Literacy Vision
All Barnstable Public School students deserve joyful and inclusive learning environments that pave the way to continuous learning, curiosity, change-making and meaningful engagement with the world around them. We aspire to create a learning community with students and educators engaging in challenging, authentic, adventurous, meaningful, and affirming experiences so that learning, independence, and achievement may flourish for all.
Learning in literacy will include speaking, listening, reading, reasoning, and writing that provides opportunities for students to
- engage with complex texts, about thought-provoking topics, which reflect their own experiences and those of others
- communicate effectively with others and think critically about their learning through speaking, listening, and various modes of writing
- strengthen foundational skills and build knowledge to support comprehension
- develop civic mindedness that prepares them to make meaningful contributions in their communities and beyond
- experience connections in the content and literacy instruction in various educational settings within a student’s day
Our goal is to create learning environments where educators and students achieve more than they imagined possible.
What is GLEAM?
Growing Literacy Equity Across Massachusetts (GLEAM) is a 2.5-year grant
(through the 24-25 SY) designed to support schools to implement components of
a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) for ELA/Literacy which have been
shown to promote equity of access and achievement for all students. TNTP consultants worked with our district to support all components of the GLEAM grant. We have completed our final year of the grant in grades K-5. The GLEAM grant has provided Barnstable Public Schools guidance to sustain the literacy growth moving forward and inform future curriculum review and implementation processes.

Celebrating Student Learning
Here are a few CKLA celebrations that were shared on the BPS social media.
History is Alive at BUES!
After diving into the American Revolution in their CKLA unit, students became historical figures themselves in a live wax museum! From George Washington to Betsy Ross, they researched, wrote biographies, dressed the part, and brought the past to life for their classmates.
First Grade Geologists in Action!
Our amazing first graders at Hyannis West wrapped up their CKLA History of the Earth unit by diving into Earth's wonders - learning all about landforms, rock layers, geysers, volcanoes, fossils, dinosaurs, and more. They're becoming experts in geology one discovery at a time!
Hyannis West hosts a Grand Royal Ball!
To wrap up their King and Queen unit, the Hyannis West kindergarten classes hosted a Grand Royal Ball! The day was filled with a royal parade, lively dancing, and the fun game "Pin the Crown" on the King and Queen. It was a magical celebration fit for royalty!
BWB Traveling Petting Zoo
BWB Kindergarten had a visit from Animal Affair Traveling Petting Zoo as a culminating activity for their farm unit from CKLA, science of reading literacy program!
Living in Colonial Times
BWB Kindergarteners experienced what it was like in Colonial times as they learned about it in their literacy unit!

Thank You Families!
We're wrapping up an important chapter with our GLEAM grant this summer, and we wanted to take a moment to thank you sincerely for your partnership!
Over the past two and a half years, your support has been invaluable as we've focused on enhancing literacy through our new CKLA curriculum and the Science of Reading. Your commitment to your child's learning, alongside our school's efforts, has been key to the progress we've seen in improving literacy for everyone.
Thank you for being such an important part of our school community!
Have a fantastic summer!
