SHOWCASING OUR R.E.A.L. TEAM MEMBERS IN ACTION
This month we are highlighting the work of our Materials Management Department.
The Comal ISD Materials Management Department is tasked with the acquisition, distribution, tracking, and final disposition of materials and services needed for educating students. The areas of responsibility covered by the department consist of Purchasing, Distribution Center, District Inventory, Instructional Materials, and Facility Rentals. Purchasing ensures the fulfillment of all legal guidelines for the procurement of goods and services, ranging from placing orders for routine supplies to bidding construction projects and all points in between. The CISD Distribution Center maintains the warehouse stock inventory in addition to receiving District orders. The Distribution Center prepares and delivers all products coming from the warehouse to District campuses and facilities in a timely fashion and with the highest level of customer service. All District goods valued at over $250 per item are tracked and managed within the District Inventory. The department conducts annual inventories as well as facilitates the disposal of surplus goods through redistribution or online auction. Instructional Materials (formerly referred to as Textbooks) are similarly tracked and inventoried. This area of responsibility also includes coordination with the Curriculum and Academics Department for the selection, ordering, and distribution of instructional materials for our students. Facility Rentals is the division of the department that works directly with the community to coordinate rentals of CISD's available facilities . A number of community groups inclusive of, but not limited to, churches, recreational leagues, clubs, and youth organizations are able to book the facilities to support their initiatives.
This team continually provides support to all facets of the District by utilizing an efficient centralized materials management program.
Thank you to our hard working and dedicated Materials Management Department for their tremendous contribution to providing the necessary tools for student success!

Tax forms 1095-B and 1095-C-What You Need to Know
As an Employee, you have come to expect a W-2 form for tax reporting purposes. However, with the Affordable Care Act, you now receive additional tax forms. The forms, 1095-B and a 1095-C, provide evidence of minimum essential coverage. Both of these forms contain the same information; 1095-B comes from the insurance company, while 1095-C comes from the District. You will receive by mail, or be able to access in the employee portal, a 1095-C from Comal ISD by March 2.
When you receive the forms, they should not be filed with you tax return. You should keep them for you tax records as they would be required should you be audited. Also, you can file your taxes prior to receiving the forms, as they are for your records only. When you file your taxes, you will simply indicate that you and your family members all had minimum essential coverage for each month of the tax year by checking the appropriate box on Form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ.
If an you have any questions about these forms, or do not receive them by March 2, please contact Janice Sanders at Janice.Sanders@comalisd.org.

Comal ISD will observe Spring Break March 13-17, 2017
- The sun's rays are the strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Try to keep out of the sun during those hours.
- The sun's damaging UV rays can bounce back from sand, snow or concrete; so be particularly careful of these areas.
- Wear commercially available sun-protective clothing, like swim shirts.
- Most of the sun's rays can come through the clouds on an overcast day; so use sun protection even on cloudy days.
- When choosing a sunscreen, look for the words "broad-spectrum" on the label - it means that the sunscreen will protect against both ultraviolet B (UVB) and ultraviolet A (UVA) rays. Choose a water-resistant sunscreen and reapply every two hours or after swimming, sweating or towel drying.
- Zinc oxide, a very effective sunscreen, can be used as extra protection on the nose, cheeks, top of the ears and on the shoulders.
- Use a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. The additional benefits of using sunscreen with SPF 50+ are limited.
- Rub sunscreen in well, making sure to cover all exposed areas, especially the face, nose, ears, feet and hands, and even the backs of the knees.
- Put on sunscreen 30 minutes before going outdoors - it needs time to work on the skin.
- Sunscreens should be used for sun protection and not as a reason to stay in the sun longer.
Spring Break Pool, River and Beach Tips :
- Children and adults should never swim alone.
- Provide touch supervision. This means that an adult is within arm's reach anytime your young child is in or near water.
- Be aware that pools and beaches in other countries may not have lifeguards, and pools may have unsafe drain systems. Supervise children closely.
- At the beach, stay within the designated swimming area and ideally within the visibility of a lifeguard.
- Be aware of rip currents. If you should get caught in one, don't try to swim against it. Swim parallel to shore until clear of the current.
- Seek shelter in case of storm. Get out of the water. Get off the beach in case of lightning.
- Watch out for traffic – some beaches allow cars.

Effective Communication in the Workplace
If we learn to effectively communicate in our work we better serve all those impacted by our organization. Here are a few strategies to reflect on regarding your own communication skills and how well you use them at work.
1. Give Your Undivided Attention. Whether you're in a group meeting or with one colleague, offering your complete focus to those you're with will greatly improve how you're received. How often have you been in a conversation with someone who kept looking at their smartphone or elsewhere while talking or listening to you? Lack of focus devalues the conversation causing people to tune out. Maintain eye contact during conversations and meetings, and put all other things aside to visually convey your focus and encourage each individual to stay present.
2. Take Time to Listen. Don't monopolize the conversation. After a while, people will start tuning you out and your message will be lost. Be frugal with your words, avoiding fluff and fillers. Pause after important points to take questions or check for understanding. This will help your staff members feel that they play an active role in the conversation.
3. Be Mindful of How You're Communicating. Your words are only a fraction of the message you relay to people at work. Your body language and tone influence how you are perceived and contribute toward the effectiveness with which your communication is received. Maintain a relaxed stance and facial expression while speaking with co-workers. Rest your arms by your sides rather than crossing them over your chest as this is a defensive posture. Make eye contact, smile when it's appropriate and nod your head affirmatively while listening.
Remember that social media is never an appropriate venue for voicing concerns about the workplace or your co-workers. All concerns should be addressed in person with individuals in a professional manner.
4. Follow Up in Writing. No matter how compelling your meeting was, it's probable that those in attendance will not remember everything that was shared. Prior to the meeting, designate a person to take notes. Assimilate this information into a bullet-pointed email to send to your team as a follow-up and refresher. Short, concise notes will keep important information fresh in people's minds.
5. Inform and Inspire. Communication is a form of information exchange. Explaining and clarifying your thoughts and ideas is important. Communication efforts can also inspire your team as much as they educate them. Plan ahead for meetings and conversations so you can effectively mix information and inspiration. The more everyone on the team feels that their words and work are valued the more the team can collaborate successfully.
