PreK-5 Teaching & Learning Updates
August 2022/Springfield Local Schools
Welcome Back!
SLS Educators,
I hope you had the opportunity to relax and recharge this summer and are ready for an exciting new year! The 2022-2023 school year is sure to be filled with excitement as we welcome students and staff to new building reconfigurations. We will be learning and growing together, and it will be important to support not only our students but one another in the process.
Our main focus this year will be implementing our updated MTSS tiered systems of support, implementing Phonics First in grades K-1, and continuing to roll out our ELA curricula in grades 4-5. All of these efforts will support us in improving student academic achievement. Thank you to the staff members who dove into this work over the summer! During the opening days, we have the opportunity to look at these and prepare for their implementation.
However, with all of these changes, it is important not to lose sight of what makes this district such a wonderful place to work and learn in. It is important to keep the SLS traditions alive and preserve the warm and welcoming culture that has already been established.
I appreciate your willingness to collaborate with me in making this the best year it can be for all of us!

High-Quality Student Data or HQSD
According to ODE, "The teacher evaluation will use at least two measures of district-determined high-quality student data (HQSD) to provide evidence of student learning attributable to the teacher being evaluated. When applicable to the grade level or subject area taught by a teacher, HQSD shall include the value-added progress dimension and the teacher shall use at least one other measure of HQSD to demonstrate student learning. HQSD may be used as evidence in any component of the evaluation where applicable."
A team of teachers and administrators agreed to serve on the HQSD District Committee. The team includes Anjanette Newcombe, Theo Middleton, and Taryn Miley. The HQSD team will approve elementary assessments based on specific criteria. Most of the elementary teachers will not need to submit any assessments since we have a district-approved list already. Every PreK-5 teacher will need to notify their primary evaluator of the 2 sources of HQSD that they will be using for the 22/23 school year.
Important Items:
- OTES HQSD Selection 22/23 -Please check your email for a link to the form; please submit this form no later than October 1, 2022 to declare your chosen HQSD measures.
- HQSD District Approved List, SLS
- You will be invited to a Google Classroom entitled, "SLS District HQSD." You only need to enter the classroom if you are submitting an assessment(s) for approval to the HQSD District Committee. Otherwise, you may ignore the invite.
- If you choose to submit an assessment for approval: Submit by the last day of the previous month. For example- submit by 2/28 to be reviewed in March.

Release of Spring 2022 Test Items
Released items from the spring 2022 Ohio’s State Tests are now available in the Ohio’s State Tests portal. The items give educators insight into the kinds of questions students experienced and are a useful tool to inform classroom instruction and assessment. Both teachers and parents can use the items to help students know what to expect.
Included with items in this release are the associated learning standard(s) and the scoring guides. The scoring guides contain answer keys, scoring rubrics, sample student responses and notes on scoring and rationales that describe why response options are correct or incorrect. The scoring guides also contain information about Depth of Knowledge (DOK) for Mathematics, ELA and Social Studies and Cognitive Demand (CD) for Science.
Grades K-1: Proficiency Scales (ELA & Math)
We will review this process for grades 2-3 over the upcoming school year.
