of different behavior incidences, as well as minor and major behaviors and consequences. Please review the entire handbook and reach out if you have any questions.
