Kia ora e te whanau
It was great to see more students returning to us today, having completed self-isolation or recovered from Covid, or simply feeling more confident to be back on the school grounds. Managing numbers onsite is difficult and unpredictable but we are pleased that so far we have been able to keep open for everyone and manage the teaching and learning both onsite and at home. In the event that we cannot maintain this, we will of course inform you as soon as we can via email and on Facebook and the Website explaining the alternative programme that will be put in place. In the meantime, please continue to support your student’s learning; encourage them to come to school and engage in their courses or support them to manage their online learning through Google Classroom at home. If you need any support in this - contact their whanau ako teacher or a Dean.
Last week as a staff we engaged in online learning through a presentation about the LGBTQAI + community in New Zealand, and indeed the world. Our presenter, Martin King, an ex-student of Trident, gave a lively and compelling argument for the need to understand the highly complex world of gender identity in the 21st century. As a school Trident’s second strategic priority is to be a Supportive and Inclusive Community - where all students and staff are supported to build confident connected relationships in order to become global citizens. Supporting and including our gender diverse community is fundamental to achieving this priority and Martin King’s address reminded us of the challenges these students face and our need to support, include and celebrate them at Trident.
Today’s free school lunch through Ka Pai Kai was hot mashed potatoes, vegetables and meatballs; a real winner with the students, many of whom come back for seconds, and of course have the fruit and yoghurt as well. The food is carefully balanced to be nutritious and filling without being laden with fats so we are proud to be able to offer our students good food as fuel for their bodies during the learning day. We also serve breakfasts to hungry students at our breakfast club, tu tangata breakfasts. With this in mind, please don’t come to school to drop off McDonalds or other fast food, or send students to school with money to get fast food. They are well fed and well looked after and it is a distraction and a litter nuisance to have fast food dropped off. Please keep this as an out of school treat and support us in maintaining great food habits at school.
Please contact school promptly if your child becomes a Household Contact or becomes ill with Covid and make sure that we are aware of the dates involved - when they fell sick / had to start self-isolating and when they can return.We are aware there are also lots of students falling ill with the common cold as we change seasons - please keep them home too!

MEET OUR YEAR 9 STUDENT SYNIVA
Syniva Bryce is one of our Year 9 students who has made a great start to her high school education and we are happy to share her thoughts about the first few weeks at Trident.
“I came from a really small school (Te Kura O Taneatua), but I also grew up on the Trident rugby fields, in the gym and the Auditorium; watching, waiting and learning from my 4 older siblings, but I was still nervous before starting at Trident. When I first started I was worried I would be late for classes but I think I am ok now I have found my way around the school. I have 2 older siblings in the Tuakana/ Teina role and I know they expect alot from me, I was in the same role at Taneatua School. I think it is good to have their support, care and leadership. I feel safer too because they will help me to be a good role model.
My favourite experiences at Trident High School so far is that it is really challenging, you can make a lot of new friends and there are lots of new experiences all the time. I have made a whole lot of new friends already, but I did already know a lot of students through my representative sport teams and that helps me too.
All my subjects are awesome but my favourite subjects are Maths, English and Social Studies because they are just so interesting, there's so many things we can learn and also when we go to those classes they make learning fun and easier to understand.
I really like all my teachers, because each teacher is helping me to achieve my goals and I really appreciate them. My whanau ako class is so cool because I know everyone in it and I have one of the best teachers to help me. I really love that Matua Mike is competitive too, it makes me want to achieve in everything.
I really want to do well in all my subjects as my siblings have set high standards, and I am so very excited to trial and play netball, rugby, touch and maybe basketball for Trident.”
