HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK
GOLF STARS
During the 2024 Fall Golf Season, the Watertown High School Golf team was awarded the "Sportsmanship Award" for its division. This award was given for the "integrity and respect the team displayed during the Fall season." While an honor regardless of the sport, this award to a Golf team takes on an extraordinary place given the role that Sportsmanship plays in Golf. Golf is a sport where there are no referees, and players are responsible for all rules and etiquette decisions themselves. Therefore, words like honor, integrity, respect, perseverance, and especially sportsmanship are integral parts of the sport. To be recognized for those things is a powerful endorsement of our players.
Big thank you to Mr. Lynch for all his hard work as our Golf Coach and congratulations to all our Golf players!
WHS AND LOWELL ELEMENTARY
Student leaders from the inaugural Social Justice Trip (spring 2024) facilitated tier-one restorative justice circles for 5th-grade students at Lowell Elementary. These student-produced circles focused on the idea of community and activism. Students plan to lead circles at Cunniff and Hosmer Elementary Schools in the winter and spring. Circle keepers at Lowell were seniors Sylvia Sakata, Evelyn Rodriguez, Nairi Davidian, Yasmin Silva, Yassemine Idelkanoun, Nabila Abenaou, Alan Huang, and Jenna Houjazy.

A MESSAGE FROM NURSE HEALY
Cold and flu season is upon us!
What is flu?
Flu is a contagious respiratory virus that affects the nose, throat and sometimes the lungs. Symptoms can be mild to severe. Flu cases begin to increase in October and peak between December to February. It is spread mainly by droplets made when you cough, sneeze or talk.
Symptoms can include:
- Fever/chills (we consider a fever 100 degrees F or higher)
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny nose or stuffy nose
- Muscle/body aches
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Vomiting/diarrhea (less common in adults)
What can you do to prevent the flu?
- Getting your yearly flu vaccine
- Wash your hands!
- Stay away from others who are sick
What do I do if I get sick? What are your policies?
If your student is sick with an illness, the student may return when fever free for 24 hours without the use of medications to reduce a fever such as Tylenol or Advil.
What if I get COVID?
Our school committee has now adopted the CDC guidance regarding COVID, which centers around:
- Testing to identify
- Treating COVID as you would other contagious respiratory viruses
- Staying home when you have respiratory symptoms / fever
- Going back to normal activities when for at least 24 hours, both are true:
- Your symptoms are getting better overall, and
- You have not had a fever (and are not using fever-reducing medication) https://www.cdc.gov/respiratory-viruses/prevention/precautions-when-sick.html
Mask wearing is encouraged and there is no mandated isolation or quarantine. Please refer to the full guidance here: https://www.cdc.gov/covid/prevention/index.html
MANDATED STATE SCREENINGS
Over the next 2 months, we will begin our mandated state screenings at WHS.
9th graders:
- Postural
- Vision
- Hearing
- SBIRT
If you choose to have your student(s) opted out of these screenings, please notify me in writing via email.
All 10th graders must submit a physical within the past 12 months of September. If you are unsure if your student has an updated physical, please contact the nurse.

- There is a 2hr parking limit. If broken, WPD will issue parking tickets.
- It is ILLEGAL to idle. Other than being illegal, this contributes to more traffic and poor environmental conditions.
