Why Teach with the DBQ Project?
- The beauty of the DBQ is that it encapsulates several critical academic skills within a single but powerful learning activity, including: deep and nuanced reading, critical analysis, and evidence-based writing. Additionally, students gain a substantive understanding of content by engaging in the DBQ process.
- To support the development of these critical skills, we have developed a six step method, which breaks down what is normally a complex process into manageable, concrete steps. Additionally, our “Habits of Document Analysis” make explicit to students the habits of mind central to successfully completing a DBQ.
- All our lessons are inquiry-based and student-centered. This approach not only piques students’ curiosity, it also leads to deeper learning. As students grapple with a driving question, they read and analyze a series of documents. Ultimately, students draw their own informed conclusions about the driving question. This process encourages students to take ownership of their learning.
