A letter from Principal Baldwin
Good Afternoon Mav Nation,
I want to take a moment to reassure my Maverick students, staff and families that safety is my number 1 priority as your principal. It is disheartening but a harsh reality that we live in a world that we all have concerns about our loved ones returning home daily.
I want each of my students and staff members to feel safe when they enter MHS. I had the opportunity to speak with students, parents and staff members and want to provide some insight to help ease everyone's mind.
The lockdown drill conducted on Thursday, 9/26 was a scheduled drill. All schools in the state of Texas are required by law to conduct a variety of safety drills including a lockdown drill each semester. All safety drills were scheduled before school began and were placed on the MHS All staff calendar. All staff members have access to this calendar. It was brought to my attention that some staff members were unclear that we were having a drill, causing worry and concern in the classroom. I will make sure when the next drill occurs all staff members are on the same page to limit stress and anxiety among our students.
The parent letter that went out to families Thursday afternoon was in response to a Facebook post in a neighborhood group refencing a screenshot of a text telling students not to come to school on Friday as there would be a shooting 5th period. The purpose of the parent letter was to inform families that Campus Administration and Alvin ISD Police were aware of the social media post and that the claim was unfounded.
I write this letter to ask for your partnership in three areas:
1. If you or your student every have a concern about safety or receive news of a possible threat to our campus, please reach out to myself (via phone: 281-245-2232 or email) and Alvin ISD police (281-331-2320) immediately. I thank the parents, students and staff members that contacted me and our police on Thursday.
2. Please speak with your students about the importance of not making jokes about school threats and to be mindful of what they post on social media as they can have adverse affects. Verbal and written threats can result in criminal charges.
3. Please talk with your students to see if they are stressed or have concerns. Often times students bottle their feelings in and need to be able to express themselves in a safe environment to their parents. Talk with your sons and daughters as they need the guidance of older, wiser adults to understand how to process complex situations such as violence in schools. They can also speak with a counselor or administrator on campus.
Thank you for continued partnership as it truly takes a village to ensure the success of each of our Mavericks.
Sincerely,
Jamie Baldwin, Principal
