Wairoa College
Newsletter 11th March 2021
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Tēnā Koutou Katoa
We are very excited to announce our Open Day and Gala on the 25th March. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet students from Years 7-13, talk to staff, explore a Year 8 class, discover what our school has to offer, grab some dinner, ride a pony and play a game or two.
We will have an enrollment desk, information on uniforms, classrooms will be open with our prefects and student leaders guiding you through each of these spaces and a prospectus for you to peruse in your own time. As you move around each of the classes make sure you get your card stamped. Once it is completed, place it in the box to go in the draw for a school uniform for 2022.
The Gala will take place in the quad under the new sun shades funded by First Light Community Foundation. Some of the stalls at the Gala include Batons Up, a Grocery Raffle, a Magic Word Game, Pony Rides, Food Stalls including Lasagne/Nachos, Sausage Sizzle, Meatball Subs, Cakes and Sweets and much more. We are hoping as many families as possible will contribute to this.
We are very proud of the work that we are doing here at Wairoa College, raising academic standards and engaging students in learning. We are in the business of raising good men and women who are going to contribute positively to Wairoa College and the community. We encourage whanau to also have the right conversations with their sons and daughters around being good men and women and solving problems in a constructive and safe manner. We explicitly teach our values of Respect, Kotahitanga, Resilience and Manaakitanga.
We have had another very busy couple of weeks with Athletics Sports, Year 9 cross-curricular units on Sailing, Aspiring Leaders trials, sport competitions and team trials starting, Leadership programmes and Swimming Sports to name a few of the events and activities taking place.
‘Regular’ attendance is defined for statistical purposes as 90% or higher. However, Ministry of Education analysis shows every day has a cumulative impact on a child’s learning and there is no ‘safe’ level of non-attendance. Every day matters.
The whanau class at each year level with the highest average attendance rates for the first 5 weeks earn House points. In assembly this week the following were acknowledged.

YEAR 7 & 8 DEPARTMENT
It’s Week 6 already and our Year 7&8 students have had a great start to the year. We have been focusing on our Term One unit – Ko Wai Au – All about me / Our stories.
N7 – By Liahona Scotson
Ko wai au - All about me
Our Stories
Hi my name is Liahona Scotson and I am eleven years old. I was born on the 22nd of October 2009 in Arizona Albuquerque hospital. I have 7 siblings, three older and four younger. Their names are Teancom, Eden, Mahonri, Ammon, Ephraim, Joseph, and Serah.
I live with my Dad and my mum in an orangey red brick house. I like drawing, reading graphic novels, and being in quiet places by myself. I don't like annoying sounds like smacking your lips, sniffing sounds, any sounds with your mouth. I like a quiet classroom with people in it especially when we have a test.
Year 7&8 School Values
2021 has started off with a hiss and a roar, in Year 7 & 8 our department has rolled through events that have highlighted our school values such as our House Day, Athletics day and our Year 7 & 8 Swimming Sports.
In between this we have also had AUT Aspiring Leadership testing. It was fantastic to see the Manaakitanga and Kotahitanga displayed amongst the houses.
The events so far have highlighted the four pillars we are upholding at the school, Manaakitanga, Whakamana, Aumangea, and Kotahitanga. In our individual classes, we are currently working through our “Ko wai au” unit celebrating who we are.

Year 7 & 8 Swimming Sports
On Friday the 26th of February the Year 7 and 8 Department held their annual swimming sports. Students participated with enthusiasm in 25m and 50m races ranging from freestyle to butterfly. Students displayed our school values of Manaakitanga and Aumangea, supporting and cheering for each other, as well as, participating in their second major sporting event in two days.
Thank you to our Year 13 prefects and helpers who kept times, started races and gave out spot prizes. Also a huge thank you to Sam and Gabrielle from Wairoa Young Achievers for giving up their time to record race results.
We had a fantastic day and we are now looking forward to taking some of our swimmers to the Wairoa District Swimming Sports on the 16th of March.

YEAR 10 SERVICES ACADEMY
As the Director for Wairoa College Services Academy, I am proud to report the first ever Year 10 Services Academy to be implemented at our school. Starting 2021, we have a good mixture of male and female students, all very keen and eager to absorb a different style of learning. The focus for Term One has been on discipline, time management, physical fitness and drill. All of which demonstrates team work and togetherness by encompassing our core values.
In such a short time, our team has proven they have the ability to learn new skills and improve every week. When conducting military drill, timing and co-ordination are an essential ingredient to success. This group of students have taken the challenge by not only learning drill, but also demonstrating potential leadership when given the opportunity to command.
Throughout the year, physical fitness (Known in the military world as PT) will be a staple diet for our Services. These activities will include circuits, boxing, running, beep test, required fitness level (RFL) and building up to a 4.5km pack march.
Overall, a pleasing effort from all. Remain focused and remember, always moving forward never backwards.

I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to represent Wairoa College as BOT Chairperson,
following the decision of Kitea Tipuna to step down from the Chairpersons position at the last BOT
meeting.
Kitea has left big shoes to be filled. He has done an incredible job of advocating for our school and
our tamariki, and leading the Board through a challenging 2020 due to Covid-19.
We wish Kitea all the very best in his new ventures and know we can continue to call on his support
and expertise as a general Board member.
For those who don’t know me I was raised with 5 brothers and sisters in the beautiful hills of Putere
where my whanau had a sheep and beef farm. I am now living in Frasertown, where my husband
John and I have a small apple orchard. I have lived and worked most of my life in education in the
Wairoa area as a teacher, Principal, Leadership Adviser and currently Learning Support Coordinator-
a role I am loving. I had the privilege of a Lead Principal role in the establishment phase of Nga Mata
Nui O Kahungunu: Kahui Ako and through my mahi over the many years have working relationships
with whanau, iwi and teams across the teaching, health and social development sectors of Wairoa.
I am looking forward to the opportunities this new role involves – I have always been passionate
about the learning and well-being of akonga / learners in Wairoa and will give my best to continue
be a strong advocate for them and for our College.
I feel very fortunate to have the support and experience of other Board members Denise Eaglesome,
Rebecca Everson, Paul Hyslop, Dave Ryan and student rep Tiana Douglas as well as Kitea, and our
Principal Jo Vennell and her leadership team, and the many strengths of all of you in our amazing
Wairoa community to call on.
Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi,
Engari he toa takitini.
It’s not the work of the individual that creates success,
But the work of the collective.
