News Around the Classrooms 📣
Pre-School: This week in preschool we began our study of community helpers, with a specific focus on police officers. The preschoolers practiced number and shape recognition through projects, including badges, police hats, and police cars. We discussed the importance of safety rules, such as wearing a seatbelt. The preschoolers also learned about the letter O and the sounds it makes.
Kindergarten: This week in kindergarten our letter was Oo. We practiced its sound in the initial and medial position. We also practiced proper formation and how it sits in the lines. Our HFW was “you.” Our print concepts were parts of a book and matching speech to text. We continued with segmenting and blending and focused on onset/rime segmenting. Our comprehension skill focus was to ask/answer questions and topic and details. In writing, we discussed and focused on return sweep, supporting details and describing words. In math our lesson was comparing numbers to 10.
Grade 1: This week we reviewed phonics patterns ch, -tch, and -es, along with glued sounds. For comprehension we reviewed characters, setting, and plot. In writing we are continuing to work on the How-To unit. In math we learned about tens and ones. For science this week we discussed communication and ways to communicate besides using cell phones.
Grade 2: This week, second graders learned the value of different types of coins and bills. They answered word problems involving money. In phonics, students explored the various ways to spell the long vowel i sound. In reading, they read several stories about helping out the community including Lighting our Lives and Biblioburro. They also learned how to write a response to reading using our RACES graphic organizer. In writing, they continued with their personal narratives. In social studies, second grade learned about Martin Luther King Jr.
Art: Kindergartners completed their adorable multimedia snowman project. Grade 1 is learning how to mix primary colors to make secondary colors while painting adorable popsicles. Grade 2 learned how to mix tertiary colors while creating a blue purple antarctic background with watercolors. Grade 3 was introduced to artist Georgia OKeefe and started their own oversized flowers.
Physical Education: This week students continued to practice their step aerobic and stretch band routines. They also learned the dance Cha Cha Slide and played GaGa ball at the end of class if time allowed.
Music: This week, students K-3 have started the 2nd week of their unit on listening. Grade 1 and Kindergarten will listen to music for dynamics, tempo and directions as well as music from Haydn. 2nd grade will listen to music of Beethoven and respond to vocal and instrumental musical elements.
Library: This week, kindergarten, first and second grade students learned about Martin Luther King Jr. Kindergarten students listened to the article about Martin Luther King Jr. on Pebble Go and then did a drawing or used the microphone tool to explain what they learned about him. First and second grade students watched the Martin Luther King Jr. Brain Pop video and then chose a word from a list of five to show their understanding of it by drawing, writing a sentence about it and working on a short skit. Third grade students continued working on the folktale/fairytale project. Students finished reading their stories and completed their graphic organizers. Some groups began to pick the image for their setting using an AI tool on Canva.
