April 2025
April Showers Bring May Flowers! Thank goodness for rain!
Happy April! This newsletter is a little late because I wanted to wait to share that this week is National Assistant Principal Appreciation Week! Since Mrs. Garcia is a parent at NBES as well as a dedicated administrator, we wanted to be able to surprise her with some decorations announcing this special week to parents. Please join our school in thanking Mrs. Garcia for all she does this week (and every week!).
This week is National Librarian Week! Friday, April 4 was also National School Librarian Day. Let's give a big shout out to Ms. Angela Woehl for all she does for NBES!
Please make sure to scroll to the end of this newsletter to see the dates for upcoming field trips and end of the year events. Remember that you must a be Level 2 volunteer to attend field trips so don't wait until the last minute to complete this process. You can contact Mrs. Honeycutt in the main office should you need a link to the online application.
We have 40 days left in this school year. Please make sure that your child is at school EVERY DAY (if they are healthy). Students who arrive late and/or checked out early miss out on important things so please try to limit tardies and early check-outs. If you MUST check your child out early, please do so before 2 PM. While this is our established procedure everyday, it is important to share a reminder.
Some parents have shared concerns regarding other parents throwing cigarette butts out of car windows in the car rider line. Please do not litter on our campus! Thankfully we have had some rain now but fires are a real threat so please properly dispose of your trash. Please remember that all BCS campuses are Tobacco Free.
We have requested to turn on the Air Conditioning in the building later this week. Please dress your child in layers as each room's temperature can vary.
Thank you for all you do to support North Buncombe Elementary School! We are proud that our students are growing, learning and succeeding here at NBES!
Working Together,
Mrs. Heidi Allison
Celebrating Assistant Principal Appreciation Week!

Looking ahead to next year... Stay tuned!
Senate Bill DRS45299-NH-100A, School Calendar Flexibility: A New Alternative, sponsored by Senators Galey, Berger, and Lee, was filed on March 25. The bill would allow school districts to begin school no earlier than the Monday closest to August 19, so long as there are an equal number of days in the spring and fall semester, and the closing date for students is no later than the Friday immediately preceding the last Monday in May. If this passes, BCS may adopt a school calendar with an EARLIER start date!
NBES Dual Language Applications for the 2025 - 2026 school year are available!
Call now to schedule an appointment for Kindergarten Enrollment!

NBES Early Check-Out Procedure Reminders
Please review these procedures from the NBES Student Handbook
EARLY PICK-UP OF STUDENTS
When it is necessary for a student to be picked up before regular dismissal time (2:25), a note should be sent to the classroom teacher. The person who takes the student must sign him/her out on the computer in the office and be on the student’s pick-up list. A picture ID is required. If a student leaves before 11:30 AM he/she will be counted absent for the entire day. Students being picked up early should be signed out between 1:30 PM and 2:00 PM; otherwise, all students will be dismissed through our regular procedures with buses loading at 2:25 PM and car riders being dismissed at 2:30 PM. Early sign-outs interrupt classroom instruction and students miss valuable instruction time. No student may leave school grounds without permission from the Principal or Assistant Principal.
Please note that we can NOT check out students between 2:00 PM and 2:25 PM!
This is due to student & school safety. Thank you for understanding!

NBES Loves Volunteers!
NBES welcomes volunteers! There are many ways for individuals to volunteer at our school. All volunteers must fill out an online volunteer application and be on the approved volunteer list before volunteering.
Level 1 Volunteers - General volunteer - never supervising students
Level 2 Volunteers - Volunteer who supervises/gives directions to students or serves in a leadership role (such as PTO board). This level is required for any parent attending a field trip. This level requires a background check (conducted by Buncombe County Schools).
Parents may get a link to complete a volunteer application by calling the main office at (828) 645-6054 and Mrs. Honeycutt can help you with this process.
