Jarrell Elementary Newsletter April 8, 2024
Greetings JES Community!
This past week, we celebrated our amazing APs and thanked them for all they do for our students, families and staff. This week, we want to highlight our dedicated Librarian, who ensures that every student feels welcome and supported in our library and helps to instill a love of reading across our campus.
Our GT students enjoyed sharing their projects with friends, family and teachers at the GT Showcase this past week. The outstanding projects have been set up in the JES library, and students will have the opportunity to view them all week long as they visit the library. We are so proud of our GT students and all of their hard work!
We will end this coming week with STAAR Pep Rally! This is a special time to celebrate all of the hard work of our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders this year! Our teachers and students have impressed us every step of the way, and I know they are ready to "show what you know!"

As always, if your child is running a fever or having diarrhea or vomiting, he/ she must stay home for 24 hours.
Important Daily Deadlines!
7:30 a.m. The back doors automatically lock, and you will need to drive around and walk your child in to the building. PLEASE DO NOT DROP-OFF STUDENTS AFTER 7:30. They must be signed in by a parent or guardian.
1:30 p.m. ALL transportation changes must be made by 1:30 by emailing or calling Stephanie Garcia at (512)-746-2170 or stephanie.garcia@jarrellisd.org.
2:30 p.m. Any student checking out early for an appointment, must be picked up prior to 2:30.
PRE-K
This week in pre-k, we will be exploring the characteristics of mammals and their habitats. In math, we will be learning that some quantities change in a predictable "one more" or "one less" pattern. In literacy we will match uppercase letters to lowercase letters and discuss personal connections to vocabulary to deepen our understanding for the term.
KINDER
1st GRADE
Reading: We will begin a new unit in reading. We will be evaluating our read-alouds to determine what is most important as we learn many new vocabulary words and vocabulary words with multiple meanings. We will also be writing brief comments about our informational texts. We will be making connections with our read-alouds to personal experiences, ideas from other texts, and to society.
Phonics: We will continue reading from our readers with a purpose and understanding and answer questions about key details in the text. Students will continue reading sentences where pronouns are substituted for nouns, using the pronouns she, he, it, I, and you. Students will continue to practice building longer sentences by using adjectives and prepositions, including words that name locations, to expand short sentences. Students will read and sort words: /n/ sound spelled with ‘n’ as in nut, /n/ sound spelled with ‘nn’ as in running, and /n/ sound spelled with ‘kn’ as in knock. Our new spelling words are: maps, mice, hammer, trimmed, skipped, scrub, space, and could. Students will be tested over these words on April 12.
Math: We will have a unit review on Tuesday. Students will be tested Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday over skills from our geometry and time unit.
Social Studies: We will begin a new unit over technology then and now. What does technology look like in our home and at school? We will understand how technology has affected communication, transportation, and recreation and how it helps us accomplish tasks. We will have an understanding of how life would be different without technology.
2nd GRADE
In Reading we will be learning about /er/ > ‘ar’ and ‘or'. We will be learning about adverbs and complete vs incomplete sentences. In Math we will be learning about rectangular arrays as a foundation for multiplication and division. In Science we will be learning about parts of plants and characteristics.
3rd GRADE
We hope that everyone enjoyed their long weekend! This week in reading we are continuing to review for the upcoming Reading STAAR Test by reading a fiction story and practicing all the skills we learned over the year in fun and different ways! In math, we will be starting to learn about 3D shapes and continuing to practice various word problems with various operations. In the afternoons we are also continuing to practice our writing skills for a prompt that goes along with the fiction story we are reading during the week. This Friday we will be having a fun pep rally to get the kiddos excited for the STAAR test that is next Thursday. We are so proud of all of the third graders for all their hard work in reading thus far and we have all the confidence in the world that these kiddos are going to do their absolute best!
4th GRADE
In math we are continuing with Unit 7 by solving multiplicative comparison word problems using measurement conversion tables. We are also learning strategies to help solve problems that involve mixed units of capacity and length. In language arts, we will be reviewing fiction strategies in preparation for our upcoming reading STAAR test. We will be focusing on inferencing, context clues, summarizing, and responding to text using text evidence.
5th GRADE
In ELA we will continue our review for the STAAR Reading test this week by focusing on skills to help read and analyze fiction texts.
This week in math, we're transitioning into our data analysis unit, where students will explore various graphical representations including dot plots, bar graphs, and stem-and-leaf plots.
Continuing our science STAAR Rockin’ Review, we're shifting our focus to explore force, motion, and energy. Through interactive discussions and engaging activities, students will deepen their understanding of these fundamental concepts, preparing them for success on the STAAR test
LIBRARY
Pre-K and Kindergarten will be reading the story "The Good Egg" by Jory Johns. We will focus on making connections between the good egg and our nursery rhyme "Humpty Dumpty". We will continue our sequencing skills using the nursery rhyme.
1st-3rd graders will be reading the story "Abdul's Story" by Jamilah Thompkins and then generating ideas to write a story in a thoughtful and creative way.
4th-5th graders will be starting a unit called "The power of words". They will read the story "Malala's Magic Pencil" and then they will define and describe various issues related to diversity, equality, and inclusion.
